DB2 High Performance Unload (DB2 HPU) for Multiplatforms V2.1

DB2 HPU gives customers a fast and efficient tool for unloading and extracting data for movement across the enterprise or for reorganization in-place. The product delivers high levels of parallelism and distribution of data across multiple logical nodes. DB2 HPU supports DB2 Enterprise Edition (EE) and DB2 Extended Enterprise Edition (EEE) thus supporting SMP and massively parallel processing (MPP) hardware configurations. It processes multiple select statements at the same time so that multiple requests of the DB2 UDB will be processed in a single scan of the table.

DB2 HPU also has the capability to:

  • Rapidly unload tablespaces of all types supported by DB2
  • Make the output file-set a tape, disk or named pipe, formatted suitably for optional reorg or reload
  • Simultaneously execute several unloads accessing the same tablespace
  • Do unload against backups to eliminate interference with DB2 production databases (the backups can be the last full copy or any full copy)
  • Unload selected rows and columns
  • Unload every n rows and maximum rows
  • Generate load control statements for subsequent reload
  • Optionally unload data and move information from a partitioned table to a single file-set for use in another database environment
  • Unload DB2 UDB table data from multiple database partitions in a single request

DB2 HPU can be used as the basis of a very high-speed reorganization, as well as high-speed data movement. It supports DB2 V7, or later, running on AIX, Windows, Linux, HP-UX, and Sun's Solaris operating environment. Support for Linux, HP-UX, and Sun's Solaris operating environment will be available on September 6, 2002.

DB2 Recovery Expert for Multiplatforms V1.1

Database administrators (DBAs) are constantly being challenged by demands for greater availability and timeliness of larger and larger volumes of data, data being maintained for increasingly complex and critical e-business applications. Margins for error are shrinking, as is the time available to recover from them. These conditions require new techniques and tools to stay operational. DB2 Recovery Expert for Multiplatforms (Microsoft Windows, HP-UX, Sun's Solaris operating environment, AIX, and Linux) is just such a tool, providing targeted, flexible, and automated recovery of database assets, even as systems remain online.

DB2 Recovery Expert provides an easy-to-use environment that even less experienced DBAs can successfully use to complete highly sophisticated and efficient recovery techniques in minimal time. Built-in "Self-Managing and Resource Tuning" (SMART) features provide intelligent analysis of altered, incorrect, or missing database assets including tables, indexes, or data and automate the process of rebuilding those assets to a correct "point-in-time," often without taking the database or business operations offline.

Multiple Functions Coordinated for Fast Results: DB2 Recovery Expert leverages existing DB2 recovery resources and intelligently augments them to provide the shortest paths to error-free recovery.

Log mining provides targeted, automated analysis of DB2 log files related to the database assets and activities you specify as most important. This technology provides the foundation for the DB2 Recovery Expert log analysis reports, used to pin-point changes to data. The result is a rapid capability for monitoring and auditing changes to data, a simple way to specify which data changes to roll back, and extremely rapid recovery of data to a desired point-in-time, with or without accompanying disaster recovery procedures.

DB2 Recovery Expert "mini-logs," also generated by the DB2 Recovery Expert log mining technology, introduce a new and efficient asset into the DBA's arsenal of recovery methods, reducing the time, effort, and storage needs required to carry out targeted recovery operations. Tuned to parameters set by the DBA, mini-logs are created from only the log records essential to the situation. In large disaster scenarios that may exceed the scope of the mini-log data, DB2 Recovery Expert intelligently falls back to using DB2 logs where absolutely required. In virtually any scenario, recovery operations are easier, more efficient, and far less obtrusive to administrative and business operations.

The DB2 Recovery Expert object repository adds a new dimension to object recovery by also making possible vastly simplified object version control. Whether restoring an incorrect index, replacing an accidentally dropped table, or simply returning a table structure back to a prior (and since lost) design, the object repository automates management of all elements crucial to database structure. DB2 Recovery Expert can intelligently merge mini-log, DB2 log, and object repository resources to bring back complete object structure and data to a desired prior state, and even recreate database objects to new locations with new object identifiers correctly translated. Recoverable object types include databases, tablespaces, tables, indexes, and data.

SMART Assistance Within a Productive Interface: DB2 Recovery Expert's SMART interface will select automatically appropriate recovery mechanisms based on input criteria. For example, recovering to a specific point-in-time can be accomplished with standard object recovery or with a backout of the database changes.

If the DBA chooses to use a backout method, the log analysis function can be invoked to first locate the data changes that should be backed out. DB2 Recovery Expert provides a simple, menu-driven interface that allows specification of the scope of data changes you want to view by dates, tablespaces, and tables. The format of these surveys enhances the administrator's ability to distinguish between ordinary and questionable data changes.

Users can drill down and drill through from one report level to the next by clicking on hyperlinks. For example, starting at the summary report, you can click on the UPDATE keyword. This will show you a summary of all of the updates within the scope of the analysis. Scope parameters are echoed back to the user as well.

Once the set of changes that must be reversed (all or a subset) are identified, they may be easily undone by the DBA. Tight control over the specifications for any undo operation (down to the unit of recovery ID (URID) and table level) allows recovery from nearly any scope of improper changes, with far more precise results than are possible with a typical restore, and in much less time.

Redo operations are carried out with equal ease and precision. Whether copying changes to another database or adjusting a large scale undo operation, the log analysis function generates the necessary SQL that is sent to a file for execution by any method preferred by the database administrator.

Some of the data change reporting features that are available in this scenario are:

  • Set filtering criteria for reporting data changes by authid (if DATA CAPTURE is turned on), table, database, tablespace or data ranges, or obid
  • Produce summary reports from which drill-down detailed reports can be obtained
  • View filtered summary of desired date range, tables, and more
  • View detail and add filters if greater focus desired
  • View detailed report showing all data change events including original state, current state, INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE executed
  • SQL for undo can be generated automatically
  • URID or table level specificity
  • UNDO and REDO SQL sent to file for execution in manner specified by DBA
  • Printable reports can be produced when performing log analysis as a batch job from the command line

Had the DBA elected to follow an object restore method, objects could be presented in several views: for example, sorted by name or only displaying dropped objects. Then a group of functions is made available (optionally along with data recovery functions), to perform recreation and "housekeeping" operations, including:

  • Generation and execution of necessary data definition language (DDL) to recreate dropped objects, using the object restore versioning repository to select objects
  • Generation and execution of appropriate table authorizations

Recovering Structure, Maintaining Integrity: A key strategic advantage of DB2 Recovery Expert for the enterprise is its reliability in handling and maintaining logical structures essential to database integrity.

For example, when a database has been deleted, the corresponding tablespaces, tables (files), and indexes are also deleted. Similarly, when tablespaces, tables, and indexes are dropped, whatever structures underlie them in the hierarchy (database, tablespaces, tables, and indexes) are also dropped.

Object restoration not only restores dropped objects, it also restores related dependencies. It rebuilds automatically the structure of dependent objects when an object higher in the hierarchy is restored. For example, restoration of a table also restores that table's indexes. Similarly, when restoring database objects and data from a backup and log records, DB2 Recovery Expert appropriately translates the internal object IDs for the recreated objects. With this technology, data can be restored to new locations (with the re-mapping of internal identifiers).

DB2 Performance Expert for Multiplatforms V1.1

DB2 Performance Expert for Multiplatforms offers a comprehensive view that consolidates, reports, analyzes, and recommends changes on DB2 performance related information. DB2 Performance Expert (DB2 PE) can selectively employ and integrate the view from all "trace" sources, snapshot, and event outputs. Plus, it provides online snapshot reports, a buffer pool analyzer and reporting facility, and can selectively store performance data in its own managed performance data warehouse intended for further study and evaluation at the detailed and "rolled up" level. With its starter set of SMART capabilities, DB2 PE also gives you recommendations for system tuning to gain optimum throughput.

DB2 PE gives you a state-of-the-art workstation user interface (UI). The UI simplifies DBA tasks by providing a common tool's UI across DB2 server platforms, thus reducing the training requirements for DBAs across these platforms. The UI can be started stand-alone or launched via a plug-in from the DB2 Control Center.

DB2 Performance Expert for Multiplatforms supports DB2 Universal Database on Microsoft Windows, HP-UX, Sun's Solaris operating environment, AIX, and Linux.

DB2 PE Performance Monitor: You can use DB2 PE to:

  • Monitor DB2 and DB2 applications online and by evaluating the report sets
  • View and examine the status of a DB2 instance and its applications while they are currently active or investigate events and performance problems that happened in the past
  • Monitor individual nodes or an entire system
  • Obtain tuning recommendations
  • Recognize periodic exceptions and event exceptions and take appropriate actions by means of a user exit
  • Recognize trends and anticipate potential bottlenecks

The DB2 PE output gives you valuable hints on potential performance problems and useful assistance for corrective and preventive measures. The Online Monitor observes and records selected activities within DB2 and DB2 applications. The user-defined exception processing can recognize significant deviations from the norm and notify the user who is working with the Online Monitor.

The reporting facility presents performance information about details of events in reports, graphs, and data sets. The system-wide performance data shows information about CPU times, buffer pool usage, locking, I/O activity, and more. For a particular application, you can find out, for example, the:

  • Elapsed time
  • Time spent in DB2
  • Time it was suspended
  • Read and write activity involved
  • Locks obtained
  • SQL statements executed

DB2 PE Warehouse: As well as being viewed interactively, the performance data gathered can be saved automatically in a system maintained performance data warehouse. Additional analytical analysis can be performed on the time series data looking for trends, growth or potential problems.

DB2 PE Buffer Pool Analyzer: Buffer pools are considered among the most valuable components of a relational database system. To obtain information on current buffer pool behavior, DB2 PE Buffer Pool Analyzer collects data and provides detailed reports on related event activity. It can provide these reports in the form of tables, pie charts, and diagrams.

Dependencies: The product is supported on any processor capable of operating DB2 UDB V7, or later. The product requires the DB2 UDB for Linux (I32 and z/OS™), AIX, Microsoft Windows, HP-UX, Sun's Solaris operating environment, DB2 V7, or later.
