Description

CICS Transaction Server for Windows V5.0 is a member of the long-established CICS family of high-integrity transaction managers. It enables complex transaction management applications in a Web or networked client/server environment, and supports users' business critical processes. It handles interactions between workstation users and application programs in a way that ensures predictable, rapid, and reliable responses to user requests. It provides the capability to exploit the power of the workstation together with either local area or wide area networks, stand-alone or host-attached. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 may be used with CICS Transaction Gateway V4.0, or later, or CICS Universal Clients V3.1, or later. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is closely compatible with CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp V4.1, and is particularly intended for customers exploiting that product who wish to move to Microsoft Windows platforms.

The CICS family, including TXSeries™, supports a range of platforms from mainframes to workstations, with connectivity to transactions and data on all other CICS systems, and with support for common applications across these platforms. It enables transaction management workload to be shared across platforms, with multiple cooperating functions run close to the user, or on local, regional, or corporate servers, in solutions optimized to minimize network traffic. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is a scalable solution, offering opportunity for low-volume and low-cost solutions for start-up businesses, which may be scaled to higher volume by introducing more powerful processors or migrating to CICS on other platforms as business growth and needs dictate.

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 supports a CICS API equivalent to that of CICS/ESA® V4.1 (with limited exceptions principally in user journaling and full basic mapping support [BMS]). This feature makes the product particularly suitable as a platform for the development and testing of applications intended for use on mainframe CICS.

The master terminal transaction, CEMT, is provided, enabling Systems Administrators to use a command line interface for fast-path management of system tasks, transactions, and connected systems. It may be used to inquire on or set the status of system resources.

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is a 32-bit product, and supports 32-bit applications in C, C++, PL/I, and COBOL.

Support is provided for TCP/IP, APPC, and NetBIOS communication.

A full resource definition interface provides an Inquire and Set API to enable a user to add, delete, retrieve, browse, or modify large numbers of resource definitions in a batch mode. Resource definition online facilities are available using the CEDA transaction.

A Performance Analyzer is included. This is a statistics and monitoring tool, providing information on how CICS transactions and resources are being used in the system. This information may then help in making decisions on tuning the system for optimum performance. The primary uses of the Performance Analyzer are to:

  • Provide routine performance management information
  • Provide information that will assist in the resolution of performance issues
  • Provide a tool for capacity planning
  • Provide a high-level application trace
  • Provide a high-level application timing probe
  • Allow other remote CICS systems to interrogate the transaction statistics and user clock data held on the CICS TS for Windows V5.0 server

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 incorporates as its file manager Pervasive.SQL 2000i Server (at level SP4). Pervasive.SQL 2000i Server contains the Btrieve file manager, as used in CICS TS for OS/2 V4.1.

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 runs as a Windows service. This allows, for example, automatic starting, and the ability for the user to log off from the operating system while leaving CICS TS for Windows V5.0 running.

Installation of CICS TS for Windows V5.0 uses InstallShield Professional 6.3.

Four groups of samples are provided in CICS TS for Windows V5.0:

  • COBOL samples
  • PL/I samples
  • C and C++ samples
  • External interface samples (part of the local client)

Principal Functions Provided by CICS

  1. Interoperability

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 offers flexible intercommunication facilities, allowing it to be supported and configured across a variety of networks. Facilities equivalent to those of CICS TS for OS/2 V4.1 are provided. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 can also be used with IBM's WebSphere® MQ software.

    • Distributed Program Link allows a transaction to link to programs on a connected CICS system.
    • Transaction Routing allows a terminal user in one CICS system to run transactions in any connected CICS system.
    • Function Shipping allows application programs in one CICS system to access resources (such as files or queues) in another CICS system.
    • Distributed Transaction Processing allows communications between transactions running in different systems. The partner system need not be a CICS system.
    • Asynchronous Transaction Processing allows a CICS transaction to start a transaction in a remote CICS system and pass data to it. It is a form of function shipping request that is similar to Distributed Transaction Processing.
    • The External Call Interface (ECI) is available for use with CICS Transaction Gateway or CICS Universal Clients to enable a non-CICS application to call a CICS TS for Windows V5.0 program synchronously or asynchronously. The ECI offers a simple interface whereby non-CICS software may cooperate with CICS server applications, communicating via a communications area (COMMAREA).
    • The External Presentation Interface (EPI) is available to be used with the CICS Transaction Gateway or CICS Universal Clients to enable any Microsoft Windows application program to emulate a terminal while invoking a CICS transaction; the transaction can be an unaltered BMS transaction generating 3270 data streams.
    • WebSphere MQ supports the use of MQI in CICS applications, can participate in CICS syncpoint, and supports triggering of CICS applications.

  2. Data Management Functions

Interfaces within CICS TS for Windows V5.0 allow access to data held in databases, operating system data sets, and areas within CICS itself. The SQL interface is supported. The file control interface provides access to transactional record-level file systems.

CICS provides facilities for use by applications of transient data, which handles queues of data being sent to a device (such as a printer) and temporary storage.

During normal execution of a task, information is logged about all protected data (called recoverable resources) that is being changed, and if the transaction fails or is cancelled, updates to recoverable files will automatically reverse. This safeguards other tasks from the possibility of using corrupted data. Applications can specify intermediate synchronization points (sync points) at which data updates are logically complete.

  3. Presentation Management

Commercial applications characteristically use predefined screen presentations known as FORMS. These appear in Internet/Web-based applications, as well as in traditional terminal-oriented transactional and database applications.

CICS Basic Mapping Support (BMS) supports the design of form-based applications, allowing many device dependencies to be abstracted from the application code and specified in a separate Map Library. BMS maps may be used without change or recompilation across all members of the CICS family. The approach of generating maps at compilation time also ensures that good performance is achieved with any given device class. BMS maps and 3270 data streams can be used with Transaction Routing between CICS systems.

  4. Realtime Services

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 contains a number of control functions which supervise and control the allocation of resources within the system. These provide an interface to operating system functions which allows CICS to manage its workload in a manner optimized for transactional work. These functions are:

    • Task Control manages the status of all CICS tasks. Operating system processes can be allocated in an efficient way which does not require a separate process for each terminal or operator. Priorities may be assigned to transactions, operators, and devices with the sum of these priorities being used to determine the overall priority for a given task. Security checking is also provided to determine whether access for a user is to be allowed, employing either user authorization facilities, or the use of external security facilities via runtime user exits.
    • Program Control associates a task with the appropriate application program. Many tasks may use a shared copy of the program.
    • Storage Control acquires, controls, and frees dynamic storage used for programs, input/output areas, work areas, and so on.
    • Timer Services is a set of functions which allow applications to start and control a range of time-dependent actions, for example, starting a particular transaction at a certain time of day, or signaling when a specified period has elapsed.

  5. Application Development Services

Application programs for CICS TS for Windows V5.0 may be written in COBOL, C, C++, or PL/I, and incorporate CICS commands within the program to invoke the required CICS functions.

Facilities to assist in development of applications include:

    • A command language translator that preprocesses source code CICS commands into the form that the relevant language compiler requires. (PL/I does not have a translator but uses an integrated preprocessor.)
    • The Execution Diagnostic Facility to enable the programmer to test and debug application programs online.
    • A command-level interpreter for online syntax checking and optional command execution.
    • Extensive trace and formatted dump facilities, including auxiliary trace formatter, exception tracing, time stamp on trace entries, trace and dump output in binary, and system trap handling.
    • Multisession debug, which allows the user to run several simultaneous debug sessions.
    • Sympathetic Failure Notification (SFN) between client and server.

CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is an ideal platform for the development of applications targeted to run on mainframe CICS systems.

  6. Performance and Systems Management

CICS ensures optimum performance for transactional applications by incorporating numerous features designed for high-performance operation, effective management of workloads in uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems, and monitoring the performance of actual workloads under a variety of conditions. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 incorporates a high-performance record-oriented file system, an efficient transaction scheduling and dispatching mechanism, and a workload balancing systems which allows transactional workloads to be distributed over a pool of application server processes. This ensures that uniprocessor systems are fully exploited and allows transparent exploitation of symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems.

CICS systems are designed for long running execution with consistently high availability. Most systems administration activities can be performed online while CICS is running. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 includes a comprehensive facility for Resource Definition Online (RDO), allowing CICS resources such as files, queues, programs, and transaction definitions to be defined interactively. It also includes a Master Terminal facility allowing the status of these resources to be queried and varied.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Can be operated using only the keyboard
  • Does not require the user to make responses within time limits
  • Communicates all information independent of color
  • Supports interfaces commonly used by screen magnifiers
  • Does not flash the screen at rates that could induce epileptic seizures

Product Positioning
