The WebSphere for Multiplatforms V4.1 consists of three products:
WebSphere Portal offerings are packaged so that a single part number delivers products installable on all supported platforms. The National Language Versions of these products contain all translated languages. Both the platform and language used are specified during product installation. Each geography supports a subset of the languages provided. WebSphere Portal Enable: WebSphere Portal Enable lets you quickly build highly scalable portals that help simplify and speed a user's access to personalized information and applications. The Portal framework provides common services, including connectivity, integration, administration, and presentation, that are required across portal environments.
WebSphere Portal Enable provides a great many portlets for functions like e-mail, calendars, collaboration, and syndicated news. In keeping with its commitment to open standards, IBM provides a portlet API so you easily extend portlet function. The variety of available portlets is expected to grow. Portal Enable helps you improve productivity by including access to enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and supply chain management (SCM) enterprise applications. User logons to WebSphere Portal pass through an authentication layer that provides portal access control. If the logon is authenticated, a "single sign-on" component stores user information for later use by other programs that require authentication, and user information is stored in a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory. Portal Enable customization functions allow users to select which applications they view and how they wish to view them. You can build a Web site that delivers customized Web content geared to the specific needs and interests of each site visitor. By invoking robust business rules or by using collaborative filtering technology, you can dynamically tailor content displayed by individual portlets to different users and groups. For a rules-based personalization solution, you can define a set of business rules that determine which Web content is displayed for a particular user. Portal Extend also offers extended search functionality. To solve problems quickly, users often need to make ad-hoc queries to gather new information. Portal Extend provides extended search capabilities across relational databases such as DB2 Universal Database® (UDB) and Oracle, Lotus Notes and Lotus® Domino™ databases, Web search engines, and text or HTML documents. You can make parallel searches across data sources and combine results into consolidated lists of matching documents, which avoids serial searches and saves time. Portal Extend allows you to understand how users access your portal so you can act on that knowledge to help stay competitive and anticipate customer demand. Portal Extend includes robust Web analysis technology to help you obtain and leverage critical knowledge to optimize you portal. You can capture, store, measure, report, and chart Web site visitor trends and preferences to get a detailed view of events in order to make informed decisions about Web initiatives from content design appeal to marketing advertisement effectiveness.
