Key prerequisites

A supported Web server is needed to deploy the Web-based system monitoring capability.

A supported relational database management system (RDBMS) needs to be acquired as a repository for WebSphere InterChange Server. Where InterChange Server is acquired as a component of a WebSphere Business Integration Server solution, a restricted use license is available for IBM DB2 Universal Database® V8.1 for this purpose.

A supported RDBMS needs to be acquired as a repository for WebSphere Business Integration Toolset only if using the Integrated Test Environment facility.

Refer to the Software requirements and Hardware requirements sections for more details.

Description

WebSphere InterChange Server

WebSphere InterChange Server is available as a component of IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server. It addresses the need for efficiency and flexibility in automating and synchronizing business activities executed across multiple applications as business processes.

Business processes that are executed by the InterChange Server are called collaborations. Collaboration templates are XML process definitions designed visually using the Process Designer and related tools in the WebSphere Business Integration Toolset. Collaborations can call other collaborations to modularize complex activities, and benefit from the reuse of frequently used process segments.

The templates are used to generate the processes that are executed in the InterChange Server (collaboration objects). A portfolio of prebuilt collaborations (templates and objects), together with their associated business object definitions, is available to accelerate business process implementation. These are licensed separately as IBM WebSphere Business Integration Collaborations, and cover common business process solutions for cross-industry and industry-specific solutions which can be customized using the WebSphere Business Integration Toolset to meet specific requirements of the customer.

The InterChange Server features a common business object model. This allows the collaboration processes to be developed independently of the applications that will be connected to the InterChange Server to participate in the business process. It does this by having the collaboration operate on generic (canonical) business objects, and then have changes mapped to application-specific objects which are then ready to be delivered in a format acceptable to the receiving application. If an industry-standard format for business object exchange is available between applications connected, this mapping phase may be bypassed.

When the collaboration is ready for deployment, it is associated with the adapters that will send and receive business events between the InterChange Server and the applications participating in the business process. A portfolio of prebuilt, bidirectional adapters is available that can be configured to use either asynchronous (JMS, WebSphere MQ) or synchronous (IIOP, HTTP) transports for connectivity. These are licensed separately as IBM WebSphere Business Integration Adapters. The portfolio includes technical adapters and enterprise business application adapters. All adapters benefit from a common runtime called the Adapter Framework. Also available separately from the InterChange Server is an Adapter Developer Kit that allows custom adapters to be built that exploit the common runtime. Once developed, those adapters are also compatible with IBM WebSphere Application Server and IBM WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker products. WebSphere InterChange Server has the capability to connect to geographically remote applications using adapters without an InterChange Server being present at the remote site. This takes advantage of IBM WebSphere MQ messaging transport, and firewall software proxy capability (WebSphere MQ Internet pass-thru).

WebSphere InterChange Server also provides programmable interfaces for direct synchronous connection to CORBA and Enterprise JavaBeans component applications hosted by an application server, such as WebSphere Application Server. These are licensed separately from the WebSphere InterChange Server as:

  • IBM WebSphere InterChange Server Access (CORBA)
  • IBM WebSphere InterChange Server Access for Enterprise JavaBeans
  • IBM WebSphere InterChange Server Access for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Connector Architecture

New in WebSphere InterChange Server V4.2.2

The primary focus for this incremental release is the replacement of Borland VisiBroker Object Request Broker technology with equivalent IBM technology. This is used internally to the server and rarely accessed directly by end users when implementing solutions. Inclusion of IBM technology will better enable IBM to support and enhance the solution.

For Microsoft™ Windows platform users, an IBM version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is included to enhance overall server performance. Support for the Windows NT platform is withdrawn in this release.

Enhancements have been made in V4.2.2 to enable business activities executing under the control of the InterChange Server to be tracked by the IBM WebSphere Business Integration Modeler V4.2.4, or later. Used in conjunction with the IBM WebSphere Business Integration Adapter for WebSphere MQ Workflow V2.5, business activities that involve WebSphere MQ Workflow and WebSphere InterChange Server working in unison can be tracked.

Error message logging is enhanced with a configurable stack trace capability.

New in WebSphere Business Integration Toolset V4.2.2

The primary focus for this incremental release is the replacement of Borland VisiBroker Object Request Broker technology with equivalent IBM technology. This is used internally to the Toolset and rarely accessed directly by end users when implementing solutions. Inclusion of IBM technology will better enable IBM to support and enhance the solution.

Design time interoperability with IBM WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker V5 is enhanced with some minor changes to reflect message set specification improvements between V2.1 and V5.

A Collaboration Debugger tool is introduced with this release to aid in the testing of collaboration objects executing in the InterChange Server. Accessible from the System Manager and Integrated Test Environment views, this provides the capability to visually set breakpoints in the business process execution flow, and step through the process examining data values and variables.

For system monitoring, data probes are user-defined elements in a business process collaboration for the collection of business object information, which may then be aggregated and displayed in Web browser-based dashboard. This capability has been enhanced to support hierarchical objects (objects that contain other objects as elements).

The System Manager has been enhanced with System View, a tool for displaying the components that exist in the server repository and for administering WebSphere InterChange Servers on the intranet. This capability was previously available as a standalone tool (monitor.exe) which is no longer included with this offering since its capabilities are addressed either by System View or the Web browser-based System Monitor. Monitoring of InterChange Server, Collaboration, and Adapter agent status is now incorporated into System View.

Product positioning

IBM WebSphere InterChange Server, together with WebSphere MQ Workflow and WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker, is positioned as a core component of the IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server offering. The role of the InterChange Server is to address the need for efficiency and flexibility in automating and synchronizing business activities executed across multiple applications — located both locally or remote, internally or in partner organizations.

IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server delivers a comprehensive business integration platform. IBM's business process integration solution helps companies create and execute processes that span diverse applications, enterprises, and workgroups, and helps to manage those processes, as well as the components that support those processes, as a unified, extensible and flexible solution. Having implemented a solution, companies should be able to more easily accommodate change with respect to applications and refine processes to meet new business needs.
