What's New in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1

DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 is based on Hyperion Essbase 6.5.1 and also integrates a number of enhancements from Hyperion Essbase 6.2 and 6.1. The OLAP Miner feature is included in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1. In addition, this release introduces a number of z/OS and OS/390 specific enhancements. Major enhancements available in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 include:

Hybrid Analysis for Cube Scalability: The administrator can now define a multidimensional cube where the lower level members can reside on a relational database and the higher level members reside on the multidimensional store. The OLAP Server will access the relational source, prepare the cells, and return to the calling application as if data natively resides on the multidimensional store. The OLAP Server can therefore access lower level data in a relational database seamlessly. It:

  • Improves scalability of the cube — only a smaller physical cube needs to be loaded and precalculated in Essbase while the lower, more detailed levels of data can be accessed dynamically at execution time.
  • Improves relational drill through — previously the calling application had to handle the preparation for relational drill through — a rather complex task to set up. Now the relational drill through is handled transparently by the OLAP Server for all applications.

The Hybrid Analysis function in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 essentially has extended the OLAP Server:

  • From a Multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP), which delivers excellent query performance
  • To a Hybrid OLAP (HOLAP), which combines MOLAP with Relational OLAP (ROLAP), to let the OLAP application designer create cubes based on optimized query performance and data scalability

DB2 OLAP Integration Server is required for data description tasks of Hybrid Analysis.

Parallelism to Improve Performance and Throughput: Previously the Essbase mode performed tasks serially. With DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1, parallelism is extended to help exploit the modern hardware and to improve system performance and throughput.

  • If you enable parallel calculation, Essbase analyzes all the tasks in a calculation pass and breaks them down into sub-tasks. The sub-tasks that can be run independently of each other are scheduled to run simultaneously on up to four threads, each on a separate CPU.
  • You can specify the number of processing threads to be used in parallel data load processing. These threads can be allocated across processors on multiple CPUs for performance advantages.
  • Parallel export is supported. The new PAREXPORT command enables administrators to export Essbase databases natively on multiple threads.

Integration Server Improvements: DB2 OLAP Integration Server is based on Essbase Integration Services 6.5.1.

  • Hybrid Analysis — The Integration Server Desktop is used to define the data in the relational database and map to hierarchies in the OLAP cube. The OLAP Metadata Catalog in the Integration Server is used by the OLAP Server to access the relational database.
  • Multiple data source connectivity — You can now connect data from different data sources, providing considerable flexibility in creating OLAP models with data from multiple data sources.
  • Verification of formulas — You can rapidly verify and edit static formulas before using them in Essbase, saving significant time from encountering such errors during member and data loads.
  • Automatic configuration settings for command line parameters in a configuration file are supported.

Integration Server Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:

  • The Integration Server supports multiple ports. You can start the Integration Server with a specified port number and then login from the client through that specific port number.
  • The Integration Server also allows multiple users to access a single group metadata catalog by assigning a given user to a RACF group, thus allowing sharing of the metadata catalog, a security/usability gain.
  • On the z/OS and OS/390 platform, the Integration Server also allows the user to use wild-card searches for table names, another usability gain.

Improvements via zFS: With this release, the product no longer uses VSAM/Media Manager, but instead uses zFS (zSeries File System), a UNIX file system for z/OS and OS/390, with improved performance and function. This provides customers with numerous benefits, including the following:

  • More efficient file access via buffered I/Os and deferred writes, as well as zFS file caching.
  • Performance improvements over V7.1 with Media Manager, especially in cases involving I/O-intensive cubes. Substantial improvements have been observed for load processing and some improvements have been observed for calculation processing.
  • Ease of maintenance for customers through easier data set management.

Note: It is recommended that compatibility mode aggregates be used for the initial deployment of zFS.

OLAP Miner for Deviation Discovery: DB2 OLAP Server Miner is a no-charge feature of DB2 OLAP Server. OLAP Miner combines the powerful IBM data mining technologies with OLAP technologies.

OLAP Miner enables you to examine your OLAP cubes (multidimensional databases) more thoroughly and easily by finding atypical or deviant values automatically. Instead of searching through your data manually to find data values that might be higher or lower than you expected, OLAP Miner can do this work for you. The OLAP Miner algorithm is optimized so that it can be deployed on large OLAP cubes.

You can search specific areas (subcubes) of your cubes by creating deviation detection definitions, which specify the way in which OLAP Miner examines the data that you selected for the subcube. OLAP Miner gives you an easy-to-use wizard that helps you create deviation detection definitions.

After you create a deviation detection definition, OLAP Miner applies a deviation detection algorithm to the data to find deviations. After the mining run is finished, you can view a simple list of deviations or view the deviations in the Deviation Viewer. From the Deviation Viewer, you can see the deviations in the context of other surrounding values. You can also view deviations in a standard spreadsheet application. If you have the DB2 OLAP Server spreadsheet add-in, you can use all of the features of that product to view or report deviations.

Documentation Improvements: A more comprehensive Installation and Administration Guide streamlines the installation process, resulting in significant usability improvements. It provides planning, installation, and configuration information for the product.

Client Deployment Enhancement: Client installation can now be done over the network, thus making it much easier to deploy the client for multiple users.

Server Installation Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390: include a code-page conversion utility (an ESSCONV program supplied with the product), which is required for all systems that do not use IBM-1047 as the server code page, to simplify the installation and make it easier to prevent text files from containing invalid characters.

Security Enhancements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:

  • Ability to change RACF passwords: RACF periodically requires users to change their password. This can be very inconvenient when trying to access critical OLAP information. DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 lets end users change their RACF password while accessing OLAP information, without having to go through systems programming or other security means. Instead, users can change their RACF password through the Application Manager interface or the spreadsheet interface.
  • Restricted start/stop of the Integration Server: Only the OLAP userid which started up the Integration Server will be allowed to shutdown the server, thus ensuring that unauthorized users are prevented from shutting down the Integration Server.

Administration Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:

  • DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 ships several new templates and scripts, which can be modified and customized to perform tasks such as error checking, loading, calculation, and more. This allows a fully enabled set of OLAP processes to be automated and checked, thus ensuring that the OLAP environment is ready for user-interaction. This improves production workflow and user productivity.
  • V8.1 allows customers to capture and route statistics and other information to STDOUT and STDERROR, thus providing a mechanism to collect a historical and comparative set of data, which can be used if there is a system failure, thereby improving error-handling and customer productivity.
  • The new MEMCHECK utility can be used to check for available memory, thus protecting from memory related failures and improving productivity. You can use this standalone program to tell you how much memory is left after all the OLAP loaded DLLs and the cache sizes have been taken into account.

Other Improvements: There are numerous other improvements in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 that are described in product documentation. A few are listed below:

  • Calculations can be simulated to help you select dense and sparse settings for the dimensions in your outline.
  • Substitution variables can now be used in SQL Interface.
  • Messages in the server log dealing with user logins and security changes now include additional details for auditability.
  • You can now build an outline from a data source without having to manually add at least one member first.

Relational Storage Manager Replaced with Better Approach: With the introduction of Hybrid Analysis, which provides a better approach to integrate relational data with OLAP data, the Relational Storage Manager option will no longer be available in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1. Current customers who have cubes in Relational Storage Manager will migrate to Multidimensional Storage Manager while installing V8.1, using instructions in existing documentation.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer™. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services comprises two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system that is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
