CICS VSAM Recovery (CICS VR) V3 is an automated recovery tool that helps you recover from loss of VSAM data due to catastrophic hardware failure, software failure, or human error.
CICS VR uses logs to recover your VSAM data. It supports:
- MVS system logger log streams
- CICS VR SAM copies of MVS system logger log streams
CICS VR V3 offers extensive improvements over the previous version, resulting in a world class recovery tool. As well as providing new function, such as change accumulation, recovery automation, and improved remote site recovery for existing CICS users, CICS VR V3 can be used with batch applications. CICS VR VSAM batch logging can record updates to VSAM spheres made by batch applications. If the VSAM spheres are lost or damaged, CICS VR can use the log records to recreate the spheres. If a batch job fails, CICS VR can remove the updates that were made to the VSAM spheres by the failed job step.
With the increasing reliability of enterprise hardware and with stable enterprise software systems, catastrophic loss of data is a rare event. Nevertheless, for most enterprises the residual risk of loss is unacceptable. With careful planning, good operational procedures, and the services of CICS VR, you can eliminate almost all risk.
CICS VR can also perform a selective recovery of VSAM data sets. You can specify which log records you want applied during recovery processing by specifying the appropriate identifiers (file, terminal, and transaction). For example, you can create a recovery job that will not apply any log records produced from a particular transaction. The resulting data set would, therefore, have all updates made by the specified transaction removed.
User-friendly dialog interface: CICS VR is designed to help you recover lost or damaged VSAM data sets, using a CICS VR Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) dialog. You navigate through the dialog panels, selecting spheres you want to recover and backups you want to use. Behind the scenes, CICS VR executes utilities such as LOGOFLOGS SCAN to get the latest information on the VSAM spheres from CICS. Then the dialogs generate a recovery job that you can submit when you are ready. The CICS VR dialogs supply all the details (for example, VSAM spheres, and backups) and you select those you want. By simply accepting the default parameters that CICS VR displays on the panels, you create a job that restores each sphere from its latest registered backup and then performs a forward recovery up to the current date and time.
Usability enhancements in CICS VR V3 allow you to customize the system so that you can filter the information you see, making it easier to manage the recovery process. You can define in detail which data you want recovered, for example, records for a particular terminal ID, transaction ID, or file ID.
If you do not want to use the latest backup, you can get a list of all known backups for the sphere and select the backup that you want. You can use a group function to group data sets according to your own criteria. For example, you can group VSAM spheres according to volume, CICS APPLID, and so on, so you can manage the backup and recovery of VSAM spheres as a unit.
Backup management support: CICS VR currently can be notified of relevant DFSMShsm and DFSMSdss logical backup information for VSAM data sets. These backups can then be selected for restore through the CICS VR panel interface. In addition, CICS VR can automatically deregister the backups when associated log information has been deleted. Now CICS VR V3.3 has a new general file copy notification service. This service allows you to notify CICS VR about information for logical backups created for VSAM data sets by almost any backup product (IBM or non-IBM).
A post general availability CICS VR enhancement will exploit the new general file copy notification service to allow for the information about all backups that CICS VR receives through the notification service to be automatically registered to CICS VR. This enhancement will also allow the registered backups to be displayed through the CICS VR panel interface. When selected, CICS VR will use the proper user-specified restore JCL skeleton to restore the backup and then perform a proper forward recovery.
Support for batch updates: CICS VR V3 can provide support for batch data sets as well as online data sets. This support requires that all systems are running as a sysplex, with the LOGR policy defined. When enabled, it provides logging for VSAM data sets that are not currently in use by other applications. Variations of CICS VR batch logging allow you to forward recover batch updates, remove batch updates, or both.
CICS VR VSAM batch logging calls the system logger to write the log records to the MVS system logger's log stream. The system logger has a common logging facility for all z/OS and OS/390® images providing greater 24x7 availability in the event that an image fails. The coupling facility enables logging from throughout the sysplex to be directed to a common log stream, if desired. In addition, CICS VR VSAM batch logging is invoked automatically and does not require any changes to be made to your batch jobs.
CICS VR forward recovery logging writes a log record after every update made by a batch job. Therefore, if a VSAM sphere becomes corrupted, CICS VR can use the log records to return a VSAM sphere back to its existing state before the corruption occurred.
CICS VR undo logging (new in CICS VR V3.3) writes a log record before every update made by a batch job. Therefore, if a step in a batch job fails, CICS VR can use the log records to remove the updates made by the failed batch job step.
CICS VR can perform forward recovery logging, undo logging, or both for your VSAM spheres.
Reducing recovery time: CICS VR V3 includes a change accumulation feature which significantly reduces the time it takes to forward recover a VSAM sphere. After a backup has been made for a sphere, you can set up a change accumulation batch job so that it is submitted at regular intervals by a workload management product such as Tivoli® Workload Scheduler (5698-WKB). The change accumulation batch job consolidates the forward recovery log records into a change accumulation data set. Then, when a forward recovery is needed, the change accumulation data set can be used in place of the forward recovery log stream. CICS VR needs to use the forward recovery log stream only to get the most recent log records (the records that have not yet been consolidated by the change accumulation batch job).
Remote site recovery: CICS VR V3 provides a set of utilities to aid with disaster recovery. These utilities (log stream copy, disaster recovery change accumulation, RCDS EXPORT/IMPORT, shadow processing) are designed to add VSAM recovery into your current disaster recovery process without requiring you to restructure your overall plan.
Depending on your disaster recovery requirements, you can choose to use an appropriate set of the available CICS VR disaster recovery utilities.
What's new in V3.3
V3.3 greatly extends the value of CICS VR with additional recovery and backup capabilities, along with numerous usability enhancements.
- A new batch backout feature allows all updates made by a failed batch job step to be removed (backed out) from the affected VSAM data sets. Optionally, CICS VR can perform the backout of VSAM sphere updates automatically when a batch job step fails. This feature allows you to quickly recover from batch processing errors, therefore decreasing the chances that batch processing will exceed its allowed time frame (batch window).
CICS VR V3.1 made it possible for CICS VR to be notified of relevant DFSMShsm and DFSMSdss logical
backups created for VSAM data sets. These backups can be selected for restoration through the CICS
VR panel interface. In addition, CICS VR can automatically deregister the backups when associated
log information has been deleted.
In CICS VR V3.3, you get a more general file copy notification service. This allows you to notify CICS VR about logical backups created for VSAM data sets by almost any backup product (IBM or non-IBM). The CICS VR general file copy notification service can be invoked by:
- A VSAM backup product that has been designed to use the new CICS VR notification interface.
- A job step added by a user to an existing batch job that drives almost any VSAM backup utility.
At general availability, CICS VR V3.3 will include base function that enables the user to call the notification service. Subsequently, IBM will provide CICS VR enhancements through the Service channel that will make full use of the notification data. These enhancements will provide:
- Automatic registration in the CICS VR recovery control data set (RCDS) of the backup information CICS VR receives through the notification interface
- Display of all registered backups through the CICS VR panel interface for user selection during recovery
- Automatic restoration of any selected backup by using an appropriate user-specified restore JCL skeleton as part of the recovery process
The enhanced interface makes it possible to receive notification of (and view in the panel interface) backups produced by IBM's CICS VSAM Copy utility (program number 5655-L66).
Usability enhancements have been made to the following functions:
- A new instance identifier filter provides the grouping of VSAM spheres according to the CICS APPLID, TVSNAME, or CICS VR server address space identifier associated with the instances that updated the spheres.
- CICS VR grouping is enhanced to allow groupings of VSAM spheres listed in members of partitioned data sets to be processed by the CICS VR panel interface.
- The time stamp of all backups registered to CICS VR will be displayable in both GMT and local time formats throughout the CICS VR panel interface.
- Enhanced backup deregistration options are added to the CICS VR panel interface.
CICS VR server address space
- Features to keep the CICS VR server address space available 24x7 have been added, including the ability to maintain the RCDSs without terminating the CICS VR server address space.
- In a sysplex environment, multiple instances of CICS VR now can be grouped into cross system coupling facility (XCF) groups, allowing proper communication and organization among the instances in the groups. CICS VR XCF groups might be used to keep production data and activity completely separate from testing data and activity.
- Existing disaster recovery utilities are enhanced to allow further control over the items that are sent to the remote recovery site.
CICS VR V3.3 continues to build upon the rich function of V3. New function increases the overall
VSAM management capabilities while usability enhancements continue to make CICS VR a simple and
straightforward product to use.

Value Unit based pricing
Value Unit based pricing will help align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve, which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.
There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will be based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed; for example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement.
Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions
IBM zSeries software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible tools apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture (64 bit) mode on a zSeries 900, no other MVS-based operating system is licensed to that server and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.
Sub-capacity charges for an eligible tool is based on the z/OS product defined capacity. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible tools, the customer is required to:
- Determine the MSUs needed for each machine on which the tools will run. Only machines on which the customer has implemented sub-capacity Workstation License Charges (WLC) according to the above terms and conditions, are eligible for charges at less than full machine capacity for the tools.
- Use the product defined capacity for z/OS (as specified on the Sub-Capacity Reports submitted to IBM for sub-capacity WLC) as the sub-capacity (MSUs) for each tool.
- Submit any additional MSUs and/or Value Units required for each product along with the current entitlement in Value Units for each product.
Sub-capacity charges for tools
To be eligible for sub-capacity charges for tools, the machine on which the tools are running must be eligible for WLC sub-capacity charges terms and conditions. The customer must have signed the Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges-Pre-ILM, Z125-6516, and submitted at least one Sub-Capacity Report to IBM as defined in the attachment.
With sub-capacity charges, the charge for an eligible tool is based on the z/OS product defined capacity. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for each eligible tool for each machine, the customer should:
- Determine the MSUs needed for the machine on which the tools will run. In a data sharing environment, determine the aggregate MSUs needed on the machine where the tools run. Use the product defined capacity (MSUs) for z/OS (as specified on the Sub-Capacity Reports submitted to IBM for sub-capacity WLC) as the sub-capacity (MSUs) for each tool.
- Submit any additional MSUs and/or Value Units required for each product along with the current entitlement in Value Units for each product.
- If the use of sub-capacity pricing terms for tools results in a reduced requirement for Value Units, thus freeing up entitlements, customers can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing the Value Units across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up Value Units. Subscription and Support volumes and entitlements for existing contracts will continue to be at the same levels as the acquired licenses.
Management of the Value Unit entitlements continues to be a customer responsibility. If one of the following occur on a machine to which tools are licensed, the customer must determine if additional Value Units and Subscription and Support need to be ordered for those tools to cover the increase:
- The z/OS defined capacity is increased.
- The requirements for WLC sub-capacity charges are no longer met.
Sub-capacity utilization determination
