| Description |
CICS Transaction Gateway
CICS TG, a key e-business enabling function, provides a powerful, scalable, easy-to-use, secure complement to a Web application server enabling multiple users at Web browsers to access business-critical applications running on IBM CICS servers (including CICS Transaction Servers and TXSeries servers). It leverages the latest Java and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technologies to provide secure integration of the open world of Web browsers to the power, flexibility, and robustness of enterprise applications running on CICS.
What's new in CICS TG, V5.1
One of the primary advantages of the CICS TG over other connectors is that it provides a choice of deployment platforms. It is designed to run on the same system as the Web application server, or on a separate gateway server, and is capable of supporting a large number of concurrent users.
In addition to previous support for Windows, AIX®, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux on IBM zSeries®, and z/OS® platforms,
the CICS TG V5.1 adds support for:
- Linux on Intel using Red Hat Enterprise Linux V2.1
- Linux on Intel using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server V8
- Microsoft Windows 2003 family of servers
- Sun Solaris 9
CICS TG V5 provides programming interfaces in Java, C/C++, Component Object Model (COM) (for Visual Basic (VB) or VB Script support), and COBOL, through both low-level and high-level component-oriented interfaces. IBM is committed to Java and CICS TG, an industry-leading product in the Java environment. It implements the open standards based on J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA) to enable interoperation with WebSphere Application Servers. Enhancements in CICS TG V5.1 add:
- Updated IBM Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.3.1 for AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows
- Java 1.4.1 support
CICS TG provides a comprehensive range of networking options to connect to your CICS systems, TCP/IP, TCP62, SNA LU6.2, and memory-based protocols.
The CICS TG manuals have been refreshed to include the enhancements in CICS TG V5.0.1 and CICS TG V5.1. In addition, to assist in the rapid development of CICS TG-based e-business solutions, the following four new configuration guides have been published since the announcement of the CICS TG V5.0:
- Deploying the ECIDateTime J2EE sample into WebSphere Application Server V5.0 for z/OS
- Deploying the ECIDateTime and EPIPlay J2EE samples into WebSphere Application Server V5.0
- Configuring the CICS Transaction Gateway V5 for Terminal Servlets, using WebSphere V4.0.1 for AIX
- Creating configuration files for the CICS Transaction Gateway for z/OS on a PC
The CICS TG V5.1 provides a migration path for customers using any previous version of the CICS TG. It should be considered by anybody looking to integrate new or existing CICS applications into new e-business scenarios.
CICS TG V5.0.1
The CICS TG V5.0.1 was added to the CICS Web site and made available on August 1, 2003. All function delivered in V5.0.1 is migrated to V5.1. This includes:
- Support for WebSphere Application Server V5 for z/OS and z/OS.e
- Remote Gateway support on WebSphere Application Server for z/OS
- AIX V5.2 and IBM z/OS V1.4 support
- Full accessibility, includes discontinuation of EPIBeans, VB/VB Script samples, and some Terminal Servlet function
- Control of SSL cipher suite (enforcement of 128-bit SSL)
- Memory mapped tracing for the Client daemon
- EPI/terminal recovery for CICS server outages

| Product positioning |
Many enterprises use multitiered configurations to implement e-business applications that serve their customers as end users.
These configurations typically consist of three physical tiers made up of the end-user browser, a Web server/Web application server, and a back-end Enterprise Information Server (EIS), although additional tiers are also sometimes used. The purpose of CICS TG is to provide efficient integration of middle tier application servers with CICS-based EISs. It achieves this by providing a multi-user gateway that supports programming interfaces on the same tier as the Web application server, for use by Web applications in Java and other languages. This enables use of existing assets and skills to build middle tier solutions in combination with enterprise CICS systems, to achieve effective e-business solutions. CICS TG also provides an excellent environment for those wishing to gain familiarity with Java programming, prior to using this in the host CICS environment.
CICS TG V5 enables you to implement robust and efficient end-to-end configurations and, by supporting major server platforms, provides considerable flexibility in the configurations that may be adopted. It also enables you to change configurations without modifying applications when operational reasons require this or make it desirable, for example to increase the scalability of a solution. The option to deploy CICS TG V5 on OS/390® or z/OS, supporting Web applications locally on OS/390 or z/OS, or remotely on a physical middle tier server, provides a configuration that enables high scalability and has been tested at transaction rates in excess of 1,000 transactions per second.
CICS TG V5 contains a superset of the functions offered in CICS UC V5 and may be used to support multi-user integration applications written in C, C++, VB, and as COM objects.

Compatibility: CICS TG V5.1 will continue to support the following components.
SSL: SystemSSL and SSLight protocols will continue to be supported. However, the recommended encryption solution is to use JSSE as support for SSLight and SystemSSL will be removed in a future release of CICS TG.
Applets: Java applet support is included for compatibility. However, it is recommended that users migrate to a Java servlet solution because the Java applet support may be removed in a future release of CICS TG, including support for the HTTP and HTTPS protocols, as well as Java 1.1-enabled browsers.
Component Object Model (COM) libraries: Support for out-of-process COM libraries will continue, but it is recommended that users migrate to use in-process libraries because this provides better performance. Support for out-of-process libraries may be removed in a future releases of CICS TG and CICS UC.
Network Provider Interface (NPI): Support will continue for the NPI on Windows. However, support may be removed in a future releases of CICS TG and CICS UC.
EPIRequest: Support for the EPIRequest class is included for compatibility, but it is recommended that users migrate to either the Java Connector Architecture (JCA) or the EPI support classes (Terminal, Screen, and Field) because support may be removed in a future release of CICS TG.
Common Connection Framework (CCF): In keeping with IBM's commitment to open standards, the CCF has been replaced with Java Connector Architecture (JCA). CCF functions will be delivered in this release of the CICS TG for migration purposes. IBM recommends that customers put migration plans in place to remove application dependencies, and build all new applications on the new, replacement interfaces. IBM will continue to support these replaced interfaces until end of service of this CICS TG release; thereafter, support will be withdrawn.
CCF broke new ground upon release and has significantly influenced the evolution of the now industry-standard JCA. IBM is committed to open standards. Our strategy is to help customers move toward industry standards as they provide the necessary function. IBM recommends that customers put plans in place to complete migration of their CCF applications to JCA within the next three years. For further details on the support of CCF within WebSphere Application Server V5, refer to Software announcement 203-319 , dated November 25, 2003.

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put
you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution
that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on
the IBM . You should benefit
from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and pre-emptive monitoring. IBM
Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic
Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM system. It is designed to
proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic
customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware
error logs and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service
agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware
problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service
that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected
through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they
are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
