Description

DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data enables knowledge workers to identify and extract high-value business intelligence and communicate results to business users for further analysis and decision making. DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data is an integrated solution for the sophisticated analysis of large amounts of enterprise data.

From its initial release, the Intelligent Miner has embodied proven data mining technology with best-of-breed salability and has been deployed in a variety of customer mining solutions. V2 enhancements included additional salability options and placed significant emphasis on usability and productivity for data mining analysts. While V6.1 offered further enhancements in core capabilities, a new area of emphasis supported the emerging maturation of data mining in Intelligent Miner customer installations.

V8.1 Objectives: DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data V8.1 offers new analysis, data exploration, and salability options that enhance core data mining capability. In addition, V8.1 places increased focus on bringing the value of data mining to more business intelligence users by broadening access to mining function and results at the business analyst's desktop. Enhancements include integration with business intelligence tools, and improved communication of data mining results to business analysts. Integrated business intelligence solutions leverage product enhancements to deliver custom mining solutions to business analysts.

Enhancements Targeted to the Business Analyst: New powerful visualizers for Associations, Tree Classification, and Demographic Clustering are provided for interpreting the mining results created by the respective algorithms. Actually comprised of a linked set of textual and graphical representations, the new visualizer is aimed at facilitating business communications.

Enablement features of the DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data provide the mechanisms for integration of business intelligence tools at the glass. Applying model results to the database enriches the information available to business analysts through familiar business intelligence tools they use every day. Seamless tool integration at the glass facilitates the iterative analysis process. The first tools targeted for integration will offer additional statistical analysis and data exploration options to analysts.

The DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data is based on a client/server architecture and mines data directly from DB2 as well as from other data sources via DB2 Relational Connect. Data and metadata can also be exchanged with warehouses and business intelligence tools and applications. Intelligent Miner for Data executes in either serial or parallel mode on Windows NT®, Windows® 2000, Windows XP, AIX®, and Sun Solaris servers. Clients run on Windows and AIX.

Enhanced Intelligent Miner Solutions

SAP Business Warehouse: Joint SAP and IBM technology pilots are underway to enable SAP users to utilize Intelligent Miner to mine data sourced from their SAP Business Warehouse. Generated models are applied and ported back to the warehouse. As both data and metadata are imported and exported, users will be able to define data once.

Product Positioning

DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data products provide a wide range of industrial-strength mining technologies within an integrated tool suite to support sophisticated data mining and application services to develop customized mining applications. The Intelligent Miner enables you to harvest valuable information from enterprise data sources and present that information to business users for analysis and decision making.

IBM is leading the way in helping users identify and extract high-value business intelligence from their data assets. Providing a new level of competitiveness and strategic decision-making power, this "mining" process is one of knowledge discovery and identifying hidden relationships, new trends, and previously undetected patterns hidden within a data store. Business managers, financial and fraud analysts, marketing managers, and a host of business decision makers are now better equipped to make more intuitive yet strategic decisions that ultimately affect a business' bottom line. Whether the problem is how to improve customer satisfaction, improve profitability, or reduce the risk of fraud abuse, the solution is the same — data mining using the Intelligent Miner.

The Intelligent Miner features powerful mining algorithms supported by data processing, statistical analysis, and visualization facilities that enable analysts to discover patterns in enterprise data which would otherwise be unobserved. The Intelligent Miner algorithms enable analyses ranging from classification and predictive modeling, to association discovery, sequential pattern discovery, and clustering.

For example, using a classification algorithm, a financial services company may be able to detect fraudulent usage of credit cards by examining deviations in the card usage patterns of its customers. Using predictive modeling, a retailer is able to forecast changes in customer buying patterns and compare purchases over the Internet or through mail order with in-store purchases.

Using Association Discovery, a supermarket chain can determine which products are most frequently sold in conjunction with other products and stock those items in proximity to maximize sales opportunities. An insurance company can use customer segmentation data to create target marketing campaigns or cross-sell services among existing customers. Medical researchers can use Sequential Pattern analyses to identify patterns of common symptoms that lead to particular illnesses.

The Intelligent Miner plays a central role in IBM's Business Intelligence Solution strategy.

DB2 OLAP Server™: The IBM DB2 OLAP Server is an online analytical processing (OLAP) server designed for a wide range of multidimensional planning, analysis, and reporting applications. DB2 OLAP Server integrates the powerful Essbase OLAP engine and application programming interfaces developed by Hyperion with the IBM DB2 family of relational databases. The relational storage interface enables DB2 OLAP Server to store data directly into DB2 and other relational databases.

OLAP offerings have gained increased importance with the advent of data warehouses and advanced analytics. They allow users to query and analyze data to verify business hypotheses. Discovery driven mining tools extend the analysts' capabilities by enabling them to scan massive amounts of information and quickly determine associations, patterns, and trends which would previously have eluded them. The two approaches are complementary. Traditional and advanced decision support continue to play a critical role in understanding, visualizing, and drilling-down to the detail required. Mining results may help users determine the dimensions and/or content of a multidimensional data store.

DB2 Universal Database® (UDB): Mining operations can be performed directly against DB2 data. Parallel DB2 processing is also supported and can be leveraged in conjunction with paralleled versions of the mining algorithms for large-scale mining runs.

DB2 Relational Connect: IBM DB2 DataJoiner® is the heterogeneous database solution for accessing data — IBM or non-IBM, relational or non-relational, local or remote — as if it were one database. Intelligent Miner users have the option of mining data stored in a variety of data sources accessible by DB2 DataJoiner, for example, Oracle, Informix™, and Sybase.

Mining Applications: Industry-specific mining application offerings leverage the benefits of mining by elevating access and analysis of mining results to be easily understood and applied by targeted business users or operational applications. Applications have been developed by IBM, customers, and IBM Business Partners and are becoming a primary vehicle for bringing the value of mining to the business community.

IBM Consulting and Services: IBM Data Mining Consultants, recognized in the industry as among the best, have deployed IBM mining technology in customer mining situations worldwide, including customized applications to fit industry and customer requirements. IBM Consulting Practices are organized to bring industry, data and text mining, as well as warehouse and database skills to bear on business problems, such as customer relationship management, marketing, and fraud and abuse management. Resources are available to support all phases of a mining solution implementation, from conception through deployment.

IBM Partnership Programs: Partnership programs provide assistance and technical support to non-IBM independent software vendors (ISVs), system integrators (SIs), and value-added resellers (VARs) to develop and market data mining offerings which leverage Intelligent Miner technology.
