Software Announcement 203-041 February 11, 2003 IBM WebSphere MQ V5.3 Changes to Processor-Based Pricing and Adds Extended Transactional Clients(Corrected on May 14, 2003)
Added paragraph to At a Glance section identifying other MQSeries products. In Description section,
changed fourth bullet under Migration Notes.
At a GlanceSimplified charging means:
WebSphere MQ is priced on a per-processor basis. The pricing structure for the extended transactional clients is equivalent to that of the WebSphere MQ server products. MQSeries for Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1, MQSeries for Solaris Intel Platform Edition V5.1, MQSeries for AT&T GIS UNIX V2.2.1, MQSeries for SINIX and DC/OSx V2.2.1, and MQSeries for OpenVMS VAX V2.2.1.1 are also now priced on a per-processor basis. WebSphere MQ further enhances its messaging capability:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: YE001). OverviewIn response to your feedback, it is now simpler to do business with IBM. You now pay for IBM software licenses on a per-processor basis for WebSphere® MQ. This is a change from the per-capacity-unit model of charging for software licenses. You should expect no general increase or decrease in net costs. However, any change in cost will depend on your unique circumstances, relating to the number of processors in your machines. The change is effective now for all new orders but does not affect existing licenses until the next Software Maintenance renewal. If you do not have a Software Maintenance contract, you are not affected by this change and should continue using your programs under the capacity-unit terms. The pricing structure for the extended transactional clients is equivalent to that of the WebSphere MQ server products. Processor-priced products will have their equivalent capacity unit products withdrawn on May 5, 2003. Extended Transactional Clients WebSphere MQ, the backbone of IBM messaging and Java Message Service (JMS) support, now supports extended transactional clients, which operate as an XA resource manager. Use these clients to:
SupportPac MA7P and SupportPac MA0R deliver WebSphere MQ classes for .NET, a convenient interface for customers who code applications in the Microsoft .NET programming framework to call WebSphere MQ. For more product information, refer to Software Announcement 202-074 , dated April 9, 2002. Key PrerequisitesClient platform requirements are similar to those for servers. Refer to Software Announcement 202-074 , dated April 9, 2002. Planned Availability Date
DescriptionCharging and License Use ManagementCharges for authorized use of the program are based on processor license units (PLUs). The use of the program on any server machine requires one PLU to be acquired (from IBM or an IBM Business Partner) for each processor contained in the server machine on which any copy of the program is to run. PLUs are required for every server machine on which the program is installed. You are also required to obtain a corresponding number of additional PLUs if the program installation is moved to a server machine with a greater number of processors, or if any additional processors are added to the server machine on which the program is installed. Failure to comply with the requirement for the appropriate number of PLUs will invalidate the terms of this license. License Use Management software may be used to monitor compliance. For Software Maintenance renewals for deployments on servers of five processors and greater, and new software purchases for deployments on servers of five processors and greater, you are eligible for special bid on the software. Contact your IBM representative.
Also refer to the License Information supplied with your updated copy of the program.
TransferabilityUsers who upgrade from an earlier release of the program under Passport Advantage can use their existing capacity units and then acquire additional PLUs to satisfy the requirements given below. The capacity units from the previous release will be converted to PLUs (at a rate of two capacity units to one PLU) and counted as all or part of the customer entitlement. Any "spare" capacity units can be used towards other program entitlement at the time of renewal reconciliation, but are not refundable. Capacity units for WebSphere MQ will be withdrawn from marketing on May 5, 2003. Users should retain their original product and capacity units as Proof of Entitlement (PoE).
Note that the pricing is based on the number of processors in the server machine, regardless of
whether they are all used to execute the program.
MigrationExisting customers will receive updated media packs soon after the products become generally available under the new terms. Migration for customers who have existing capacity unit license entitlements will be at the time of Software Maintenance renewal. A standard conversion rate of two capacity units to one processor license unit will be used. In the majority of situations, this conversion will ensure that customers have sufficient entitlement. However, where machines have five or more processors (and in a few other cases), the standard conversion will not give the required number of entitlements. In this case, when contacted by IBM, you should discuss acquiring additional entitlements in order to be correctly licensed under the new pricing model. You will not be charged for additional entitlements granted under this process, but the Software Maintenance renewal will be amended, based on the number of entitlements needed. For Software Maintenance renewals for deployments on servers of five processors and greater, and new software purchases for deployments on servers of five processors and greater, you are eligible for special bid on the software. Notes
Extended Transactional ClientsWebSphere MQ introduces extended transactional clients, which allow a WebSphere MQ Client to operate as an XA resource manager. You can coordinate units of work with databases such as DB2 under the control of an external transaction coordinator. The extended transactional clients, which support C and JMS programming, are available on the following client platforms:
Although the extended transactional clients are not available on iSeries or z/OS, the WebSphere MQ V5.3 server platforms (except z/OS) support attachment of the extended transactional clients. The extended transactional clients do not support WebSphere MQ as a transaction manager; that is, the MQBEGIN verb is not supported. These clients operate as a resource manager, not as a transaction manager.
The extended transactional clients allow centralized system management and administration, which can
reduce operational costs and help you organize your networked resources in a more efficient way.
New SupportPacs for Microsoft .NET Support
These SupportPacs (MA7P and MA0R) enable reliable interoperation between .NET applications and other
applications or systems within or outside your enterprise. The classes can operate either directly
on a local WebSphere MQ server or, using a client connection, to a remote WebSphere MQ server.

Extended Transactional ClientsThe pricing structure of the extended transactional clients is equivalent to that of the WebSphere MQ server products. A server product and the extended transactional clients can be used concurrently on the same machine at no extra charge. The extended transactional clients are packaged as part of WebSphere MQ, V5.3. They are shipped with a new combined V5.3 media pack, where the clients are on a separate CD-ROM that is added to the existing server product set. Existing WebSphere MQ V5.3 customers can obtain the new function either via electronic software download (eSD) or by ordering a new media pack. New customers who want the extended transactional clients can purchase PLUs and the refreshed WebSphere MQ V5.3 media pack, or use eSD. The extended transactional clients are not available via SupportPac downloads. You can install the extended transactional clients and servers as permitted by your purchased entitlement. Use of the Extended Transactional Clients with WebSphere
Customer Responsibilities: You must provide the minimum hardware and software environments in which the licensed programs run. You must also identify the machines on which they will install WebSphere MQ. You or the program provider will identify the requirement for PLUs for the required use authorization. Before operating the system, confirm that you have sufficient use authorization to use the system. Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product. Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program, an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility.
Packaging:
Media is on CD-ROM only. It contains program code, PDF files of the publications for viewing
online, and HTML files for selected publications. This program, when downloaded from a Web site,
contains the applicable IBM license agreement, and License Information (LI), if appropriate, and
will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. The license and LI
