Description

WebSphere Data Interchange facilities create deploy, execute, and manage data mapping between EDI formats, XML formats, and application data formats. They support the mandatory requirements for EDI trading partner exchanges such as auditing, and data content validation, as well as providing a depth of function — for example: trading partner profiles, enveloping, syntactic validation, and functional acknowledgement — that enables a highly optimized EDI information exchange.

The application data mapping converts from and into EDI standard and proprietary nonstandard formats including, but not limited to, ANSI X.12, UN/EDIFACT, and UCS. WebSphere Data Interchange supports the subsets of the published ANSI X.12 and UN/EDIFACT standards, as interpreted by industries such as retail, transportation, electronics, automotive, petroleum, healthcare, insurance, and manufacturing.

WebSphere Data Interchange is able to operate as a stand-alone EDI system or it can be integrated with other enterprise applications, either through its WebSphere MQ-based interface or through its own API.

In the context of a typical enterprise architecture, WebSphere Data Interchange fulfills the role of an EDI broker that performs the special EDI validation, transformation, and exchange functions and propagates the resulting transformed information either internally or externally.

Internal propagation of transformed information may be through a process broker such as IBM CrossWorlds InterChange Server, through a message broker such as IBM WebSphere MQ Integrator®, direct to the business applications, or by any combination of these, depending on the needs of the enterprise.

External propagation of transformed information or receipt of information can be through a specialized and dedicated Valuable Added Networks (VAN) gateway, an Internet gateway, directly to a trading partner, or through any combination of these, depending on the nature of the relationship that the enterprise holds with its partner community. WebSphere Data Interchange is sufficiently flexible in its configuration that it can interoperate with a wide range of such solutions. This is of particular advantage where an enterprise may already have an established VAN provider.

The primary enhancements to WebSphere Data Interchange for z/OS V3.2 are:

  • Any-to-any mapping — allows direct mapping from any supported source document (EDI, XML, or application data format) to any supported target format (EDI, XML, or application data format). This function allows users to create many new types of mapping combinations such as EDI to EDI, XML to EDI, and EDI to XML. This mapping enhancement is supported by an improved graphical representation of the XML data in the WebSphere Data Interchange Client tool.
  • Improved XML DTD import — enables direct DTD import from a file and the ability to display the DTD for mapping purposes in a similar way to the approach used by WebSphere Data Interchange for importing EDI-standard transactions. Allowing the import of user-defined DTD formats enables WebSphere Data Interchange to support whichever DTDs are relevant to the nature of the customer's business, whether the DTDs were obtained from an industry consortium, a trading partner, or created by users.
  • WebSphere MQ message queuing support — enables WebSphere Data Interchange to be driven by WebSphere MQ messages to give additional integration with WebSphere MQ Integrator by allowing it to control the operation of WebSphere Data Interchange and to cooperate in transforming EDI messages. This facility introduces a WebSphere MQ queue profile definition to associate logical destination names with real WebSphere MQ queues.
  • Industry-leading support for Healthcare standards HIPAA and HL7
    • Uniquely provides full translation of HL7 content that is imbedded in ANSI X12 documents. Future HIPAA requirements will probably mandate the ability to imbed an HL7 document in an ANSI X12 transaction. WebSphere Data Interchange adds support for binary data segments to address this need. In addition, WebSphere Data Interchange uniquely provides support for translation of the complex dynamic hierarchical ANSI X12 formats used to support the exchange of HL7 documents in ANSI X12 transactions such as Advance Ship Notice and Medical Claims, by recognizing the complex nature of the data and being able to sequence and switch mapping definitions to complete the translation.
    • Introduces advanced data validation and standards compliance function to provide industry-leading support for both HIPAA and other industry formats. Meeting the HIPAA legislative challenge requires the validation of exchanged content and the ability to generate ANSI standard functional acknowledgements in response to inconsistencies. WebSphere Data Interchange introduces full support for this capability by enabling the HIPAA testing definitions within validation maps and by providing for the association of these maps with parsing rules so that the testing validation can be applied only where required by the HIPAA Standards Implementation Guides.
  • Advanced conditional and special mapping function — can be exploited in mapping scenarios to address the most complex needs of standards translation. Examples of this capability are the ability to call translation maps in a hierarchical manner, conditionally switch between translation maps, sequential chaining of translation maps, and support for hierarchical looping over data content structures.
  • Other functional enhancements to the translation engine extend to a new C and C++ user exit interface and target-based mapping.

Value Unit-Based Pricing: Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve which provides for a lower price per millions of service units per hour (MSU) for larger capacities.

There is also be a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, for example, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.

Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.

International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and Support Considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product Positioning

WebSphere Data Interchange V3.2 provides advanced translation, validation, and batched information exchange capabilities for EDI standards.

WebSphere Data Interchange electronically translates EDI format data, such as invoices, purchase orders, and billing forms for exchange with trading partners. It supports industry implementations of the ANSI X12, EDIFACT, VICS, UCS, and RAIL standards. Translation can take place between any combination of EDI, XML, or structured application data format.

WebSphere Data Interchange provides advanced data validation and standards compliance functions that allow the functional acknowledgements, defined by some standards, to be generated in response to inconsistencies in the data content. WebSphere Data Interchange can be configured to both construct and deconstruct envelopes of EDI format data that contain batches of related EDI items such as invoices or purchase orders.

WebSphere Data Interchange provides a dedicated GUI mapping tool, the WebSphere Data Interchange Client, that is optimized to build EDI, XML, and application data format transformations. The WebSphere Data Interchange Client allows direct import of EDI standards definitions, application data structures, and industry-standard or user-defined XML DTDs for mapping and translation. The WebSphere Data Interchange Client provides configuration and administration capabilities that allow the definition of the construction and deconstruction of envelopes.

WebSphere Data Interchange supports integration with WebSphere MQ, enabling interoperation with a wide range of enterprise applications, business process engines (such as the IBM Crossworlds InterChange Server), information brokers (such as WebSphere MQ Integrator), and ERP systems (such as SAP R3).

WebSphere Data Interchange provides for communication with trading partners via both VANs or Internet B2B gateways by providing an easy-to-use, configurable interface that enables connection to leading VAN and Internet gateways. The WebSphere Business Connection offerings that provide AS1 and AS2 support and the IBM e-business Hosting™ Expedite VAN gateway are two examples of supported gateways from IBM.

In the context of a typical enterprise architecture, WebSphere Data Interchange fulfills the role of an EDI Broker that performs the specialist EDI validation, transformation, and exchange functions and propagates the resulting transformed information either internally or externally. Internal propagation of transformed information may be via a message broker, a process broker, direct to the business applications, or by any combination of these, depending on the needs of enterprise. External propagation of transformed information or receipt of information may be via a specialized dedicated VAN gateway, an Internet B2B gateway, directly to a trading partner, or by any combination of these interfaces, depending on the nature of the trading relationship that the enterprise holds with its trading partners.

A description of the capabilities of WebSphere Data Interchange can be found at:

The WebSphere MQ family provides a versatile platform for e-business.

  • WebSphere MQ , the core of the WebSphere MQ family, integrates over 35 platforms and:
    • Provides base messaging functions for servers and clients
    • Assures once-only message delivery
    • Can be used alone or with other members of the family
  • WebSphere MQ Adapter Offering is the framework and tools needed to build and customize MQSeries® adapters for existing, new, prepackaged, or custom-developed applications.
  • WebSphere MQ Everyplace™ brings the benefits of assured message delivery and rock-solid security to the failure-prone environment of mobile working.
  • WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker , a powerful information broker, includes a one-to-many connectivity model plus transformation, intelligent routing, and information flow modelling across multiple, disparate business systems.
  • WebSphere MQ Event Broker provides an entry point with lower cost, yet optimizes performance for a subset of function.
  • MQSeries Workflow , a business process management system, enables the definition, execution, and swift change of complete business processes that span systems, applications, and people.

In addition, product extensions provide additional supported function available as a download from the Internet. Product extensions that introduce the ability to parse EDI data format content are available for some elements of the WebSphere MQ family. Such extensions provide the opportunity for bespoke transformation support for the most common EDI Standards to be constructed to enable the WebSphere MQ family to coexist with an incumbent third party EDI engine. Typically, such solutions using a WebSphere MQ family product extension do not extend to the EDI Standards validation, functional acknowledgement, and envelop construction and deconstruction provided by WebSphere Data Interchange.

WebSphere Business Integration is a family of cross-industry and industry-vertical offerings that provides a full range of capabilities to address common business goals such as reducing costs, improving operational performance, and increasing organizational agility. The WebSphere Business Integration offerings comprise industry-leading components, including industry-specific collaborations that represent the common practices and benchmark performance of many industry verticals. Such industry offerings often have the requirement to support the prevalent EDI standard grammar within that industry; in some industries, a specific optimized solution for that grammar is required. However, where an industry has adopted an implementation within an International Standard, such as ANSI X12 or EDIFACT, WebSphere Data Interchange is packaged as a component of the WebSphere Business Integration offering for that industry.

Value Units and Program Charges: The charge units used for this product are based on value units, depending on the MSU level of the server on which the program is installed. The number of MSUs per machine type/model is published by IBM and can be viewed online at:

To calculate the number of Value Units, the total MSUs are subdivided into one or more tiers. For each tier, the value units are calculated by multiplying the MSU tier value by a adjustment factor and the resulting numbers are then added together to provide the total Value Units. Refer to the example shown in the Ordering Information section.

The program includes a client, which must be used on an Intel®-based machine.

Note: Intel machines include compatible processors such as Cyrix and AMD. No separate server authorizations are required to license any other component part of the media package.

Value Unit Transferability: Value Units purchased under this announcement are intended to be used on z/OS or OS/390 only. Capacity Units purchased to use versions of this program for use with operating systems other than z/OS are transferable for use on the z/OS operating system, but only with the prior written agreement of IBM, which may be granted subject to the payment of additional license charges.

Licenses granted under the IPLA can be transferred from one machine to another within (but not limited to) an enterprise. Sysplex licensed users may aggregate the "capacity for all the processors" on which the program is operated to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single PoE document. It is the licensed user's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units so as not to exceed the applicable entitlement limits under the user's current license to use the program.

Subscription and Support: Subscription and Support must be specified using the same quantity of value units as the Program License entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Software Maintenance Applies: No

For Operating System software, the revised IBM Operational Support Services — Support Line offering will provide support for those operating systems and associated products that are not available with the newly announced Software Maintenance offering.
