What's New in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 is based on Hyperion Essbase 6.5.1 and also integrates a number of enhancements from Hyperion Essbase 6.2 and 6.1. The OLAP Miner feature is included in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1. In addition, this release introduces a number of z/OS and OS/390 specific enhancements. Major enhancements available in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 include: Hybrid Analysis for Cube Scalability: The administrator can now define a multidimensional cube where the lower level members can reside on a relational database and the higher level members reside on the multidimensional store. The OLAP Server will access the relational source, prepare the cells, and return to the calling application as if data natively resides on the multidimensional store. The OLAP Server can therefore access lower level data in a relational database seamlessly. It:
The Hybrid Analysis function in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 essentially has extended the OLAP Server:
DB2 OLAP Integration Server is required for data description tasks of Hybrid Analysis. Parallelism to Improve Performance and Throughput: Previously the Essbase mode performed tasks serially. With DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1, parallelism is extended to help exploit the modern hardware and to improve system performance and throughput.
Integration Server Improvements: DB2 OLAP Integration Server is based on Essbase Integration Services 6.5.1.
Integration Server Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:
Improvements via zFS: With this release, the product no longer uses VSAM/Media Manager, but instead uses zFS (zSeries File System), a UNIX file system for z/OS and OS/390, with improved performance and function. This provides customers with numerous benefits, including the following:
Note: It is recommended that compatibility mode aggregates be used for the initial deployment of zFS. OLAP Miner for Deviation Discovery: DB2 OLAP Server Miner is a no-charge feature of DB2 OLAP Server. OLAP Miner combines the powerful IBM data mining technologies with OLAP technologies. OLAP Miner enables you to examine your OLAP cubes (multidimensional databases) more thoroughly and easily by finding atypical or deviant values automatically. Instead of searching through your data manually to find data values that might be higher or lower than you expected, OLAP Miner can do this work for you. The OLAP Miner algorithm is optimized so that it can be deployed on large OLAP cubes. You can search specific areas (subcubes) of your cubes by creating deviation detection definitions, which specify the way in which OLAP Miner examines the data that you selected for the subcube. OLAP Miner gives you an easy-to-use wizard that helps you create deviation detection definitions. After you create a deviation detection definition, OLAP Miner applies a deviation detection algorithm to the data to find deviations. After the mining run is finished, you can view a simple list of deviations or view the deviations in the Deviation Viewer. From the Deviation Viewer, you can see the deviations in the context of other surrounding values. You can also view deviations in a standard spreadsheet application. If you have the DB2 OLAP Server spreadsheet add-in, you can use all of the features of that product to view or report deviations. Documentation Improvements: A more comprehensive Installation and Administration Guide streamlines the installation process, resulting in significant usability improvements. It provides planning, installation, and configuration information for the product. Client Deployment Enhancement: Client installation can now be done over the network, thus making it much easier to deploy the client for multiple users. Server Installation Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390: include a code-page conversion utility (an ESSCONV program supplied with the product), which is required for all systems that do not use IBM-1047 as the server code page, to simplify the installation and make it easier to prevent text files from containing invalid characters. Security Enhancements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:
Administration Improvements Specific to z/OS and OS/390:
Other Improvements: There are numerous other improvements in DB2 OLAP Server for z/OS, V8.1 that are described in product documentation. A few are listed below:
Relational Storage Manager Replaced with Better Approach:
With the introduction of Hybrid Analysis, which provides a better approach to integrate relational
data with OLAP data, the Relational Storage Manager option will no longer be available in DB2 OLAP
Server for z/OS, V8.1. Current customers who have cubes in Relational Storage Manager will migrate
to Multidimensional Storage Manager while installing V8.1, using instructions in existing
documentation.
