OverviewIf you would like to automate your storage administration process in order to help leverage your investment in storage resources, reduce costs, and free your IT experts to address more critical issues, then you will be interested in IBM Tivoli® Storage Optimizer for z/OS® V2.1. This powerful storage management tool provides a Java-based focal point for status reporting, trend analysis, setting of alert thresholds, and issuing commands across multiple z/OS storage resources in multiple dataplexes and locations. What's new V2.1 of IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS can provide:
DescriptionEnterprise storage requirements can grow at a significant annual rate. Effective management of the storage resources in an enterprise can require a high level of expertise which can become a problem as experts age and/or leave the workforce. You can be faced with the challenge of effectively managing an increasing number of complex storage resources with fewer experts to do the job, while also dealing with the pressure to reduce costs. IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 provides automated monitoring of storage resources and many administrative, analysis, and reporting features to help keep you in control of your storage devices. IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 proactively examines storage environments and can address various concerns before they impact your Service Level Agreements. Automated monitoring of storage resources, can help you to maximize productivity and reduce costs by leveraging your storage resources and freeing your IT experts to address the most critical problems. IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 can help solve storage problems by automating storage administration processes. This can help you concentrate on your business objectives instead of having to deal with problems associated with an ever-increasing number of complex enterprise storage resources. IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 can provide automatic monitoring of certain critical storage resources with unattended problem identification and analysis, and can implement associated corrective actions. Automated storage management IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 can automatically discover your z/OS environment. Administrators can then set up rules, thresholds, responses, and corrective actions to proactively manage DASD resources. With trend analysis, administrators can locate resources that are over used or seldom used. While IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 manages certain resources automatically, administrators and computer operators are free to address other critical problems. Additional features include:
When you work with storage resources, you can identify some of the problem areas immediately, such
as which drives or volumes tend to appear with "drive full" errors more quickly or what capacity
threshold is preferred for your site. With IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1, you can
identify a virtually unlimited number of scopes (subsets) to help monitor your resources by dataset,
device, array, SMS management class, or an esoteric. You can then specify what actions should be
taken when a problem occurs. With the scope, criteria, and actions defined, IBM Tivoli Storage
Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 can monitor your resources and can automatically perform the defined action
when the problem occurs on the specific scope.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
IBM Tivoli Storage Optimizer for z/OS V2.1 is capable as of October 21, 2003, when used in

Value Unit based pricingValue Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the Parallel Sysplex License Charge (PSLC) pricing curve which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities. There is also a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity will be based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) you have already installed. For example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value
Units of another product.
IPLA and Subscription and Support considerationsInternational Program License Agreement (IPLA) licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370, System/390® and zSeries® Machine Exhibit , Z125-3901.
Value Units for IBM There will be a tool available that provides support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of z/Series systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs.
