DescriptionWebSphere MQ Express provides secure, transaction-oriented connectivity for most types of applications (IBM, home-grown, and established software packages like SAP and Oracle) by passing data (information packets) as messages between your business applications. It prevents the loss of data by using message queuing and transactional transport facilities. You don't have to write complex integration code or migrate your data into the WebSphere MQ Express network; just use your data from where it currently exists. WebSphere MQ Express enables applications to talk to each other across a network of unlike components (processors, operating systems, subsystems, and communication protocols) by using simple and consistent APIs. Why MQ? MQ means messaging and queuing.
A real-life analogy Think of WebSphere MQ Express as being like the perfect postal service. It delivers all different kinds of packages to the correct address anywhere in the world, without ever losing a package. Packages can be anything from a large set of books to something as simple as a postcard. Messages are the WebSphere MQ Express equivalent of these postal packages and just like the perfect mail service, WebSphere MQ Express assures that they will be delivered once (and only once) to the correct destination. With MQ, you put whatever you want into a message a text document, a spreadsheet, an inventory, a receipt, a picture and place the message in a queue (the WebSphere MQ Express equivalent of the mailbox). WebSphere MQ Express collects your message and places it in the recipient's queue, ready for when the receiver is ready to deal with it. It's as simple as that. There's no need for the receiving program to be running when you send your message(s). In fact, WebSphere MQ Express can even start the receiving program when the first message arrives (which is a bit like the mailman ringing the door bell after placing your mail in your mailbox). Of course, WebSphere MQ Express can do many other things, but the fundamental principals are very simple: reliable, assured, time-independent delivery of messages so that your business information is available when you want it, where you want it. Convinced? Designed to meet the needs of mid-market businesses, WebSphere MQ Express combines the power and function of industry-leading business integration middleware with a smaller investment for a low-risk, affordable entry to e-business. By integrating applications that you rely on, information can flow easily around your organization and to your business partners and customers. With WebSphere MQ Express, computers and applications within your organization can communicate quickly, reliably, and seamlessly. Integrated offering for new e-business projects As complex as it may seem, the task of integration can be greatly simplified by using open, standards-based middleware that integrates diverse systems and solutions. And as business needs change, a well-integrated infrastructure can make you flexible enough to adapt to changing business requirements and to accommodate multiple, complex technologies as the needs require. Connecting applications and sharing business information quickly is the foundation on which successful business integration is built. In the e-business on demand era, the need for integrated technologies is key. Simplified application connectivity Without dedicated application connectivity software, sharing business information between applications can be difficult at best or even impossible. The applications that you use to run your business may come from a number of different sources, both from within your company and from outside vendors. These applications can produce information in a variety of different formats that may be incompatible or running on different computers. Business information can be moved safely and securely to wherever you need it within or outside your business without writing complex networking code. Not only does this speed up development time for integration projects and new application development, but it can also make your business information more widely available within your company and greatly reduce the time to integrate further applications in the future. If you need to move applications or data to different computers, for example, to help with load-balancing, you can do so without changing your applications, further reducing the cost of running and maintaining your business software. Powerful development facilities WebSphere MQ Express simplifies your integration tasks by providing a functionally rich yet easy-to-use application development interface that removes the data movement and storage logic from the application, allowing you to focus on the business logic. By using either the Java Message Service (JMS) or the WebSphere MQ API (the MQI), you can concentrate on what is most important to you the business logic by allowing WebSphere MQ Express to manage the storing and moving of your data. Easy to install and use WebSphere MQ Express is easy to install and simple to use. You can benefit from its powerful application connectivity capabilities without specialist training or knowledge. WebSphere MQ Express includes the following ease-of-use features:
Assured delivery WebSphere MQ Express can ensure that data is not lost because of failures in the underlying system or network infrastructure. This assured delivery enables WebSphere MQ Express to form the backbone of critical communication systems and to be entrusted with delivering high-value data. Options allow you to select a less robust quality of service for increased performance on your less-critical data. End-to-end security Out-of-the-box system security is a high priority for WebSphere MQ Express. The SSL function provides authentication, message integrity checking, and data encryption for data sent across the Internet. SSL has become the de facto standard for Internet security and is widely available on different operating systems. Clustering One of the major benefits of WebSphere MQ Express is its ability to provide applications with broad access to business information (also known as messages). Your applications continue to work, unchanged, even if the messages are moved to a different computer (that runs WebSphere MQ Express or WebSphere MQ) at a different physical location. This is achieved by clustering. You gain wider access to your business information by decoupling your applications from the network. Simpler setup of networks with far fewer definitions saves time. Clustering is also a powerful tool that can help you balance workloads across computers. You can move applications and message queues to different supported platforms without changing your application code. Time-independent processing In business, it is important that information is available when you need it, which doesn't necessarily mean that it needs to be available as soon as it is sent, provided it's there when you want to use it. WebSphere MQ Express allows you to send business information to other parts of your business or to business partners or customers without waiting for it to arrive, safe in the knowledge that as soon as they are able to receive it, the information will be delivered. This is particularly useful when the sender and recipient work in different time zones or in different countries. Nearly everything to almost anything Most businesses now find themselves with a wide variety of computers acquired over the years or gained as a result of mergers and acquisitions. Getting business applications to talk to each other across that mixed environment is a difficult and time-consuming task. As the business grows and becomes increasingly more dispersed, applications will need to talk to each other over greater distances. Of course, you can go on piecing the technology together yourself, but will it become an unmanageable tangle? You must cut through the complexities and get programs to talk to each other whenever and wherever there is business to be done. WebSphere MQ Express is that way. Support for growth WebSphere MQ Express does more than just enable you to manage the technology you have today more effectively. It gives you a clear path to the future a flexible infrastructure in which you can develop and deploy new applications faster and more cost effectively, without writing complex communications code. WebSphere MQ Express is part of a suite of products that enables your software to grow seamlessly with your business. Eclipse-based user interface In line with IBM's common tooling strategy, the WebSphere MQ Express File Transfer utility uses IBM's strategic WebSphere Studio Workbench. Based on the Eclipse open-source framework, this powerful, easy-to-use tooling greatly enhances the developer experience. This single, consistent tools model across the WebSphere portfolio ensures that valuable skills can be developed and deployed across a wide variety of industry-leading platforms, from WebSphere Application Server to WebSphere Business Integration Server, ensuring a clear protection of your investment.
