Description
Analysis and Design Facility
VisualAge Pacbase offers powerful information management capabilities to help capitalize and enrich
corporate AD know-how. It provides the flexibility that analysis and design teams want, and helps
achieve consistency and validity of specifications, reusability, and quality of information
throughout the AD life cycle.
Pacdesign is the VisualAge Pacbase analysis and design component for supporting a variety of
methodologies including YSM, Merise, SSADM, and OMT.
UML support is offered via the interface with XMI-based UML modeling tools, enabling modelers and
designers to take advantage of UML unified approach. Continuity is ensured along the development
process and teams benefit from consistency between UML and VisualAge Pacbase concepts. The
VisualAge Pacbase repository is directly fed with the data coming from the design phase, providing
developers with the basics of the implementation model. At construction time, developers reuse
objects defined at the upper level ensuring consistency with the software architecture design.
e-business Build Facility
VisualAge Pacbase offers extensive support for building e-business applications. It provides:
VisualAge Pacbase meets enterprise needs for openness, flexibility, and interoperability. Combining
VisualAge Pacbase with WebSphere Studio Application Developer, development teams produce e-business
applications that comply with Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) specifications. In addition,
VisualAge Pacbase remains open to third-party technologies and provides a COM/OCX facility to
address client development with a COM-compliant tool.
-
Model-Driven Development
VisualAge Pacbase offers a structured approach to development based on the use of an information
model. This information model is dedicated to e-business needs and integrated in the development
cycle. It offers a high level of expression that closely models business processes, gives clear
dispatching and structuring of the data necessary for development, and formalizes the description of
application components.
The VisualAge Pacbase information model helps to simplify development and increase productivity and
quality. Teams can focus on functional characteristics rather than technical issues. They leverage
a standard architecture to guide in the description of the future systems. They then benefit from
proven generation capabilities to automatically produce documented source code including COBOL
server components and Web services.
-
Generation and Deployment for Multiple Platforms
VisualAge Pacbase improves the flexibility of deployment due to independence from any specific
environment. COBOL backend servers and the code necessary to use standard middleware can be
generated for the following platforms:

Service Test Facility
VisualAge Pacbase offers a facility for testing the overall behavior of the server components
produced, independent from the development of the middle-tier logic and the presentation layer.
This tool is an excellent vehicle for productivity and reliability. It also ensures better role
integration among multibackground teams, and can be used by any of the development staff, whatever
their task and skills (COBOL server component, Java developers).
-
Web Services Development
VisualAge Pacbase enables you to develop Web services based on open, cross-platform standards: UDDI,
SOAP, and WSDL. It provides a top-down approach to define, model, and generate all components
needed for publication, test, and execution of Web services: Java, WSDL, XML schema, and
documentation. Developers can leverage and reuse information stored in the repository to increase
development productivity and consistency.
-
Integration with WebSphere Studio Application Developer
VisualAge Pacbase closely complements WebSphere Studio Application Developer, the J2EE environment
designed to produce the middle-tier Java application logic and the presentation layer of e-business
systems.
Consistency is achieved through the generation of a proxy object as a JavaBean or Enterprise
JavaBean component. This proxy object enables all developers to share a common set of services
while providing a clear division of responsibilities between developer profiles.
Generated from the VisualAge Pacbase repository, the proxy object provides developers in WebSphere
Studio Application Developer with the view of the server they need. It facilitates client
construction by enabling the direct access and use of data, services, and events available on the
server. It improves reliability by enabling automatic reuse of information defined in the VisualAge
Pacbase repository. It simplifies development by hiding complex mechanisms for exchange between
remote components.
Developers from WebSphere Studio Application Developer directly access the VisualAge Pacbase proxy
object. They also benefit from the service test facility in being able to visualize the behavior of
remote components and simplify their own tasks. VisualAge Pacbase proxy object may also be
completed using Eclipse JDEE.
-
Integration of Application Assets
VisualAge Pacbase enables organizations to reuse existing assets into new e-business applications
and offers various integration options. This flexible and pragmatic approach helps protect
investments with minimal outlay, while favoring the cultural growth of the company.
Existing business services, developed using traditional technology, can integrate into new
e-business systems and take benefit from the VisualAge Pacbase e-business model.
Traditional transactional applications, developed with VisualAge Pacbase, also integrate into new
e-business systems. VisualAge Pacbase offers specific generation functions to facilitate the
integration process.
-
Web Application Models
This module is included in the e-business offering and may be ordered separately.
Web Application Models
Reusing information coming from VisualAge Pacbase repository or relational databases, Web
Application Models generates presentation and navigation components based on application
models.
Traditional Build Facility:
VisualAge Pacbase provides genuine support for development and automates the production of
complete applications. It provides:
-
Model-driven development
-
A Developer workbench to cover the production process for batch transaction processing and reporting
as well as online applications
-
Repository-based management and reuse of components
The information model guides development and ensures automatic reuse of components. Application
structure is independent of technological constraints, which facilitates the adaptability of
applications.
VisualAge Pacbase automatically generates 100% of the source code, database descriptions, and
documentation (online and hard copy). Applications can run on a wide range of platforms, operating
systems, ThinkPad monitors, and databases including:

Management Facility
Using the VisualAge Pacbase central repository, organizations can capitalize on corporate AD
know-how, ensure data administration, and master management and maintenance of development projects.
The VisualAge Pacbase central repository offers an elaborate storage structure, including the
functions necessary for managing and controlling the information throughout the application life
cycle.
Its organization facilitates the sharing and reuse of information and allows several projects to be
managed in parallel. Powerful features allow the management of versions and cross-references of
information. This integrated environment facilitates increased developer productivity and quality
along the development, maintenance, and delivery of distributed applications components.
The VisualAge Pacbase repository can take advantage of third-party tools for complementary
configuration management functions such as source code management and software distribution,
simplifying the delivery process.
One of the main benefits of the VisualAge Pacbase repository becomes evident when application
evolution or maintenance is required. You can trace information at any time, enabling you to
perform powerful impact analysis when implementing changes. Existing customers report significant
productivity gains at maintenance time.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
VisualAge Pacbase V3.5 is capable as of December 20, 2002, when used in accordance with IBM's
associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly
interoperates with it.
