IBM Lotus Workplace Messaging
Overview
IBM Lotus software, the leader in enterprise messaging, now provides IBM Lotus Workplace Messaging V1.1, a low-cost, standards-based messaging solution that is security rich, scalable, easily deployed and can be integrated across existing infrastructures to take full advantage of current IT investments. Enhanced with support for the Lotus Workplace environment, Lotus Workplace Messaging is built on proven IBM technologies that include core elements of WebSphere and DB2®. Lotus Workplace Messaging provides low cost Web browser, portal, and POP3-based messaging access to corporate messaging and directory infrastructures to enable messaging capabilities to be extended to baseline employees who do not currently have access to the organization's e-mail.
This standards-based messaging capability integrates easily with a variety of messaging infrastructures, including IBM Lotus Domino, as well as with portals, browsers, standards-based e-mail clients, and other Lotus Workplace product capabilities. Scalable, easy-to-use and maintain, with support for SSL session encryption and additional security features, Lotus Workplace Messaging capabilities provide a low cost, on demand messaging solution for the rest of your organization.
Features
IBM Lotus Workplace Messaging helps enable organizations to communicate more directly with timely information to these baseline or "unserved" employees and, at the same time, can reduce expenses by helping to minimize the need for printed materials, postage, and response tracking currently required. This can help organizations increase the speed of communications containing critical information to help reduce costs, improve productivity, and increase competitive advantage.
Uniquely positioned to offer extended business value, Lotus Workplace Messaging is seamlessly integrated into the Lotus Workplace environment. Customers who have made (or are planning) the decision to create an on demand operating environment can purchase Lotus Workplace Messaging for cost-effective e-mail for baseline users while also providing the foundation for customers and Business Partners wanting to solve their need for people integration as they deploy their operating environments and move towards becoming an on demand business.
With Lotus Workplace Messaging, you are able to:
- Extend easy-to-use, reliable messaging to traditionally unserved employees to help save time and money, and increase productivity
- Leverage existing infrastructure and IT investments
- Integrate Workplace Messaging easily with your existing messaging and directory infrastructure using LDAP and SMTP standards
- Help decrease total cost of ownership through low license costs, high scalability, multiple platform support, user-friendly browser interface, low-touch client deployments, and more
- Deploy standards-based security features to help protect your network
- Leverage the latest open-standards-based messaging built on core elements of proven WebSphere and DB2 technology
Benefits
Lotus Workplace Messaging enables organizations to boost productivity with more efficient communications. Many employees in industries like manufacturing, retail, distribution, or construction often have limited or no access to their organizations' electronic business communications. These employees could include retail clerks, factory floor workers, or construction workers who don't have access to e-mail which can make receiving and responding to critical business information efficiently a challenge. For example, hand delivering printed weekly work schedules or mailing benefits information can be costly and time-consuming, and can ultimately decrease productivity.
Organizations need a user-friendly, cost-effective way to communicate with these unserved employees. And IT administrators need a solution that is reliable, security rich, and easy to manage and deploy; a solution that coexists alongside the current messaging infrastructure, allowing them to leverage IT investments.
Lotus Workplace Messaging can also help lower cost of ownership by integrating with your existing directory and messaging infrastructure. Leveraging your current IT investment is critical to helping reduce costs and simplify deployment. Lotus Workplace Messaging enables you to integrate with any standards-based messaging infrastructure, including IBM Lotus Domino or Microsoft Exchange, by using industry standards like LDAP and SMTP. You can use your existing third-party LDAP directory, such as Domino Directory, Microsoft Exchange, or Microsoft Active Directory, to easily connect Lotus Workplace Messaging to your existing directory infrastructure. This eliminates the need to invest in a separate internal directory with redundant attributes, and lets you leverage your existing LDAP capabilities and knowledge so you don't need to spend more money or time learning new skills. A standard LDAP directory also lets you transparently merge your existing messaging solution like Lotus Domino and the new Lotus Workplace Messaging server so existing and new users can communicate electronically with each other by locating e-mail addresses across multiple LDAP directories. Or if you prefer, you can use the standards-based LDAP directory IBM Directory Server provided with Lotus Workplace Messaging.
Using the latest SMTP and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) standards for transporting Internet e-mail helps Lotus Workplace Messaging users send and receive e-mail messages reliably and with high interoperability.

| Technical information |
Specified operating environment
Hardware requirements
Server CPU and memory requirements
This section describes the minimum server CPU and memory requirements for each server platform supported by the 1.1 versions of the IBM Lotus Workplace products.
Microsoft Windows 2000 systems
- Four 2 GHz, or faster processor
- 2 GB, or more RAM
- Recommend NTFS file system
- Virtual memory or swap space double the amount of physical memory is recommended; at a minimum, virtual memory or swap space should be at least equal to the amount of physical memory
Linux systems
- Quad Pentium 4 processor at 1.4 GHz, or higher
- 2 GB, or more RAM
- Virtual memory or swap space double the amount of physical memory is recommended; at a minimum, virtual memory or swap space should be at least equal to the amount of physical memory
AIX® systems
-
IBM
pSeries® 630 Model 6E4
- 4 processors 1.45 GHz, or faster
- 4 GB RAM
- Virtual memory or swap space double the amount of physical memory is recommended; at a minimum, virtual memory or swap space should be at least equal to the amount of physical memory
Server disk space requirements
Installing IBM WebSphere® Application Server, IBM WebSphere Portal, IBM HTTP Server, Lotus Workplace products, and the Lotus Workplace product databases, requires a minimum of 13 GB of free disk space. This amount does not include the disk space required to install the database product.
If you use a two-computer deployment or a multiple-computer network deployment, a server that stores the Lotus Workplace databases requires a minimum of 8 GB of free disk space, and a computer that stores the other Lotus Workplace software components requires a minimum of 5 GB of free disk space.
Note: The Linux ext2 file system, used by default on Linux, does not allow changes to the file system size. Therefore, you should plan disk space requirements carefully.
Estimating Disk Space Requirements for Lotus Workplace Messaging V1.1
DB2® stores mail messages, address books, calendar data, and attachments. Before you install Lotus Workplace Messaging, you must determine the number of messaging user accounts and the allowable mailbox size for each account. The required disk space will then dictate the number of disk drives required. By default, Lotus Workplace Messaging allots 60 MB of storage to each mail account. The total disk space for the mail data must be at least 400 MB.
For detailed mail store disk sizing information, refer to the online help in the InfoCenter.
Estimating the data store size for IBM Lotus Workplace Collaborative Learning V1.1
The amount of space required for the data and indexes that comprise a Collaborative Learning database depends on the following factors:
- Number of courses
- Number of rostered users
- Average courses per user
- Average nodes (course elements) per course
Use the following formulas to estimate the size of the data and indexes in a Collaborative Learning database:
To estimate the data size (in kilobytes), use this formula: data size in kilobytes = numberOfCourses * (57 + avgNodesPerCourse * 30.4) + numberOfUsers * (10 + avgCoursesPerUser * [3.8 + avgNodesPerCourse * 1.1]).
To estimate the index size (in kilobytes), use this formula: index size in kilobytes = numberOfCourses * (12.3 + avgNodesPerCourse * 1.4) + numberOfUsers * (1.5 + avgCoursesPerUser * [1.6 + avgNodesPerCourse * 0.14]).
Add the data size to the index size to calculate the required disk space. If the Learning Management and Learning Delivery servers are installed on one machine, multiply the result by two to determine the required disk space.
Network connectivity requirements
To use Lotus Workplace products across a network, the following is required for the computer running Lotus Workplace products:
- Network adapter and connection to a physical network that can carry IP packets. For example, Ethernet, token ring, ATM, and so on.
- Static IP address.
- Configured fully qualified host name. The portal system must be able to resolve an IP address from its fully qualified host name. To ensure that the host name is configured correctly, type the ping command from a command line; for example, ping hostname.yourco.com, where hostname.yourco.com is the fully qualified host name.
Recommended hardware (AIX operating system)
-
IBM
pSeries 630 Model 6E4
- Four 1.45 GHz processors
- 4 GB RAM
- 36 GB disk storage space (additional space may be required if DB2 Universal Database® is located on the same machine)

| IBM Electronic Services |
IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put
you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution
that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on
the IBM . You should benefit
from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and pre-emptive monitoring. IBM
Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic
Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM system. It is designed to
proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic
customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware
error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service
agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware
problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service
that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected
through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they
are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
