For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: SE001). OverviewIBM CICS® Transaction Server (CICS TS) for Windows® V5.0 is an advanced transaction processing solution for the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT® platforms. This offering delivers a version of CICS that is compatible with the popular CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp® V4.1, providing those users with a migration path to Microsoft Windows platforms. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 can act as a robust, enterprise-wide coordinator and integrator of servers, managing high-performance applications and data sources in a branch office environment. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is derived from CICS TS for OS/2® V4.1, and has all its mature characteristics of reliability, availability, and data integrity. It provides a comprehensive CICS API on a codebase that is simple to install and is sparing in its use of resources, performing well in relatively small server machines. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 can be an ideal environment either for production or for development of CICS applications. Specific functions include:
DescriptionCICS Transaction Server for Windows V5.0 is a member of the long-established CICS family of high-integrity transaction managers. It enables complex transaction management applications in a Web or networked client/server environment, and supports users' business critical processes. It handles interactions between workstation users and application programs in a way that ensures predictable, rapid, and reliable responses to user requests. It provides the capability to exploit the power of the workstation together with either local area or wide area networks, stand-alone or host-attached. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 may be used with CICS Transaction Gateway V4.0, or later, or CICS Universal Clients V3.1, or later. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is closely compatible with CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp V4.1, and is particularly intended for customers exploiting that product who wish to move to Microsoft Windows platforms. The CICS family, including TXSeries, supports a range of platforms from mainframes to workstations, with connectivity to transactions and data on all other CICS systems, and with support for common applications across these platforms. It enables transaction management workload to be shared across platforms, with multiple cooperating functions run close to the user, or on local, regional, or corporate servers, in solutions optimized to minimize network traffic. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is a scalable solution, offering opportunity for low-volume and low-cost solutions for start-up businesses, which may be scaled to higher volume by introducing more powerful processors or migrating to CICS on other platforms as business growth and needs dictate. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 supports a CICS API equivalent to that of CICS/ESA® V4.1 (with limited exceptions principally in user journaling and full basic mapping support [BMS]). This feature makes the product particularly suitable as a platform for the development and testing of applications intended for use on mainframe CICS. The master terminal transaction, CEMT, is provided, enabling Systems Administrators to use a command line interface for fast-path management of system tasks, transactions, and connected systems. It may be used to inquire on or set the status of system resources. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is a 32-bit product, and supports 32-bit applications in C, C++, PL/I, and COBOL. Support is provided for TCP/IP, APPC, and NetBIOS communication. A full resource definition interface provides an Inquire and Set API to enable a user to add, delete, retrieve, browse, or modify large numbers of resource definitions in a batch mode. Resource definition online facilities are available using the CEDA transaction. A Performance Analyzer is included. This is a statistics and monitoring tool, providing information on how CICS transactions and resources are being used in the system. This information may then help in making decisions on tuning the system for optimum performance. The primary uses of the Performance Analyzer are to:
CICS TS for Windows V5.0 incorporates as its file manager Pervasive.SQL 2000i Server (at level SP4). Pervasive.SQL 2000i Server contains the Btrieve file manager, as used in CICS TS for OS/2 V4.1. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 runs as a Windows service. This allows, for example, automatic starting, and the ability for the user to log off from the operating system while leaving CICS TS for Windows V5.0 running. Installation of CICS TS for Windows V5.0 uses InstallShield Professional 6.3. Four groups of samples are provided in CICS TS for Windows V5.0:

Product PositioningCICS Transaction Server for Windows V5.0 is particularly suitable for meeting the continuing needs of customers who are exploiting transaction management systems based on CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp V4.1, but who wish to evolve their operating environment to Microsoft Windows. Applications may be migrated to CICS TS for Windows V5.0 essentially with no change. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 also offers a platform for the development of CICS applications that can be executed on any of the CICS server platforms, including z/OS and OS/390®, VSE/ESA, and the platforms supported by TXSeries. It supports a CICS API approximately equivalent to that in CICS/ESA Version 4.1. For new customers wishing to exploit advanced CICS-based transaction management on Microsoft Windows platforms, or to migrate existing systems from AIX®, Solaris, or HP-UX to Microsoft Windows, the recommended product is TXSeries Version 5. Based on mature and proven CICS technology, CICS TS for Windows V5.0 provides a truly robust and open platform on which to build applications which are scalable, easily portable to other IBM CICS environments, manageable from a single point of control, and interoperable across networks, maintaining integrity and dependability. It is an ideal product for providing decentralized transaction management, for example in a branch office environment. Note that, as previously announced, program services for CICS Transaction Server for OS/2 Warp V4.1 are scheduled to be discontinued on January 31, 2003. Reference InformationFor TXSeries Version 5, refer to Software Announcement 202-055 , dated March 12, 2002.

If hardcopy is required, the PDF file should be printed. Technical InformationSpecified Operating EnvironmentHardware RequirementsCICS TS for Windows V5.0 will run in all machines in which the operating systems run, provided they have sufficient memory and hard-file capacity.
The memory requirement for CICS TS for Windows V5.0 is dependent on its
use, in particular the number of concurrent tasks to be run, and the
requirements of the applications. Similarly the requirement for
hard-file depends on what is installed, including softcopy books.
Software RequirementsCICS TS for Windows V5.0 requires any of the following operating systems:
Note that it does not support the Windows Terminal Server or Windows Terminal Services Environments for either supported Microsoft Windows platform. They may be supported via the CICS Transaction Gateway. To support the command files (including sample command files) included in CICS TS for Windows V5.0, Object REXX for Windows must be installed. If Object REXX is not already installed, CICS TS for Windows V5.0 will install Object REXX Version 2.1. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 may be used with:
For NetBIOS communications, support is integrated within the Operating System. For APPC (LU6.2) communication with CICS Universal Clients and other CICS systems:
CICS TS for Windows V5.0 supports communication using TCP6.2, allowing SNA LU6.2 messages to be passed over a TCP/IP network. Support for TCP/IP communication is integrated within the Operating Systems. Compatibility: CICS TS for Windows V5.0 does not support PNA attachment of ASCII displays. CICS TS for Windows V5.0 does not support Telnet attached terminals. Note that some messages displayed by the product refer to it as "CICS for Windows." Limitations: The CICS Universal Client or CICS Transaction Gateway, at any level, cannot be installed in the same machine as CICS TS for Windows V5.0. This is because the CICS Universal Client V5 is incorporated in the product to provide the local client function.
CICS TS for Windows V5.0 cannot be installed on a machine that already
has Pervasive.SQL 2000i Server installed.
