New in V1.3

The new HDB provides a flexible and easy-to-use facility for collecting and managing historical performance data for your CICS systems. The CICS PA HDB function provides:

  • Short-term history data detailing individual transaction performance for use in performance problem analysis
  • Long-term history data summarized over time can be used for trend analysis and capacity planning
  • A powerful and flexible definition facility for the historical data repositories
  • Comprehensive reporting facilities
  • A facility to optionally load history data into DB2 for further analysis and reporting using DB2 reporting tools such as Query Management Facility (QMF)
  • Definition and management of the HDBs from the CICS PA ISPF dialog
  • New WebSphere MQ Reports use the WebSphere MQ Accounting data (SMF 116 records) to provide a detailed performance analysis of the CICS transactions that access an WebSphere MQ external subsystem

The WebSphere MQ List reports provide a trace of the WebSphere MQ accounting records, reporting the comprehensive performance data contained in the subtype 0, 1, and 2 records. The WebSphere MQ Summary reports provide, summarized by either CICS Transaction ID or by WebSphere MQ queue name, an analysis of the WebSphere MQ system and queue resource used and the transactions the WebSphere MQ queues service.

  • New CMF reports are enhanced to include comprehensive reporting for the Temporary Storage Transaction resource class data for CICS TS, V1.3 and V2.2.

    Three new reports are provided:

    1. Transaction resource usage list report provides a list of all transaction resource class records for each transaction, detailing their individual temporary storage queue (and file) usage.
    2. Transaction temporary storage usage summary report summarizes the temporary storage usage by transaction ID. For each transaction ID, it gives transaction and temporary storage statistics followed by a breakdown of temporary storage usage for each temporary storage queue used.
    3. Temporary storage usage summary report summarizes, for each temporary storage queue, the temporary storage usage by transaction ID.

In addition, the transaction resource usage file list Report, introduced in CICS PA, V1.2 with PTF UQ65327, has been further enhanced with the provision of file usage totals.

A new performance wait analysis report delivers transaction activity by wait time. This report summarizes, by transaction ID, the resources that cause a transaction to be suspended and highlights the CICS system resource bottlenecks that may be causing bad response time. This new report enables a more detailed analysis, focusing on the problem resources identified, to be more easily performed.

  • ISPF Dialog Interface enhancements allow:
    • Other data sources, including WebSphere MQ Accounting records (SMF 116 records)
    • Report Set menu restructured to allow easier selection of reports and extracts
    • More flexible and easier-to-use Report Set JCL generation
    • Additional report form samples

  • Enhanced report forms capability using Report Forms has been enhanced to allow the specification of Selection Criteria.

CICS PA provides an upgrade capability allowing report forms, already created from an earlier CICS PA release, to be easily updated and migrated to the CICS PA new release.

  • Other functional enhancements:
    • The performance list, list eXtended, and summary reports have been extended to support all CMF performance data fields.
    • Improved performance summary report presentation.
    • Enhanced workload activity summary report.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone
  • Tested with screen readers and screen magnifiers for use by people with visual impairment
  • Optional font enlargement and high contrast display settings
  • Audio alerts are optional for people with hearing difficulties

You can perform most tasks required to set up, and run CICS PA using a 3270 emulator logged onto TSO.

IBM Personal Communications (V5.0.1 for Windows® 95, Windows 98, Windows NT® and Windows 2000; V4.3 for OS/2®) provides 3270 emulation with accessibility features for people with disabilities. You can use this product to provide the accessibility features you need for accessing your CICS system.

Users with limited vision who work with screen reader software might find the following require particular attention:

  • Performance graph reports
    • These reports are composed of character output. Screen readers can report all of these to you but they are unlikely to convey the overall impression of the graph.
    • All data used to produce performance graph reports is available from CMF performance class data. You might find it more helpful to work with, for example, the performance summary reports or the performance export extract.
  • Pop-up windows: CICS PA uses the ISPF function that produces pop-up windows for some tasks. The pop-up and its frame are just the text that overlays the underlying information of the displayed panel. The frame of such a pop-up is not usually recognized as such by screen reader software, so you may need to gain some familiarity with reading such panels before information becomes meaningful.

A version of the product documentation, which is more suitable for use with screen reader software can be made available on request.

Value Unit-based pricing

Value Unit-based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.

There is also be a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, for example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.

International Programming License Agreement (IPLA) and subscription and support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single proof of entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning

Inability to analyze CICS performance on a regular basis can lead to missed tuning opportunities and ignoring trends can lead to poor CICS performance, or if uncorrected, cause unnecessary CICS outages.

Ordering example: The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following example.

If the customer has installed 1,500 MSUs, the applicable Value would be:

Translation from MSUs to Value Units

            MSUs * Value Units/MSU = Value Units

Base 3 * 1.00 = 3.00
Tier A 42 * .45 = 18.90
Tier B 130 * .36 = 46.80
Tier C 140 * .27 = 37.80
Tier D 1,185 * .20 = 237.00

Total 1,500 343.50

When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.

Example: For a product running on machines with 1,500 MSUs requiring 344 Value Units, order feature number 0003, quantity 94, and feature number 0002, quantity 1.

The customer must have signed the Attachment for zSeries Workload License Charges-Pre-ILM (Z125-6516) and submitted at least one Sub-Capacity Report to IBM as defined in the attachment.

With sub-capacity charges, the charge for an eligible AD, DM, or CICS tool is based on the z/OS product defined capacity. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for each eligible AD, DM, and CICS tool for each machine, the customer should:

  • Determine the MSUs needed for the machine on which the tools will run. In a data sharing environment, determine the aggregate MSUs needed on the machine where the tools run. Use the product defined capacity (MSUs) for z/OS (as specified on the Sub-Capacity Reports submitted to IBM for sub-capacity WLC) as the sub-capacity (MSUs) for each tool.
  • Submit any additional MSUs and/or Value Units required for each product along with the current entitlement in Value Units for each product.
  • If the use of sub-capacity pricing terms for AD, DM, and CICS tools results in a reduced requirement for Value Units, thus freeing up entitlements, customers can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing the Value Units across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up Value Units. Subscription and Support volumes and entitlements for existing contracts will continue to be at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

Management of the Value Unit entitlements continues to be a customer responsibility. If one of the following occur on a machine to which AD, DM, or CICS Tools are licensed, the customer must determine if additional Value Units and Subscription and Support need to be ordered for those tools to cover the increase:

  • The z/OS defined capacity is increased.
  • The requirements for WLC sub-capacity charges are no longer met.
