Description

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms technology is a powerful information broker that selects and distributes information to the applications, databases, and people that need it.

Users can implement realtime, application-to-application message transformation, and intelligent message routing quickly and easily. It is flexible. Applications can be added, extended, or replaced within information flows.

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms is a cross-platform middleware application integration engine — a powerful information broker — that manages:

  • Business information integration
  • Application integration
  • Integrated application data with business data, builds dynamic distribution mechanism for information for users to subscribe to applications
  • Visualization of application flow through the use of a graphical development environment
  • WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms works closely with relational databases to augment messages and also to warehouse data
  • Messages can be distributed using a dynamic publish/subscribe mechanism that enables the subscriber to filter messages based on content

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms is architected with a library of nodes produced by IBM and delivered with the product. In addition, further plug-in nodes and parsers can be downloaded. WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms does not contain the Rules and Formatter found in WebSphere MQ Integrator

Customers, Business Partners, or other third parties may add to these functions by developing plug-ins used with this open framework concept.

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms uses WebSphere MQ to send and receive messages between applications. With WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms, operations are performed on the messages. These operations could include:

  • Filtering
  • Computational (based on message content)
  • Augmenting messages from business data
  • Application of a variety of rules and routing functions, including publish and subscribe

Message formats can be self-defining, using XML, or defined using an IBM-provided format repository or third-party message dictionaries. Predefined templates mean WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms can exchange information with major packaged applications.

Benefits

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms offers flexibility for customers who do not need the Rules and Formatter but require all the other functions provided by WebSphere MQ Integrator.

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms includes a full license for MQSeries®, a restricted copy of DB2® Enterprise Edition plus the ability to install WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms on a variety of platforms. Refer to the Licensing section for details.

Features

Improved Message Repository Manager (MRM): WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms includes a new version of the MRM with significantly enhanced support for XML messages and support for industry-standard "tag delimited" message formats such as SWIFT, EDI, and AL3 (ACORD).

Extensions to the Logical Model

  • Explicit cardinal attributes. MRM 2 supports four basic cardinal attributes (one, one or more, one or zero, zero or more) plus the ability to extend this to cardinal attributes such as more than two and less than six.
  • Sequence and Choice. Compound types have a composition property that defines how they are composed of their type members. In a sequence, the type members (if present) must appear in the order specified. In a choice, at most one of the type members can appear.
  • OrderedSet and UnorderedSet. Two further composition types required for XML modeling allow compound types to be composed of other types. This is to allow modeling of DTD elements whose content specs include parentheses; for example, (A,B | C,D).
  • Support for ANY, EMPTY, and MIXED element content.
  • XML attribute support. Allows XML attributes to be modeled as child elements. This also implies that a compound type can have a value (previously only simple types held values).
  • Support for DATE/TIME/DATETIME datatypes.
  • More than one CWF format may be defined per message set.
  • Application Header. A structure may be specified to be used as an application header for all messages in the set. Many XML message sets are designed in a header/body pattern. Distinguishing a header in this way allows WebSphere MQ Integrator to read the header to ascertain the message type of the body.
  • User-definable properties. A message designer can add new attribute/value pairs for an element or type modeled in the MRM. These properties will be accessible at runtime.

New XML Mapping Layer: A new "XML layer" in the data model allows the following aspects of the mapping between the logical model and physical XML to be defined:

  • Control whether XML descriptors and doctype are generated or not and control their content
  • Customize the XML root element name to allow messages other than native MRM messages to be modeled
  • Identify or specify an element name or value in the XML as containing the message type identifier
  • Identify the XML element and attribute names to be used for child elements (unless defined in this layer), the default is to use the logical model's element identifier
  • Render logical datatypes into their physical representation in the XML (particularly the rendering of DATE/TIME/ DATETIME), which can also be customized

In addition, the range of supported identifiers includes any valid XML element name, without the ":" character (in other words, it must start with a letter or underscore and can continue with letters, digits, underscores, hyphens, or full stops).

Tagged Format Support: A new Tag Wire Format (TWF) layer in the message model allows the physical mapping to be defined for tag-delimited strings:

  • Tag indicator — A reserved string that delimits the start of a tagged value
  • Tag Terminator — A reserved string that delimits the end of a tagged value
  • Tag separator — A reserved string that separates the tag from its field
  • Continuation character. Used to indicate the continuation of field data onto a new line
  • Escape character — Used so that special reserved characters (such as delimiters) can be included as part of data
  • Reserved characters — String that specifies special reserved characters that must be preceded by the escape character if they are to be included as part of the data
  • Message-begin delimiter — Special reserved character used to indicate start of a message body
  • Message-end delimiter — Special reserved character used to indicate end of a message body

Specializations of this TWF layer are provided with preset values for:

  • SWIFT (ISO 15022)
  • EDI — X.12 (ISO 9735) and EDIFACT
  • ACORD/AL3

Enhanced Support for Plug-in Node Developers: The plug-in node API enables customers and Business Partners to write additional input nodes for IBM WebSphere MQ Integrator V2.1.

A new set of Java objects and classes is provided to support the development and deployment of plug-in nodes written in Java. This new interface provides access to the full range of function required for the development of new plug-in nodes.

New ESQL Features: ESQL has been enhanced with the following functions. The SELECT function now allows arbitrary restructuring of message trees, even those with nested repetitions. The SQL standard CREATE PROCEDURE, CREATE FUNCTION, and CALL statements are introduced. Database stored procedures defined to the broker by the CREATE PROCEDURE statement can be invoked by the CALL statement. This allows stored procedures to have proper parameter type matching and to return output values. Field references may now contain expressions for the type, name, and index of fields, allowing fields whose names are not known until runtime to be accessed without the slow EVAL statement.

Other Improvements

  • Version control for plug-in nodes
  • Control center security exit
  • User-written events
  • Partial parsing

WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms

Use of Components on Separate Machines: WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms consists of several components:

  • Message Broker
  • Configuration Manager
  • User name Server
  • Database Manager
  • Control Center

Each component may be installed on only a single machine at any one time under the terms and conditions of the WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms license, except for the control center, which may be installed on multiple machines provided they are all used in conjunction with the same message broker machine.

The message broker component determines how Capacity Unit requirements are calculated. Calculations must be made using the appropriate type of processor for the operating system in use.

Capacity Unit (CU) Requirements for WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms Products

The charge unit for WebSphere MQ Integrator servers is based on CUs, with each processor group requiring a certain number of CUs.

Single Processor Entry Charge (One CU): Customers with limited need for information brokering can purchase and use a single CU of WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms. Examples are use by a department, a small or medium business for a pilot project, or as a node in a distributed broker architecture.

The restrictions of the single CU license are:

  • The product must be used only on a single processor (uniprocessor) server
  • There are no more than three connections to an end point

A connection to an end point is defined as a bidirectional communication path between WebSphere MQ Integrator Broker for Multiplatforms and a single instance of an application, application adapter, client device, gateway, proxy, or other message broker.
