Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) V1.8 is designed to:

  • Eliminate need to upgrade BTLS when upgrading to currently planned releases of z/OS DFSMS
  • Help minimize code defects by incorporating all existing maintenance
  • Enhance data retrieval and improve operational productivity with mount and demount commands for the IBM 3494/3495
  • Make it easy to identify libraries with catalog records
  • Enhance data availability in the event of a permanent I/O error with dynamic device reconfiguration (DDR) swaps

Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) V1.8 is designed to:

  • Support z/OS® V1.5 and currently planned z/OS releases, so you will not have to upgrade your BTLS release every time you upgrade to currently planned z/OS DFSMS releases
  • Include a roll-up of outstanding maintenance from BTLS V1.7
  • Provide automation support for the IBM 3494/3495 Tape Library Dataserver in a non-system-managed tape environment
  • Enable tape automation while preparing for SMS Systems Managed Tape

Basic Tape Library Support V1.8 provides the following functions:

  • Support for currently planned z/OS DFSMS releases, eliminating the need to upgrade BTLS every time you upgrade to currently planned z/OS releases.
  • A maintenance roll-up including all BTLS V1.7.0 maintenance.
  • The message display sends mount and demount commands to the IBM 3494/3495. These commands instruct the IBM 3495/3495 to mount a library volume on a drive, or demount a volume and return it to the library storage rack.
  • Each volume in a library is defined by a catalog record that names the library in which the volume resides.
  • Dynamic device reconfiguration (DDR), used to swap a volume to another device following a permanent I/O error, now swaps the volume to a library device, if the original device is a library device.
  • The access method services LIBRARY command performs operations to help manage tape volumes in a Tape Library Dataserver and migration to system-managed tape environments.

Hardware requirements

All hardware supported by z/OS® V1.5.

Software requirements

The following programs or equivalent are prerequisites. Subsequent versions, releases, and modification levels may be used unless otherwise announced.

  • High LevelfAssembler (HLA) for MVS™, VM, and VSE (5696-234) with current maintenance
  • System Modification Program Extended (SMP/E) V1.8.1 (5668-949) for installation and maintenance
  • z/OS V1.5 (5694-A01)

Compatibility: BTLS V1.8 is required to support z/OS DFSMS V1.5 and provides function identical to BTLS V1.7.

Security, auditability, and control

IBM Basic Tape Library Support V1.8 uses the security and auditability features of z/OS. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering information

Ordering z/OS through the Internet

ShopzSeries provides an easy way to plan and order your z/OS ServerPac or CBPDO. It will analyze your current installation, determine product migration, and present your new configuration based on z/OS. Additional products can also be added to your order (including determination of whether all product requisites are satisfied). ShopzSeries is available in the U.S. and several countries in Europe. In countries where ShopzSeries is not available yet, contact your IBM representative (or Business Partner) to handle your order via the traditional IBM ordering process. Current licensees

Current licensees of IBM Basic Tape Library Support must order this release via MES. Ordering instructions are scheduled to be mailed from IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment to all current licensees by March 12, 2004.

New licensees

Shipment will begin on the planned availability date.

  • Orders that ship before the planned availability will receive BTLS V1.7.
  • Orders that ship after the planned availability date will receive BTLS V1.8.

New users of Basic Tape Library Support should specify:

Basic license: To order a basic license, specify the program number and feature number 9001 for asset registration. Specify feature number 1314 for a monthly license charge (MLC). When BTLS V1.8 is available, BTLS V1.7 will no longer be available.

Single version charging: To elect single version charging, the customer must notify and identify to IBM the prior program and replacement program, and the designated machine the programs are operating on.

Customization options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order to specify the delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example: If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.

Expedite shipments will be processed to receive 72-hour delivery from the time IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) receives the order. SDF will then ship the order via overnight air transportation.

Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.

Customized offerings

Most product media is shipped only via Customized Offerings (for example, CBPDO, ServerPac, Systempac®). Non-customized items (CDs, diskettes, source media, media kits) will continue to be shipped via the stand-alone product.

If the server is under a current IBM Maintenance Service Agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
