WVS V4.2 is a software product that can be integrated with other software and hardware telephony products to speech-enable these products.
A customer using an application developed with WebSphere Voice Server places a telephone call from either a landline or mobile phone.
- A telephony server answers this telephone call, which is a PC or UNIX® server with special telephony hardware that allows it to answer telephone calls.
- The telephony server is also running WebSphere Voice Server, which listens to the user speaking and recognizes words.
- These recognized words are then passed to the application, running on WebSphere Application Server, which performs the desired transaction and sends the resulting text back to the WebSphere Voice Server.
- The WVS then uses the text to synthesize speech, which the telephony server routes back to the handset where the caller can hear it.
WebSphere Voice Response for AIX V3.1 (5724-C35, PN BL00TNA) has been enhanced to include a VoiceXML V2 Browser which supports the VoiceXML 2.0 specification. It also provides complimentary copies of development tools, Voice Toolkit V4.2 for WebSphere Studio and WebSphere Studio Site Developer V5 (single license), to enable the customer to more easily set up a complete voice solution.
WVS V4.2 can be used for the following purposes:
Voice-Enabling Server applications
- Using open voice standards, software server applications, built on open industry standards, can be enabled for voice access. This allows customers access to voice-enabled Web applications by using a telephone either wired or wireless.
- Voice-enable existing DTMF and pre-recorded audio IVR applications with speech recognition and TTS capabilities.

Limitations: When used with Dialogic and Cisco or Siemens HiPath Telephone Environments, if the IBM ViaVoice® desktop product is installed on the target system, it must be uninstalled before installing this package.
When used with WebSphere Voice Response for AIX environment:

WebSphere Voice Response uses a VoiceXML browser application packaged with WebSphere Voice Response.
VoiceXML uses application stored on a Web server instead of applications stored on WebSphere Voice
Response. Therefore, it does not use DirectTalk® SSI environment for managing applications.
To install the new Feature VoiceXML 2.0 and Java Enhancements for WebSphere Voice Response for AIX V3.1, any already installed DTBE file sets must be uninstalled.
WVS for Voice Response for AIX V4.2 is not compatible with previous versions. Previous versions of WVS for Voice Response for AIX must be uninstalled before installing WVS V4.2.
Planning information
Customer responsibilities: It is the customer's responsibility to provide a technician with telephony platform expertise to set up the telephony environment and configure the gateways.
It is strongly recommended that planning and implementation of WVS be done with an integration agreement with IBM Global Services or other capable service provider. Contact your IBM Voice Systems representative for more information.
Packaging: WVS V4.2 is shipped in 31 separate Passport Advantage media pack packages of which it is normally necessary to order a minimum of two:
- One containing the base connection environment WebSphere Voice Server V4.2 code
- A minimum of one language product to provide the desired language support for Speech Recognition and Formant TTS
- If Concatenative TTS desired, then the correct language product containing the CTTS product
Notes
- Refer to the Ordering information section for a list of languages available with specific telephony or operating system platforms.
- CTTS may be ordered and executed in a stand-alone environment (without requiring the of WVS base product as a prerequisite) with the customer assuming responsibility for providing the necessary interface code.
Each media pack package contains one or more CD-ROMs, which contain:

- Softcopy license (IPLA) which must be agreed to before installing the code
- Softcopy product documentation
Security, auditability, and control
WVS uses the security and auditability features of the host hardware or software.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features,

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the product(s) announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option that is available.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. This assistance is not available to your end users. IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Guide at:
Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
