With the introduction of Web services support, VisualAge® Smalltalk V6.0 can allow you to take your existing and future Smalltalk assets and create self-contained, modular applications. Using industry-standard protocols such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) messaging and WebSphere® Open Servlet Engine (OSE) plug-in, your valuable, proven Smalltalk code can integrate with anyone, anywhere on the net. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) enables your Smalltalk applications to use Open SSL to heighten security for any transactions running over Socket Communication Interface (SCI). Web ServicesWith VisualAge Smalltalk Web services support, you can take your existing, proven Smalltalk code and turn it into a new breed of Web application. With VisualAge Smalltalk 6.0, you can blend Web services into their enterprise applications, including:
SSLHelp protect your Smalltalk business assets with SSL. VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0 has embraced OpenSSL to supply the communication security you need. Existing programs written to the SCI API can be security enabled with a few simple changes to the code.
VisualAge Smalltalk has integrated the full-strength, general purpose
cryptography library of OpenSSL with the flexibility of Server Smalltalk.
The same SSL support provided by SCI can also be easily employed to
secure Smalltalk-to-Smalltalk applications. In addition Server
Smalltalk now has HTTPS support to enhance security for Web applications.
Linux and Windows XP/ME
VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0 adds support for Red Hat Linux, Windows XP, and
Windows Me operating systems. Now Smalltalk developers can work and
deploy on Linux, Windows, AIX®, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and OS/2®. You
can also create applications to be deployed on the mainframe with
VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390 and z/OS.
Server Workbench
All of the function of VisualAge Smalltalk Server Workbench is now
included in the base product. By simplifying the purchasing of VisualAge
Smalltalk, your developers can now take advantage of all the function
offered in our product with one price. The function of Smalltalk Server
Workbench offers a convenient way to develop applications that access the
information and transactions your users need via the Web or intranet.

Security, Auditability, and ControlVisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise V6.0 uses the security and auditability features of the development platform. VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390® logs all changes in a source change log and captures change management and versioning information in a source code repository that can reside on the client machine or within a network. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
