Overview

Through the pure object-oriented language of Smalltalk you can quickly create portable, scalable, multi-tier business applications.

With the introduction of Web services support, VisualAge® Smalltalk V6.0 can allow you to take your existing and future Smalltalk assets and create self-contained, modular applications. Using industry-standard protocols such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) messaging and WebSphere® Open Servlet Engine (OSE) plug-in, your valuable, proven Smalltalk code can integrate with anyone, anywhere on the net.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) enables your Smalltalk applications to use Open SSL to heighten security for any transactions running over Socket Communication Interface (SCI).

VisualAge Smalltalk has expanded its world-class development environment to include Linux, Windows® XP, and Windows Me. Functions such as Server Smalltalk (SST) and Asynchronous call-out have been expanded beyond your current platforms to OS/390®, z/OS™, and HP-UX.

The power to create, deploy, and debug distributed server applications through VisualAge Smalltalk Server Workbench is now completely included in the base product, VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise. VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise V6.0 can bring you the best in object-oriented application development environments. Create client-server applications that can meet and exceed your development needs. As you face ever-changing user requirements and the need to integrate with new technology, VisualAge Smalltalk gives you the tools to be more productive, more integrated, and react to the needs of your customers.

Web Services

With VisualAge Smalltalk Web services support, you can take your existing, proven Smalltalk code and turn it into a new breed of Web application. Your valuable, mission-critical applications can soon be self-contained, self describing, modular applications that can communicate with other Web services using standard protocols. With VisualAge Smalltalk 6.0, you can blend Web services into their enterprise applications, including:

  • One-step deployment of proxy services based upon the Web Services Definition Language (WSDL)
  • Pluggable transport mechanism (for V6.0, HTTP and HTTPS provided)
  • Ability to host Web services
  • Ability to wrap existing business objects and expose them as Web services

SSL

Help protect your Smalltalk business assets with SSL. VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0 has embraced OpenSSL to supply the communication security you need. Existing programs written to the SCI API can be security enabled with a few simple changes to the code.

VisualAge Smalltalk has integrated the full-strength, general purpose cryptography library of OpenSSL with the flexibility of Server Smalltalk. The same SSL support provided by SCI can also be easily employed to secure Smalltalk-to-Smalltalk applications. In addition Server Smalltalk now has HTTPS support to enhance security for Web applications.

Linux and Windows XP/ME

VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0 adds support for Red Hat Linux, Windows XP, and Windows Me operating systems. Now Smalltalk developers can work and deploy on Linux, Windows, AIX®, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and OS/2®. You can also create applications to be deployed on the mainframe with VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390 and z/OS.

Server Workbench

All of the function of VisualAge Smalltalk Server Workbench is now included in the base product. By simplifying the purchasing of VisualAge Smalltalk, your developers can now take advantage of all the function offered in our product with one price. The function of Smalltalk Server Workbench offers a convenient way to develop applications that access the information and transactions your users need via the Web or intranet.

Other Items

VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise V6.0 continues to improve and enhance the development environment including:

  • Asynchronous call-out support on all platforms now including HP-UX, Linux, OS/390, and z/OS

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: Customers creating Windows-based applications for redistribution require a license from Microsoft in order to redistribute Win32s DLLs.

Packaging: The program is distributed on CD-ROM and electronic distribution. It is distributed in a separate package with the content listed below:

    The documentation and code for this product is provided on CD-ROM.

  • IBM International Program Licensing Agreement and License Information on CD-ROM

This program when downloaded from a Web site, contains the applicable IBM license agreement, and License Information (LI), if appropriate and will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. The license and LI will be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT for future reference.

Security, Auditability, and Control

VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise V6.0 uses the security and auditability features of the development platform. VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390® logs all changes in a source change log and captures change management and versioning information in a source code repository that can reside on the client machine or within a network.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Licensing: IBM International Program License Agreement. Proofs of Entitlement are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.

License Information Form Number: The LI is contained on the product CD, thus there is no Licence Information Form Number.

Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Subscription and Technical Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the product announced in this letter is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.

IBM includes Software Maintenance with each program acquired during the coverage period. This is the period commencing on the date you acquire the program up to the first or second anniversary date, depending on whether you acquired coverage for one or two anniversaries. The coverage period for Software Maintenance acquired in the two months preceding an anniversary date will be extended to the next applicable anniversary date.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your:

  • Routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions
  • Code-related questions

IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. Software Maintenance does not include assistance for:
