The Software requirements section was clarified.
At a glanceVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 enhances interoperability between VSE and Linux on zSeries. Designed for growth, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 helps enable integrated hybrid solutions featuring the best of VSE and Linux. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 support includes:
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 will also support S/390 Multiprise 3000, S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 5 and 6, or equivalent. OverviewMany VSE customers have a hybrid IT environment that includes several different hardware and software platforms. In such environments, interoperability is a key requirement. IBM VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 extends the focus on interoperability begun with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 and continued with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 introduces functions to enhance the combination of VSE and Linux on zSeries plus support and enhancements as follows:
With Linux on zSeries, VSE customers can exploit the Linux operating system on the same zSeries or S/390® server that runs their core VSE applications. By consolidating VSE and Linux (under z/VM or LPAR) on the same server, customers gain advantages in affordability, flexibility, scalability, and manageability. Reference: Software Announcement 202-038 , dated February 19, 2002. Key prerequisitesSome S/390 servers supported by VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6 are not supported by VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7. Refer to the Hardware requirements , Software requirements , and Planning information sections for details.
Description
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 addresses the needs of VSE customers with growing traditional
S/390 workloads and/or those exploiting Linux on zSeries for new applications or server
consolidation. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 includes the following:
Hardware supportVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 adds support for new servers and advanced technology.
Servers:
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 supports IBM
HiperSockets:
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 is designed to support high-speed TCP/IP communication
among logical partitions (LPARs) and virtual machines under z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or
later, within the same IBM VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 can communicate with other HiperSockets-capable operating systems (that is, VSE to VSE, VSE to Linux, VSE to z/VM, or VSE to z/OS). In particular, HiperSockets enhances VSE interoperability by allowing high-speed connections between VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 and Linux on zSeries without physical cabling. By providing a "network-in-the-box," HiperSockets helps minimize network latency and maximize bandwidth capabilities. The z/Architecture HiperSockets function uses an adaptation of the queued direct I/O (QDIO) high-speed I/O protocol introduced with OSA-Express support. HiperSockets allows virtual machines and/or LPARs to communicate internally over the memory bus using the new internal-queued-direct I/O (IQD) channel type. In addition, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 can utilize the "guest LAN" support provided by z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or later. z/VM simulates the HiperSockets function for communication among virtual machines without real IQD channels. Using z/VM, virtual HiperSockets can be exploited by customers with S/390 Multiprise 3000, S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 5 and 6 (or equivalent servers), as well as zSeries servers within the same z/VM image. Cryptographic assist: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 supports IBM PCI Cryptographic Accelerator (PCICA) cards on zSeries servers. The PCICA card provides RSA assist for increased Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) throughput. SSL support was first introduced with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6. That support is based on software encryption only. With VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 and IBM TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5, SSL will transparently use PCICA cards if available. There is no need to change any applications already using SSL. IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) Large Volumes: IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) now offers Large Volume Support (LVS). LVS includes the ability to define 32,760 cylinder (approximately 27 GB per volume) 3390-9 volumes. Larger DASD volumes help relieve address constraints and improve disk utilization by allowing customers to consolidate several smaller disk volumes into a single larger volume. Additionally, LVS includes the ability to define "custom-sized" volumes from 1 to 32,760 cylinders. The entire 32,760 cylinders can be used by the Page Data Set, Label Area, and Lock File. VSE/POWER, Librarian, and the SAM and DAM access methods support full capacity as well. IBM Device Support Facilities (ICKDSF) Release 17 is designed to support the full capacity of ESS. VSE/VSAM is limited to 10,017 cylinders (approximately 4.5 GB). Large Volume Support is already available with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6.
OSA Express in Non-QDIO Mode:
With VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7, OSA Express is usable in non-QDIO mode by TCP/IP or
SNA environments. In non-QDIO mode, OSA Express behaves like an OSA-2 adapter. The non-QDIO mode
is helpful if the OSA Express Adapter needs to be shared by TCP/IP and SNA. Support is already
available in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6.
Web servicesVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 adds new, standards-based interoperability to the basic connectors introduced in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6. SOAP server/client: Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) provides a foundation for application-to-application interoperability on the Web. A service requestor sends a SOAP envelope to a service provider. The service provider acts on the request and sends back a SOAP response envelope. A VSE SOAP server allows a Web service, implemented as a CICS® program, to be called from any SOAP-enabled platform. Examples of SOAP-enabled platforms might be WebSphere® Application Server, Apache Web Server, Microsoft.NET, and so forth. A VSE SOAP client can be used by a CICS program to invoke a Web service on another SOAP-enabled platform. The VSE SOAP server/client is implemented as a CICS program using CICS Web Support (CWS). XMLAPI: SOAP is based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). XML is a flexible, application-independent, nonproprietary format. It is designed for truly portable data. The use of tags makes XML data self-describing, and the extensible nature of XML makes it possible to define new kinds of documents for specialized applications. XML is rapidly becoming the format of choice for exchange of information among various applications on the internet. XMLAPI is callable by CICS or batch programs. It allows creation or parsing of XML data streams. DL/I connector: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 adds a new DL/I connector to the existing suite of VSE e-business connectors. It is implemented as an extension of the existing Java-based Class library. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 made VSE/VSAM, VSE Librarian, VSE/POWER queues, VSE console, and ICCF Libraries accessible from any Java-capable platform. Similarly, DL/I data is now accessible in the same way. Non-Java access (VSEScript): VSEScript allows simple access to VSE resources. The function is equivalent to the Java-based connectors first introduced with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 but is designed for those who, for whatever reason, choose not to use the Java programming language. VSEScript can be called from any program able to establish a TCP/IP connection to VSE. For example, Sockets programs, CGIs, and so forth, written in common languages such as C/C++, Visual Basic (Microsoft Office), Lotus Script (Lotus SmartSuite®), and even COBOL have the same access to VSE resources that were formerly available only to Java programs. CICS Web support (CWS): CWS is now designed to fully support client authentication. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) authentication mechanism is based on the exchange of digital certificates. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 provides services that map client certificates to host-defined user IDs. With this support, CICS CWS applications can control client access to resources. In addition, with the application of appropriate service, client authentication is also available with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6. Moreover, a range of enhancements to CICS Web Support removes a number of limitations that allow more existing 3270 terminal control and BMS applications to be invoked from a Web browser without change. With VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7, these added capabilities are now available in both VSE and z/OS versions of CICS Transaction Server and contribute to z/OS affinity. These enhancements include:
With application of appropriate service, the items listed above are also available with VSE/ESA
Version 2 Release 5 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6.
Usability and availabilityVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 adds a number of miscellaneous improvements. Librarian 31-bit: The $IJBLBR.PHASE that currently resides in SVA-24 is split into two components. One continues to reside in SVA-24. The other is moved to SVA-31. The result is up to 184 KB of SVA-24 storage available for use by customer applications. Increase in VSE/POWER queue entries: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 increases the number of VSE/POWER spool entries to 100,000 (99,998 usable). The old limit was 32,768 (32,766 usable). The structure of the IJQFILE remains unchanged. The enhancement removes a potential bottleneck. Enhancements to VSE/POWER warm start: The VSE/POWER queue file can now be reallocated and extended during a warm start. In addition, a PNET node name can be changed during warm start as well. These two changes can help reduce potential downtime.
Addition of SSL to REXX SOCKET support:
The REXX/VSE SOCKET function now allows an SSL option in addition to the standard TCP/IP socket
capability. This gives programmers the ability to write REXX programs with standard security and
integrity.
Related productsVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 includes the following related products with enhancements. LE/VSE Version 1 Release 4 Modification 3 (a New Modification Level): Affinity between VSE and z/OS is enhanced by the addition of selected functions to Language Environment® for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 Modification 3 (LE/VSE V1.4.3). These include:
IBM TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 (a New Release): TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 (a new release) provides support for:
TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 is the replacement for TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 and Version 1 Release 3. It includes significant enhancements made to TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 (5686-A04) since it first became available in June 2000. These accumulated enhancements include:
TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 is available as a PTF for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6 as well. OSA Express support requires VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6, or later. Similarly, HiperSockets and PCICA encryption are available only with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7. MQSeries® for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 Modification 2 (a New Modification Level): MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 Modification 2 includes enhancements and elimination of various restrictions.
The items above are available for MQ/VSE V2.1.1 and for MQ/VSE V2.1.2 via PTF as well. Those below are available only with MQ/VSE V2.1.2.
MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 Modification 2 is planned to be available on
February 18, 2003. At that time MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1
Modification 2 documentation can be downloaded from the VSE home page.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation ActVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 is capable, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Product positioningBeginning with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5, a priority of the VSE strategy has been helping customers protect their extensive investment in VSE technology (core applications, data, IT skills, equipment, business processes, end user training, and so forth) while they implement key new applications in a three-tier, hybrid environment. Many recent VSE enhancements were designed to help customers implement integrated applications consisting of VSE/ESA and any Java-capable platform (such as Linux on zSeries). Interoperability helps customers reduce cost, disruption, and risk. At the same time, interoperability helps increase productivity and lessen time-to-market.
For example, integrated environments may include hybrid solutions based on zSeries servers running
VSE plus the user's choice of IBM VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 is designed for customers with aggressive growth opportunities. "Growth" may be generated by some combination of:
Responding to growth opportunities, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 focuses on the IBM
For example, target environments may consist of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 (running on
standard engines), linked via HiperSockets to Linux on zSeries (running on IFL engines), both
running under z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or later. This powerful and flexible application
model, implemented on an IBM
Linux on zSeries is central to the VSE strategy and vision. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7
will not support 64-bit addressing. Because protection of extensive existing core VSE investments
is a key objective for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7, there is no need for 64-bit addressing
in VSE itself. Instead, many of the newer applications that require very large address spaces are
likely to be more appropriate for Linux. Therefore, the combination of VSE/ESA Version 2
Release 7, Linux for zSeries, z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or later, and IBM VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7, along with Linux for zSeries and z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or later, may be an attractive solution for larger VSE customers who do not consider themselves candidates for z/OS in the short term. Technical informationSpecified operating environmentHardware requirementsVSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 will operate on:
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 support for IBM Specifically, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 does not support 64-bit real or virtual addresses. Therefore z/VM, with its support for 64-bit real and virtual (allowing 64-bit virtual machines such as Linux for zSeries and z/OS) addressing, is a compelling option for most VSE customers using zSeries servers. Support for S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 5 and 6, S/390 Multiprise 3000, or equivalent 31-bit servers is in basic mode, in LPAR, or under z/VM V3, or later.
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 HiperSockets support requires an IBM
VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 hardware encryption assist requires a Peripheral Component
Interconnect Cryptographic Accelerator (PCICA), or equivalent. Those customers with z/VM require
z/VM Version 4 Release 2, or later.
Software requirementsFor VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 customers using VM, z/VM V3, or later, is required to exploit state-of-the-art IBM virtualization technology for one or more of the following reasons:
z/VM V4.1, or later, is required by customers planning to use z/VM in combination with Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL), or who want the affordability advantages of engine-based pricing offered by International Program License Agreement (IPLA) Terms and Conditions. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 customers (running under z/VM) who want to exploit HiperSockets, and/or hardware encryption assist, require z/VM V4.2, or later. Note: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 will not run under z/VM V3 on servers not listed in the section on VSE/ESA V2.7 hardware requirements. To use HiperSockets for high-speed interoperability between VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 and Linux on zSeries, corresponding Linux exploitation is required. Linux on zSeries is not provided by IBM. Linux must be obtained from distributors. For the most current information on Linux distributors, refer to: Compatibility: Compatibility aspects are the same as described in Software Announcement 298-372 , dated September 29, 1998, for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. Limitations: Limitations are the same as described in Software Announcement 298-372 , dated September 29, 1998, with the following changes:
User Group Requirements: This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities. Groups include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, GUIDE/SHARE Europe (GSE), and WAVV. Requirements satisfied include:
Planning informationCustomer responsibilities: The Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) process is available for customers migrating from VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 or VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7. The following servers are not supported by VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7:
Customers should be aware that VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6 will be the last VSE release to support the older technology. Those who plan to retain any of these older S/390 servers should immediately order the latest refresh of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6, whether or not their current production VSE system is based on VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 6. Information on the status of VSE/ESA and related programs can be found at: TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5: Each feature of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 (Application Pak, NFS, GPS) requires a unique user access key. The license order for TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 can be placed either together with any other program with the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 product set or alone at a later point in time. SSL for VSE is also key protected and only usable with the key for the Application Pak. It cannot be used in demo mode and not together with the (formerly available) Base Pak. The user access key will always be generated and delivered automatically from IBM whenever an order is placed for one of these features. Customers who do not wish to use TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 5 from IBM are requested to run product delete jobs (that are provided with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7) after system installation, to delete the product from their system. Important Note: Customers who have Connectivity Systems' "TCP/IP for VSE" installed on their VSE system should read the TCP/IP for VSE/ESA IBM Program Setup and Supplementary Information (SC33-6601) for important configuration instructions, and should note that product access keys from IBM and Connectivity Systems are different and are not interchangeable. DB2 Server for VSE and VM Version 7 Release 2: DB2 Server for VSE and VM V7 uses an access/usage protection method that requires a password key to enable the software function. The password key will always be generated and delivered automatically from IBM accordingly whenever an order is placed for DB2 Server for VSE and VM V7. Software Key Management: In exceptional cases (off-line situations), it may be necessary to contact the IBM Registration Center by telephone, fax, mail, or e-mail as appropriate. Note, the IBM Registration Center cannot handle product/license orders. You may contact them only if you already have a license for your software program.
ShopZ: ShopzSeries provides an easy way to plan and order zSeries software upgrades including z/VM SDOs and VSE/ESA SIPOs. Using ShopzSeries, customers can quickly generate orders. In the case of fully entitled upgrades, it offers a fully automated process, with no IBM intervention required. Additionally, ShopzSeries will ensure your order is technically correct (that is, ensures any corequisite or prerequisite conditions are resolved to ensure timely order placement and processing). ShopzSeries is available in the United States and several countries in Europe. For more details (including geographical availability), refer to the ShopzSeries Web site at: Packaging: Depending on the order, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 will be packaged as follows:
Depending on the order, the package will contain one or more additional cartridges for the VSE/ESA optional programs, stacked one after the other on the medium. Program directories and the publication entitlement sets of the ordered VSE/ESA base and optional programs will be shipped with the VSE/ESA package. The Program Directory for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 has IBM form number GI11-2681. Note: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 is no longer available on 3480 tape cartridges (uncompressed), 6250 bpi magnetic tape reels, and 4 mm DAT cartridges. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 is available on 3480 tape cartridges (compressed) and 3590 tape cartridges only. TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and Language Environment® (LE) for VSE/ESA: TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and LE for VSE/ESA will be shipped on the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 base tape/cartridges. Users who only need Language Run-Time Support (RTS), which is part of LE for VSE/ESA, can customize their system according to this need. TCP/IP for VSE/ESA will be shipped enabled for demo mode only. This allows you to test the entire function set on your VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 7 system in a functionally limited way (not suited for any production purposes).
