Information that you can subscribe to and easily personalize using WebSphere MQ Event Broker brings together:
The full publish/subscribe function in the WebSphere MQ base and in WebSphere MQ Integrator is supported, together with new JMS clients for fast, direct non-persistent messaging. Other members of the WebSphere MQ family can be used to publish information to brokers or to connect remote or mobile devices into the system. WebSphere MQ Event Broker is available on the following platforms:
This product was previewed in November 2001, under the name WebSphere MQ Publish and Subscribe Edition. Refer to Software Announcement 201-317 , dated November 6, 2001. Key PrerequisitesHardware capable of running the appropriate operating system is specified in the Software Requirements section. Planned Availability Dates
DescriptionPublish and subscribe is a way for two sets of users to send messages without either of them knowing directly about the other:
WebSphere MQ Event Broker combines the assured delivery of WebSphere MQ with fast publish/subscribe (pub/sub) technology suitable for thousands of users. As a publisher, you can deliver messages to ensure that the subscriber receives them, or so that messages are seen only while the subscriber is monitoring for them. Message subscribers can ask to see only certain topics. Within those topics, they can ask to select only messages with certain contents. Their subscriptions can be changed at any time. WebSphere MQ Event Broker supports Java Message Service (JMS) clients for both assured delivery and optimized, non-persistent messages. Both point-to-point and pub/sub messaging are supported, although the optimized broker only supports pub/sub. JMS is a Java language API for Enterprise Messaging. It covers both pub/sub and point-to-point messaging. As a standard, it covers only the program interface, not communication protocols. Although it dictates various quality of service levels, it does not require any particular implementation. For example, a JMS provider can choose to adopt a traditional Message Queuing design, or a database-centered one. Implementations can be peer-to-peer, hub and spoke, or a mixture of the two. The significance of JMS to WebSphere MQ derives from its inclusion in the J2EE family of standard APIs. An Enterprise Java Bean server is required to implement this set of APIs. With WebSphere MQ Event Broker, you can reach more customers or employees using pub/sub technology. WebSphere MQ Event Broker distributes information about events you personalize at the topic and content level. Whether you need to integrate information from WebSphere MQ, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) software-enabled devices, IBM WebSphere MQ Everyplace or Internet Protocol (IP) technology-based messages, WebSphere MQ Event Broker can handle it all. JMS is available. This full integration allows seamless interoperation with IBM WebSphere MQ applications and the ability to reuse existing MQ skills and resources. WebSphere MQ Integrator already contains extensive publish/subscribe capability. Migration and compatibility with WebSphere MQ Integrator is maintained. You can use other products in the WebSphere MQ family to publish information to brokers, or to connect remote or mobile devices with the system. These products can connect, disconnect and reconnect whenever they need to be a part of the current message flow providing full interoperability among clients. WebSphere MQ Event Broker allows application portability and integration with IBM WebSphere software. A Publish/Subscribe Broker: WebSphere MQ Event Broker can distribute information to applications and people that have registered for information on the data topic and data value. It manages the flow of information from remote devices to enterprise applications that need the data. With WebSphere MQ Event Broker, a publisher is a provider of information and a subscriber the consumer who uses the information, needs no knowledge of the publisher. As a publisher, you can help ensure message delivery to the subscriber or allow messages to be seen only while the subscriber is monitoring them. Subscribers can specify the topic and content of the information they want to receive. For example, send an alert when the value of the kilowatt exceeds $25.50; send a notice of trades of stock over U.S. $2M; send an alert when the pressure of valve number 3 on pipeline number 2 reaches 100 psi; a notice to inform you when your child activates your mobile phone; and display the lap speed and acceleration rates of car number 13 for the last ten laps. Subscription specifications can be changed at any time. Data supplied by a publisher is constantly changing and you can quickly update multiple subscribers with the latest information. What You Need is Yours: Communication is a vital part of running a successful business. WebSphere MQ Event Broker helps you provide positive interaction that promotes long-term relationships with your customers. Build customer loyalty through personalized subscriptions that results in repeat purchases. Detailed content control gives you current, relevant information and avoids overwhelming customers with useless data. This level of control helps to improve customer satisfaction and drives sales productivity. It also helps reduce costs and helps increase operational effectiveness. WebSphere MQ Event Broker accommodates telemetry and pervasive devices and associated applications, enabling them to become a part of your business processes anytime, anywhere. The WebSphere MQ Family and Business Integration: e-business is accelerating the pace of change. Speed to market and quality of service are critical for success so companies need to be agile to survive. The WebSphere MQ family provides a versatile platform for e-business. The WebSphere MQ family allows companies to maximize e-business opportunities by:
There are now three pub/sub broker solutions in the WebSphere MQ family. In order of capability and price, these are:
WebSphere MQ Event Broker fills the gap between the Publish/Subscribe SupportPac (MA0C) available with WebSphere MQ and the full WebSphere MQ Integrator product. Customers who primarily need only the pub/sub function in WebSphere MQ Integrator may wish to choose WebSphere MQ Event Broker. Customers who need the full database and data transformation function should choose WebSphere MQ Integrator. Although JMS and Application Messaging Interface (AMI) pub/sub are supported by using the MA0C SupportPac alone, and performance has been improved for this SupportPac. Performance using WebSphere MQ Event Broker is better for many usage scenarios. For example, it would give increased throughput when there are large numbers of subscribers with messages that don't need assured delivery. Another factor is that the SupportPac does not support subscription by content. Statement of DirectionIBM plans to enhance WebSphere MQ Event Broker to include the following platform support during the fourth quarter of 2002:

Planning InformationClarification of Capacity Unit Requirements for WebSphere MQ Products: This section applies to all WebSphere MQ server products priced using WebSphere MQ capacity units.
For further pricing and licensing information, visit: Use of Components on Separate Machines: WebSphere MQ Event Broker consists of several components:
Capacity Units are required for every machine on which the broker component contained in the program's media package is installed. Use of the Configuration Manager is limited to one additional Intel-based (or equivalent) machine. No separate server authorizations are required to license any other component part of the media package It is the use of the Message Broker component that determines how capacity unit requirements are calculated. Calculations must be made using the appropriate type of processor for the operating system in use. Refer also to the Terms and Conditions section. Customer Responsibilities: The customer must provide the minimum hardware and software environments in which the licensed programs run. The customer must identify the machines on which they will install WebSphere MQ. The customer or program provider will identify the tier in which they fit, and then calculate the level of Capacity-Unit Charge for the required Use Authorization. Before operating the system, the customer must confirm that they have sufficient Use Authorization to use the system. Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product. Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility. Installability: WebSphere MQ Event Broker, V2.1 can run on the same machine as WebSphere MQ Integrator but does not share workload processing with it. Certain objects are incompatible between the two products. Packaging: The packaging of WebSphere MQ Event Broker, V2.1 is via media packs or software download only. The product is sold only through Passport Advantage; no shrinkwrap packages are available. Security, Auditability, and ControlSecurity for this product is similar to WebSphere MQ Integrator. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Ordering InformationWebSphere MQ products use a flexible pricing structure. The pricing structure simplifies the development and management of complex applications, particularly for large organizations There is only one charge unit for these products, the Capacity Unit. The price model is structured over tiers that are defined by machine type or numbers of processors. The greater the number of processors per machine, the higher the tier position and the more Use Authorizations needed to use the program. This applies to each machine and machine upgrade. Capacity Unit Use Authorization is required for each machine according to the table. Capacity Units are not supplied with media packs, and must be acquired separately under Passport Advantage.
