DB2 Connect V8 continues the tradition of providing function-rich and robust access to DB2 servers running on System/390® and zSeries mainframes and iSeries systems. Also supported are Informix servers. In addition to connecting to DB2 servers, DB2 Connect also integrates data from non-relational mainframe systems such as VSAM, IMS, CICS, MQSeries, and other data sources that can be accessed from DB2 for OS/390 stored procedures. When used with IBM's extended federated capabilities, customers also gain access to Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server databases.

V8 of DB2 Connect enhances solutions in the areas of manageability, performance and scalability, availability, and application development.

Manageability

With V8, DB2 Connect introduces two new features to help you monitor the health of your DB2 Connect servers: the Health Monitor and the Health Center. These tools add a management-by-exception capability to DB2 Connect V8 servers by alerting you to potential system health issues. This enables you to address issues before they become real problems that affect your system performance.

Also new in DB2 Connect V8 is enhanced DB2 Control Center with enhanced functions that allow DB2 for OS/390 administrators to copy an entire DB2 subsystem, select and apply operations to multiple table objects within the same tablespace, parallelize execution of utilities, work with DB2 unload utility, and perform tasks in batch jobs by generating and customizing JCL.

DB2 Connect V8 also delivers cross-loader, Replication Center, and IMS Control Center to simplify cross-system data movement and IMS system administration.

Availability

DB2 Connect V7 servers introduced Connection Concentrator function. Connection Concentrator, in addition to enhancing DB2 for OS/390 scalability, also provides unique support for highly available solutions for customers running their DB2 for OS/390 systems in data-sharing environments. When connection concentrator is enabled, DB2 Connect servers detect failed DB2 for OS/390 subsystem (using information provided by OS/390 Work Load Manager) and transparently route transactions to members of the data-sharing group that are available to process transactions. This routing around failed members is transparent to the application. The only exception is a case when a DB2 subsystem failed while executing a transaction. In this instance, the application programmer needs to reestablish a database connection. V8 of DB2 Connect does not require programmers to reconnect. Instead, programmers need to simply resubmit their transaction and it will be redirected to an available DB2 subsystem.

Performance and Scalability

DB2 Connect V8 implements new client architecture that improves performance and scalability. The new architecture minimizes the number of times data is transferred in memory before it is passed to an application. In many cases, only a single memory transfer will occur between the application and the network layer. This results in improved resource utilization, higher scalability, and better performance. The new client architecture also shortens the code path between the network layer and the drivers that implement supported APIs. V8 implements a new memory management scheme that reduces resource contention and results in greater scalability in demanding environments such as Web application servers (for example, WebSphere).

DB2 Connect V8 is offered in 32- and 64-bit versions. The 64-bit support allows for better exploitation of modern server hardware and operating environments to handle the most demanding application workloads.

V8 API drivers (OLE DB, ODBC, CLI, JDBC, SQLj) have undergone significant re-architecture with specific focus on performance.

Application Development

V8 of DB2 Connect improves application development in three areas:

  1. Improved drivers for popular APIs
  2. Enhanced function and ease of building DB2 server side objects (stored procedures, functions, and triggers) and improved integration with popular development environments
  3. Support for Web services

Programmers using popular Microsoft programming interfaces such as ADO will find that the new OLE DB Provider and the ODBC driver offer new functions as well as significant performance improvements. Java programmers will appreciate improved speed and functionality of the J2EE certified JDBC driver and the improved SQLj support. UNIX®, Linux, and Windows® C and C++ programmers benefit from enhancements in the DB2 CLI and ODBC drivers.

New to DB2 Connect V8 is the Development Center, an integrated environment for building, testing, debugging, and deploying stored procedures, user-defined functions and triggers on various DB2 servers including DB2 for OS/390 and DB2 for iSeries. In addition to providing a complete stand-alone IDE, Development Center functions are also available as a collection of plug-ins for WebSphere and add-ins for Microsoft VisualStudio products including VisualBasic, Visual C++, and Visual InterDev. These plug-ins and add-ins allow programmers to complete all of their development tasks without leaving the comfort of their preferred IDE.

Web Services has emerged as the new promising technology for building applications from discrete components as well as integrating dissimilar applications and systems on an intranet and the Internet. DB2 Connect allows application programmers to present DB2 objects such as stored procedures and even SQL statements as full-fledged standard Web services without making any changes to mainframe and iSeries applications. For example, using facilities provided by DB2 Connect server, application programmer can quickly create a standard Web service from an existing stored procedure on DB2 for OS/390. The resulting Web service will have complete WSDL and can be registered in a UDDI registry.

DB2 Connect Application Server Edition is a new product offering in V8. Just like DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, this product is a combination of a connectivity server and application enabling components such as drivers for JDBC, ODBC, DB2 CLI, OLE DB, SQLj, and Embedded SQL APIs. Designed specifically to deliver connectivity to mainframe and minicomputer databases to Web and application servers, this product offers all of the same function as the DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition but with licensing terms and conditions that are designed to address specific needs of applications that use Web technologies and application servers. DB2 Connect Application Server Edition provides flexibility of deployment on a separate stand-alone connectivity server or collocating DB2 Connect and application server on the same server machine without any implications to software licensing charges.

Product positioning

DB2 Connect Personal Edition: DB2 Connect Personal Edition provides the application programming interface (API) drivers and connectivity infrastructure to enable direct connectivity from Windows and Linux desktop applications to mainframe and iSeries database servers. This product is specifically designed and is licensed for enabling two-tier client-server applications running on individual workstations and as such is not appropriate for use on servers.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition: DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is a combination of DB2 Connect server and DB2 client software designed to address the needs of organizations that require robust connectivity from a variety of desktop systems to mainframe and iSeries database servers. DB2 client software is deployed on desktop systems and provides API drivers that connect client-server applications running on these desktop systems to a DB2 Connect server. Designed to provide connectivity for client-server applications in large scale demanding environments, DB2 Connect server provides connection pooling and connection concentrator functions to maximize application availability while minimizing mainframe resource usage. DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition licensing terms are geared towards addressing the needs of two-tier client-server applications. License charges for the DB2 Connect Enterprise Server Edition product are based on the number of users of the product. Two types of licensing users are provided: concurrent users and registered users.

DB2 Connect Application Server Edition: DB2 Connect Application Server Edition product is identical to the DB2 Connect Enterprise Server in its technology. Just like the DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition it is designed for large scale demanding environments. However, its licensing terms and conditions are meant to address specific needs of multitier client-server applications as well as applications that utilize Web technologies. DB2 Connect Application Server Edition license charges are based on the size of the number of processors available to the application servers where the application is running. License charges are not affected by the number of users of the application, size of the DB2 Connect server itself, or the size of the mainframe database server.

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition: DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition product is ideal for organizations with extensive usage of DB2 Connect, especially where multiple applications are involved. This product provides program code of the DB2 Connect Personal Edition as well as program code identical to the DB2 Connect Application Server Edition for unlimited deployment throughout an organization. DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition license fees are based on the size of the mainframe database server (measured in MSUs) and are not affected by either the number of users nor the number of processors available to the application servers. This makes DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition an ideal choice for organizations where multiple applications are utilizing DB2 Connect or organizations with a mix of two-tier, multitier client-server, Web-based applications.

Metric Descriptions

  • Installs and Server Install: Each installation of the program must have a separate entitlement.
  • User: When obtaining a license for DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition users can be counted as either concurrent user or registered user. Each person, or user, making a connection to a host computer system must have a separate entitlement. When concentrating software is used, the users of that concentration software must each be counted as users.
    • Concurrent User

A concurrent user is a person, application, or device that has established one or more connections to one or more databases through a DB2 Connect server. A user with multiple connections to a single DB2 Connect server counts as only one concurrent user of the DB2 Connect server. Persons using applications that connect to a DB2 Connect server through other products that act as connection concentrators must be counted as DB2 Connect users and are subject to use-based charges. Persons using applications based on Web technologies (intranet or Internet) cannot be licensed as concurrent users. In such cases, each potential application user must be licensed as a registered user or either DB2 Connect Application Server Edition or DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition products should be used.

    • Registered User

A registered user is a person, application, or device entitled to establish one or more connections to any authorized DB2 Connect server in the customer's enterprise, either directly or through a multiplexing program, application server, or Web server.

    • Host Server Install

A host server license must be obtained for each independent mainframe database server being accessed with DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition. If the server is part of a sysplex (a cluster of System/390® or zSeries servers), only one host server entitlement is required for all mainframe servers that are a part of the sysplex. When multiple independent mainframe servers, or multiple sysplexes are used, one host server license must be obtained for each mainframe server or sysplex.

    • MSUs

An MSU entitlement must be obtained for each MSU on the DB2 host system

    • Per Processor

This description applies to processors attached to application servers.

A processor license must be obtained for each processors attached or available to these web servers or application servers. Charges are not based on the number of servers or processors attached or available to the program itself.

Licensing Information

DB2 Connect is made available as four separate products:

  • DB2 Connect Personal Edition,
  • DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition,
  • DB2 Connect Application Server Edition, and
  • DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition.

DB2 Connect Personal Edition is licensed for use by one user on a single workstation, for connection to any number of mainframe and minicomputer database servers. DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is available with the Standard Server/User Model licensing option. DB2 Connect Application Server Edition license charges are based on the number of processors used by the Web servers or application servers that are connecting to the DB2 Connect. DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition is an Unlimited Usage model based on the Millions of Service Units (MSU) per hour entitlements of the DB2 Universal Database for z/OS™ or OS/390, or DB2 Server for VSE and VM Server that you will be connecting to.

Customers are responsible for determining their license requirements with the DB2 product family. Use the following information to assist you in determining which of the different methods of entitlement are best for you.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Personal Edition: DB2 Connect Personal Edition is licensed for installation and use by an individual user at a single workstation.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition: DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is licensed as a combination of DB2 Connect Server install entitlements and User entitlements.

Under this entitlement option, DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition licenses include entitlement for one concurrent or registered user. Customers should plan on which of the two counting methods should be applied to the DB2 server products based on usage requirements and then obtain additional user entitlements to the extent required.

Additional user entitlements must be obtained under only one of the following terms:

  • Concurrent User licensing is based on the capacity of the DB2 Connect server, where capacity is defined in terms of the maximum number of persons using the server at the same time.
  • Registered User licensing requires each person who is a potential user of one or more DB2 Connect servers be licensed to use the DB2 Connect servers.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Application Server Edition: DB2 Connect Application Server Edition is licensed based on the number of processors available to Web or application servers that use DB2 Connect to access mainframe and minicomputer data. DB2 Connect Application Server Edition license charges are not based on the number of processors available to DB2 Connect itself. For example, DB2 Connect Application Server Edition license charges are the same regardless of whether DB2 Connect is located on the same server as the application server or installed on a separate server.

Licensing of DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition: Licensing and charges are not based on the number of users but on the MSU per hour entitlements of the DB2 Universal Database for z/OS or OS/390, or DB2 Server for VSE and VM Server that you will be connecting to.

With this product, two separate licenses must be ordered. One is the z/OS, OS/390, or DB2 server for VSE and VM Server host server entitlement, and the other is the appropriate number of MSU entitlements.

DB2 Connect Unlimited Use-based charges apply to any single server that users will be connecting to. Where the mainframe system is part of a sysplex, MSUs are based on the DB2 Universal Database for z/OS or OS/390 entitlements of the entire sysplex.

Licensing DB2 Connect for Linux on S/390 and zSeries: Licensing for DB2 on Linux/390 is consistent with the corresponding workstation platform products as follows:

  • DB2 Connect Unlimited — per Host Server, per MSU
  • DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition — per Server Install, per user
  • DB2 Connect Application Server Edition — per processor, based on processors attached to Application Servers

Note: Where a customer is running their Application Server on Linux/390, licensing for Application Server Edition will be based on the processors (equivalent to engine on the 390/zSeries) attached to the Application Server as follows:

  • Mode of executing Linux applications where we will price to a subset of engines:

Where customer has purchased additional processor capacity under the Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL), and is running the Application Server under the IFL, the attached processors will be on the number of IFL engines where the Application Server runs.

  • Modes of executing Linux applications where we will charge for all engines:
    • Running Linux natively
    • Running Linux under VM
    • Running Linux within a S/390 logical partition (LPAR) without IFL for Linux

Installation Entitlements: For DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, customers must purchase an installation entitlement for each server installation. Server installations are not restricted under the DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition or the DB2 Connect Application Server Edition usage model.

For DB2 Connect Application Server Edition, customers much purchase a processor entitlement for each processor on the application server that uses DB2 Connect to access mainframe or minicomputer data.

In addition, either of the following DB2 Connect Use-based Charges for defined users applies to any single server installation of the DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition product:

  • Registered Users
  • Users Logged On/Concurrent Users

Use-based Charges for Users Logged On are not applicable when connections to the DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition product are made through the Web-based applications (Internet or intranet). When using DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition to support applications that use Web-based technologies and rely on connections made from Internet or intranet, use-based charges must be based on the number of registered users. If determining the number of registering users is not possible or not practical, DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition or DB2 Connect Application Server Edition product should be used as it provides Unlimited User/Web access option.

DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for Unlimited Usage: This product provides customers with media and license to deploy either DB2 Connect Personal Edition code or DB2 Connect server code. When you order the DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition, you are shipped the full set of DB2 Connect code.

In addition, licensing and charges are not based on the number of users but on the MSU per Hour entitlements of the DB2 Universal Database for z/OS or OS/390, or DB2 Server for VSE and VM Server that you will be connecting to.

DB2 Connect Unlimited Use-based charges apply to any single server that users will be connecting to. Where the host system is part of a sysplex, MSUs are based on the DB2 Universal Database for z/OS or OS/390 entitlements of the entire sysplex.

Special Licensing Considerations: For DB2 Connect Personal Edition V8.1, you must acquire one license for each installation. If the total number of workstation installations exceeds the number of licenses, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition: For customers using DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, user access on connections made from Internet or intranet must be based on the number of registered users. If determining the number of registering users is not possible, then:

  • Each Web or application server can be licensed by purchasing DB2 Connect Application Server Edition.
    or
  • Unlimited Web and user access is available by purchasing DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition.

Connections made to DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition through other products that act as connection concentrators must be counted as DB2 Connect users and are subject to use-based charges based on the number of registered users or numbers of users connected.

Charges for DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition V8.1 are based on the number of users, either concurrent or registered. You must count all users the same way, but it is your decision whether to count your users as concurrent users or registered users. In either case, you must acquire one authorization for each user. The total number of users cannot exceed the number authorized by the applicable PoE. If the total number exceeds the quantity in the PoE, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA. As an alternative to user counting, IBM introduced an MSU model, which allows unlimited user access, as long as the host machine is fully entitled for its processing capacity.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition V8.1 is not restricted by the number of processors on the server machine.

For DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition V8.1: The total capacity of the DB2 Universal Database for DB2 for z/OS and OS/390 or DB2 Server for VSE and VM system attached or available may not exceed the total number authorized by the applicable PoE or authorized by each product authorization acquired under Passport Advantage. If the total number exceeds the quantity in your PoEs or exceeds your product authorizations acquired under Passport Advantage, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition

In Idle Standby or Active Standby, you must acquire correct number of server installs and the correct number of user entitlements:

  • In Idle Standby, you must license the program for one server install. No additional user entitlements need to be acquired in the idle standby server.
  • In Active Standby, you must license the program in the active standby server for one server install and the number of users accessing the server before the failover.
DB2 Connect Application Server Edition

If Web or application servers using the program are configured for Idle Standby or Active Standby, you must acquire correct number of processor licenses:

  • In Idle Standby Web or application server, you must license the program for one processor.
  • In Active Standby Web or application server, you must license the program for the number of processors attached or available to the standby.

Licensing Limitations and Restrictions: DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition V8.1 Concurrent User licensing Restrictions Use-based Charges for Users Logged On/Concurrent Users are not applicable when connections to this product are made through the Internet or intranet. When using this product to support applications that use Web-based technologies and rely on connections made from Internet or intranet, use-based charges must be based on the number of registered users. If determining the number of registered users is not possible or not practical, DB2 Connect Application Server Edition product should be used.
