| Overview |
IBM Automated Tape Allocation Manager is renamed to IBM Tivoli® Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS® . V2.1 of IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS replaces V1.1 of IBM Automated Tape Allocation Manager.
IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 provides automatic, unattended sharing of tape storage devices between multiple images with no requirement for a shared Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) or sysplex. Instead of dedicating tape devices to a specific image, IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 helps users to ensure that existing tape drives are available on demand for requests from multiple images.
Since your existing tape storage devices can be shared between multiple images, IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 can help to deliver a better return on tape hardware investments by helping to:
- Reduce delays in batch processing
- Improve use of existing devices
- Reduce operational overhead
New in V2.1:
- Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based communication that can facilitate centralized command and control
- Support for older, nonswitchable tape devices (such as 3420s)
- Coexistence support that enables IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 to run in parallel with third-party products, which helps simplify migration to IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 while exploiting capabilities that are unique to it
- VOLSER-to-unit preferencing for assignment of VOLSERs to a specific set of tape drive units
- New operator commands and new subcommands

| Description |
Contention for tape resources in mission-critical dataplexes can create problems for businesses:
- Long wait times for application or process execution, and delay of related business processes
- Significant operator attention to balancing tape storage needs against available resources
- Pressure to purchase costly excess tape unit capacity, often without a full understanding of how it will be used
- Longer return-on-investment on hardware investments
IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 is a z/OS storage solution that helps you address these problems through management of tape storage device availability, which helps deliver optimal usage across multiple images within the tapeplex. As a result, tape drives can be used instead of sitting idle. By automatically responding to allocation requests, the need for operator intervention can be reduced.
New features of V2.1
TCP/IP-based communication: Expanding on a "doing more with less" philosophy, IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 introduces a TCP/IP-based communication infrastructure that can enable personnel to issue global commands from any image within the tapeplex to one or all copies of IBM Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1. Messages can be passed between started tasks of IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 via TCP/IP. No shared control file, sysplex, or shared Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) is required.
Support for nonswitchable devices: Despite significant improvements in tape technology, many organizations are faced with the requirement to maintain and support older hardware, such as reel-to-reel 3420s. V2.1 of IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS supports these nonswitchable tape devices and can enable you to share them between multiple images within the tapeplex.
Coexistence support for migration process: If you want to migrate from certain third-party products to IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1, you can run the products in parallel. This allows ample time for testing before completing the migration and gives you the opportunity to exploit features unique to IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 while continuing to use your existing product to manage a subset of your tape devices. This capability can simplify the migration process and can help you migrate to IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 by converting several tape devices at a time, instead of converting all or nothing.
New operator commands: Operators can issue new commands that help provide additional insight into tape device usage and activity, such as:
- Display pending mount requests on the local system, on any remote system, or on all systems within the tapeplex
- Display tape devices allocated or available for use on any or all systems within the tapeplex
- Specify the target system for product commands as local, single remote, or all systems within the tapeplex
- Check if multiple exit routines are found on the MVS recovery allocation exit
New subcommands can enable an operator to issue commands to remote systems and see the response.
VTS load balancing: For a VTS library comprised of two or more virtual tape servers, IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 includes a VTS load-balancing feature. When implemented, this feature can balance VTS use by helping to ensure that allocations utilize all tape devices in the library.
VOLSER-to-unit preferencing: Operators or administrators can restrict one or more series of VOLSERs (for example, all VOLSERs related to payroll) to a specific set of tape devices.
ALL parameter: The "ALL" parameter works with the Select and Exclude commands to select or exclude all of the tape devices at one time.
New configuration field for Least Recently Used (LRU) device selection: LRU device selection can be used instead of random device selection. With LRU processing, the tape device that has been dormant the longest will be the first tape device that IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 will attempt to use.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation act
IBM Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/OS, V2.1 is capable as of August 24, 2004, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.
Value Unit-based pricing
Value Unit-based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve, which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.
There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed. For example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to, an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement.
Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.
