Overview

The Gartner Group indicates that directories will become a critical security infrastructure to support e-business initiatives.1 This research shows that the biggest concern of enterprises about embracing Web services is "security & authentication" (Evans Data Corp. per January 21, 2002 NetworkWorld). Technology can only be a key differentiator if it is trusted. Wherever companies are in their e-business transition cycle, there should be a software infrastructure designed to bring the level of security necessary for users, suppliers, and customers so they can trust the system.

A critical part of a secure enterprise is a consistent and effective directory infrastructure to rapidly and precisely identify application users and resources. Enterprises should not build secure dynamic e-business applications on an inaccurate directory infrastructure. As firms build their dynamic e-business architectures, they should deploy directory technologies to securely identify users and resources.

Directory Server V4.1 plays key roles in building trust by enabling business integration that:

  • Includes a number of key IBM and independent software vendor (ISV) programs that provide a necessary common denominator for identifying users. For example, the Directory Server functionality has been included in WebSphere® Application Server and Commerce offerings, and Tivoli® Security solutions.
  • Supports a wide variety of platforms yielding a broad number of solutions.

In addition, the new IBM Meta-directory and Directory Professional Services provide integration middleware solutions to tie together heterogeneous directories.
