For more information on Internet downloads, visit the XML site at: DescriptionXML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 is designed to improve the speed of deployment and help reduce the complexities of information exchange within business integration. This software is provided, at no additional charge, to customers who have a license for OS/390 V2.8 (5647-A01), or later; z/OS V1.1 (5694-A01), or later; or z/OS.e V1.3 (5655-G52), or later. It provides the base infrastructure to integrate vertical/industry-specific data formats, structures, schemas, and metadata to enable industry compliance of data representation and content. It also may help to provide the lowest total cost of ownership by capitalizing on the existing z/OS infrastructure. XML can also facilitate information exchange after mergers and acquisitions. Most companies decide to merge or dissolve a merger based on two factors: culture and information exchange. Companies who embrace XML may be better suited to integrate their information. This will help determine if the acquisition can be integrated and streamlined into the acquirer's environment, producing a quicker and stronger synergy of business processes within both companies' value network. XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 is designed to be compatible with IBM and non-IBM hardware and software platforms. Key uses include:
What's New in V1.4 While XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.4 is primarily an update of the previous toolkit, this release contains the following enhancements. Parsers The XML parsers for Java and C++ are based on cross-platform, open-source code that is designed to be compliant with industry standards. This release corresponds to the Apache Software Foundation's Xerces-J 2.0.1 (unmodified for z/OS and OS/390) and Xerces-C 1.6.0 (a port of the Apache code) plus ICU 2.0.2. Within the XML C++ parser, Schema is no longer an experimental parser API. Within the Java release, a rewrite of the codebase has been done, providing a cleaner, more modular, and easier to maintain design. External APIs were not affected by this change. Experimental parser APIs for IDOM and DOM 3 have been added. These APIs are not eligible for IBM Service. Processors The XSLT C++ and Java processors (Lotus XSL_C++ V1.3 and Lotus XSL_J V2.3.1) support includes the implementation of XSLT and XML Path Language (XPath). The XSLT Java processor also includes JAXP and Transformation API for XML (TRaX) support. Planning Information XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.4 (5655-J51) replaces XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 1.3 (5655-D44). XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.3 customers can migrate to XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.4 by ordering 5655-J51 (for product package) and 5655-I30 (for service and support of XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.4).
Effective December 31, 2003, IBM is discontinuing program
services for XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1.3 (566-D44).

Technical InformationSpecified Operating EnvironmentHardware Requirements
The hardware requirements for this product are any IBM Software RequirementsXML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 requires z/OS V1.1 (5694-A01), or later; or OS/390 V2.8 (5647-A01), or later; or z/OS.e V1.3 (5655-G52), or later. In addition, z/OS UNIX® or OS/390 UNIX System Services base elements must be active. The Java XML parser and XSLT processor require that IBM Development Kit for OS/390, Java 2 Technology Edition (5655-D35), at the SDK V1.3 level with PTF UQ56153, or later be installed. Compatibility: The XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 is based on open source software from Apache which does not provide for upward compatibility. Care must be taken when installing XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 since the parsers in this toolkit are not upward compatible with previous versions. The packaging of XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 is designed so that applications that are using either XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.3 or XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.2 will continue to run. This allows for continued use of these levels of the toolkit by applications that have written to their specific APIs. Issues associated with upward compatibility of XML releases are a recognized topic amongst the XML open source community. Limitations: For important information about interoperability and supported environments, refer to the XML Toolkit Web site at: Planning InformationInstallability: Due to general lack of upward compatibility in the Apache open source code upon which it is based, XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 cannot guarantee upward compatibility. Therefore, applications based on prior releases, in general, may need to continue to require those prior releases. In support of these releases, both the V1.3 and V1.2 product are included with XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 and will be installed, by default, along with V1.4, if not already present. Customers who already have XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.3 or V1.2 installed can install XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, V1.4 on the same system (in the same SMP/E zone). Unique considerations apply to customers currently requiring the V1.1 XML Toolkit. Continued use of the V1.1 XML Toolkit, along with V1.2, V1.3, and V1.4, requires its installation in separate SMP/E zones, target and distribution libraries, and HFS paths from V1.2, V1.3, and V1.4 (V1.2 through V1.4 can be installed together). V1.1 XML Toolkit customers should consult the program directory for details. Packaging: XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390, in SMP/E installable format, will be available, via download, from the Internet and in tape form from IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF). It will also be available as a tar file downloadable package. Programs ordered via SDF are distributed with the following content:
