IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server, together with complementary integration accelerators and business activity monitoring tools, provide a business integration platform that can be used to:

  • Create and deploy new business processes
  • Synchronize business events in multiple systems
  • Integrate applications on diverse platforms
  • Transform information formats enroute between applications
  • Link people into a new business approach

A business integration platform can help you solve a wide range of integration problems, such as:

  • Deploy integration to support an immediate departmental project and counter a competitive business threat.
  • Link a call center rollout around the world to a range of local and central support systems to improve customer satisfaction.
  • Adopt a new application package and speedily connect to other systems with minimum effort.
  • Introduce supply chain management — Connect all parts of the value chain.
  • Create a blueprint for an enterprise-wide integration platform to support your long term strategic initiatives.
IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server V4.2.2 is comprised of the following components:

Note: Per-establishment authorizations are provided for WebSphere Business Integration Adapter Framework and WebSphere Business Integration Data Handler for XML. Multiple instances may be used to implement a WebSphere Business Integration Solution.

Per-application instance authorizations are included for each adapter. The adapter authorizations are associated with the Reference Server for which Processor License Units (PLUs) are acquired, not with each PLU acquired. The authorizations for the WebSphere MQ Workflow and WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker adapters are included to connect those servers with the InterChange Server. The additional adapter authorizations may each be used once only to provide a connection between one instance of a user's application and the InterChange Server as part of the WebSphere Business Integration Server solution. For additional adapter requirements, a separate establishment authorization for each is recommended.

Limited use licenses for IBM DB2 Universal Database® Enterprise Server Edition V8.1 and IBM WebSphere MQ V5.3.0.2 are included for the needs of the WebSphere Business Integration Server components. Full licenses must be acquired for any purpose other than specified in the license.

New in WebSphere InterChange Server

The primary focus for this incremental release is the replacement of Borland VisiBroker Object Request Broker technology with equivalent IBM technology. This is used internally to the server and rarely accessed directly by end users when implementing solutions. Inclusion of IBM technology will better enable IBM to support and enhance the solution.

For Microsoft Windows platform users, an IBM version of the Java Virtual Machine is provided to enhance overall server performance.

Support for the Windows NT platform is withdrawn in this release.

Enhancements have been made to enable business activities executing under control of the InterChange Server to be tracked by the IBM WebSphere Business Integration Modeler V4.2.4, or later. Business activities that involve WebSphere MQ Workflow and WebSphere InterChange Server Working Together® can also be tracked.

Error message logging is enhanced with a configurable stack Trace capability.

New in WebSphere Business Integration Toolset V4.2.2

The primary focus for this incremental release is the replacement of Borland VisiBroker Object Request Broker technology with equivalent IBM technology. This is used internally to the Toolset and rarely accessed directly by end users when implementing solutions. Inclusion of IBM technology will better enable IBM to support and enhance the solution.

Design time interoperability with IBM WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker V5 is enhanced with some minor changes to reflect Message set specification improvements between V2.1 and V5.

A Collaboration Debugger tool is introduced with this release to aid in the testing of collaboration objects executing in the InterChange Server. Accessible from the System Manager and Integrated Test Environment views, this tool provides the capability to visually set breakpoints in the business process execution flow, and step through the process examining data values and variables.

For system monitoring, data probes are user-defined elements in a business process collaboration for the collection of business object information which may then be aggregated and displayed in the Web browser-based dashboard. This capability has been enhanced to support hierarchical objects (objects that contain other objects as elements).

The System Manager has been enhanced with System View, a tool for displaying the components that exist in the server repository and for administering WebSphere InterChange Servers on the intranet. This capability was previously available as a standalone tool (monitor.exe) and is no longer included with this offering since its capabilities are addressed either by System View or the Web browser-based System Monitor. Monitoring of InterChange Server, Collaboration, and Adapter agent status is now incorporated into System View.

New in WebSphere Business Integration Adapters V2.4

The WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker will support the integration of the InterChange Server with WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker. The adapter has not been renamed in this release. This release of adapters supports both WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker V5 and its predecessor WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker V2.1.

The Adapter Framework (agent runtime) is upgraded with the IBM ORB technology. A WebSphere MQ triggered Object Activation Daemon (OAD) replaces the VisiBroker OAD in the Adapter Agent.

Support for the Microsoft Windows NT platform is discontinued.

New in WebSphere MQ Workflow V3.4

Support Pack 3 will be available for download at the time of this release, completing the support for Oracle 9i by adding Oracle 9i Release 2 support for HP-UX. Support Pack 3 also adds support for Windows 2003, Windows Terminal Server, and IBM WebSphere Portal Server V4.2.

New in WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker for Multiplatforms V5

WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker for Multiplatforms V5, formerly WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker, is the latest release of the message broker component for the WebSphere Business Integration Server replacing WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker V2.1.

V5 features:

  • Eclipse V2-based design studio
  • Tools compatibility with WebSphere Studio Application Developer
    • Very high performance, real-time Internet and intranet communications
    • Web Services
    • Mobile and wireless devices
    • Telemetry

The role of the Message Broker component within WebSphere Business Integration Server enables solution designers to:

  • Integrate existing applications to existing or new applications
  • Visualize the application flow through the use of a graphical development environment
  • Transform, augment, apply rules, and route/distribute message-based data between high-performance systems
  • Integrate application data with business data using dynamic content and topic-based publish/subscribe
  • Deploy, configure, and manage application integration flows requiring multiple run-times

The Message Broker transforms and enriches in-flight information to provide a level of intermediation between applications that use different message structures and formats.

Message Broker features an open tooling framework where functions defined as nodes can be wired together and visualized as flow sequences to operate on the content of the messages. A Java API plug-in facility allows third-party processing nodes to manipulate message data, and extend the broker capabilities, for example specialist message format parsers, as well as custom Java application invocation from message flows.

Accelerators for your business success

IBM provides a wide range of complementary products and support packs that make the implementation of WebSphere Business Integration solutions faster and smoother, and that can help organizations realize a faster return on their integration investments.

IBM WebSphere Business Integration Adapters

Product positioning

WebSphere Business Integration, a comprehensive business integration platform, enables businesses to implement very rapid solutions to specific integration problems, and then grow with the requirements to solve complex business integration problems requiring a wide variety of integration capabilities.

WebSphere Business Integration provides, in one offering, a business integration platform that can be used to:

  • Solve many different business integration problems
  • Integrate applications or systems on diverse platforms
  • Create and deploy new processes
  • Link people into a new business approach

A business integration platform can help you meet a wide range of integration needs:

  • Rapid deployment of integration to support an immediate departmental project to counter a competitive business threat
  • Linking of a worldwide call center rollout to a range of local and central support systems to improve customer satisfaction
  • Adopting a new application package that needs to be connected to other systems
  • Introducing supply chain management to connect all parts of the value chain
  • Creating a blueprint for an enterprise-wide integration platform to support a long-term strategic initiative

These diverse needs imply a wide spectrum of integration requirements from straightforward application connectivity to full business process integration and include extending solutions beyond the traditional boundaries of the enterprise.

Application connectivity addresses the requirements for connecting various applications, allowing information to be shared and used across the heterogeneous application systems typically found in the enterprise.

Business process integration allows the business to control and coordinate activities across various process constituents, people and applications, internal and external to the enterprise, in ways that fully and efficiently implement defined business processes.

With WebSphere Business Integration Server businesses can start small and scale rapidly. They can support multiple platforms and implement a reusable open integration infrastructure that spans departmental initiatives, and evolves as more projects emerge, becoming the integration backbone of whole enterprise. With IBM's open, modular, standards-based WebSphere middleware, businesses can decide which project to implement first, and achieve the end-to-end integration with a phased approach.

WebSphere Business Integration Toolset provides comprehensive tooling to generate the artifacts required for an enterprise integration solution, (including, for example, process collaborations, workflows, message flows, and business objects).

The WebSphere Business Integration overall architecture enables projects to be designed and implemented based on the concept of separation of function:

  • Core business application logic remains in the packaged and legacy applications that are being integrated.
  • Logic, specific to routing and transformation, is contained in an application connectivity layer.
  • Cross-application business process logic is contained in the process integration layer.

This means that WebSphere Business Integration Server is particularly suited for solving integration problems through incremental implementation. The advanced architecture gives companies the greatest opportunity to reuse packaged application business logic and in-house application logic, as well as any process routines previously built to implement middleware logic.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities: The customer must provide the minimum hardware and software environments on which the licensed programs reside.

The customer must identify the machines on which they will install IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server. The customer or Program Provider will identify the number of processors in each machine and then calculate the total number of processor license units (PLUs) required.

Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product.

Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.

Direct customer support: For support, new customers with Passport Advantage contracts should call 800-IBM-SERV (426-7378).
