Description

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 is a Java SDK that contains a reengineered Java 2 virtual machine at the SDK 1.4 level and the IBM JIT compiler. The program is a key building block for developing e-business applications. SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 passes the Java SDK 1.4 compatibility test and provides the stability, service, and scalability you expect from a zSeries program.

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 provides:

  • Java 2 APIs at the SDK 1.4 level
  • Continuation of the "write once, run anywhere" Java paradigm
  • New Java 2 function, including XML
  • Exploitation of enhanced z/OS linkage capabilities (XPLINK)
  • Enhanced IBM JIT compiler
  • JRIO
  • Security services
  • IBM enhanced memory management
  • Persistent reusable Java Virtual Machine (JVM) Support
  • Additional RAS enhancements

RAS

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 includes improved dump capability, tracing, and problem determination, and also isolation to better diagnose and fix software defects.

Persistent Reusable Java Virtual Machines

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 includes enhancements which allow execution in a persistent reusable mode. These enhancements to JVM technologies address the specific high-performance capabilities of short-lived, fast transactional applications. The overhead in initializing and terminating these types of applications implemented in Java should be substantially reduced, storage management more efficiently implemented, and transactions physically isolated from one another.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 is capable, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Product Positioning

Java can be used for developing traditional zSeries commercial applications as well as Internet and intranet applications that use standard interfaces.

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 benefits application developers who want to take advantage of the Java APIs for z/OS, write or run applications across multiple platforms, or use Java to access zSeries data. zSeries administrators can provide the SDK for their application developers and users. Building on the existing OS/390® Java product, companies can continue their deployment of Java with the benefits of zSeries quality, scalability, and service.

Compatibility: Most Java applications executed on Java for OS/390® (5655-D35) should run on SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 unchanged provided they did not use deprecated Java 2 SDK 1.3 APIs. Additionally, in some cases because of some small number of incompatibilities introduced industry-wide between Java 2 SDK 1.3 and SDK 1.4 APIs, some applications may have to change.

SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 takes advantage of enhanced z/OS linkage capabilities (XPLINK.) Any code that creates a JVM and interacts with the JVM via Java Native Interface or any other "call" interface must create the Language Environment® (LE) enclave specifying that LE should setup an XPLINK environment. This can be done in a variety of ways including setting a run-time option or recompiling the application code to be XPLINK.

For details on incompatibilities, visit:

Limitations: Input Method Framework (IMF) is not supported.

Performance Considerations: SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 is expected to perform, in general, as well as or better than the SDK 1.3 level of IBM Developer Kit for OS/390.
