Overview

The IBM Tivoli® Monitoring product allows you to apply pre-configured best practices "out-of-the-box" to:

  • Automate the task of monitoring essential system resources
  • Detect bottlenecks and potential problems
  • Automatically recover from critical situations without system administrators scanning through extensive performance data

IBM Tivoli Monitoring also provides the foundation for additional automated best practices via Proactive Analysis Components (PACs) for managing business critical hardware and software including middleware, applications, and databases. In addition, IBM Tivoli Monitoring provides tight integration with other Tivoli Availability solutions, including the Tivoli Business System Manager and the Tivoli Enterprise™ Console, to provide a comprehensive end-to-end availability solution.

Based on the new IBM Tivoli Monitoring technology, IBM Tivoli Monitoring Active Directory Option provides a valuable set of pre-configured, out-of-the-box automated best practices that can help you proactively manage the directory by monitoring essential resources and detecting potential problems. IBM Tivoli Monitoring Active Directory Option also provides tight integration with other Tivoli Performance and Availability solutions, including the Tivoli Business System Manager and the Tivoli Enterprise Console®, providing a comprehensive end-to-end solution.

Description

IBM Tivoli Monitoring is designed to provide an efficient, reliable, and automated way to help ensure user access to mission-critical distributed applications and computing resources. The features of IBM Tivoli Monitoring allow you to configure, monitor, and manage distributed systems from a central location.

Application Management Support

In addition to monitoring business critical system resources, IBM Tivoli Monitoring now provides a solid foundation for managing applications with automated best practices.

JMX Support

IBM Tivoli Monitoring can be leveraged to monitor JMX-instrumented applications with automated best practices. And with the IBM Monitoring Workbench, you can have the ability to customize the out-of-the-box best practices knowledge and the ability to create new best practices knowledge specific to your business needs.

Rapid Deployment

IBM Tivoli Monitoring can be deployed rapidly and easily, by leveraging the RAPTOR deployment solution.

Distribution Enhancements

IBM Tivoli Monitoring supports MDIST II. This can enhance the handling of distributions by:

  • Avoiding waiting until the delivery is completed for all the destinations.
  • Helping to assure the delivery of configuration information to all servers in an environment.
TEDW based reporting

IBM Tivoli Monitoring integrates with the Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse by providing key monitoring data which can be used for historical reporting.

Domain Controllers

Domain controller availability and performance metrics are monitored by IBM Tivoli Monitoring Active Directory Option. These metrics are critical to help assure that Active Directory is functioning properly. This means not only checking the functioning of each domain controller but also checking for the consistency and availability of Global Catalogs and Operations Masters in the forest and in the domain as well as the connectivity of replication partners.

Replication

Intra-site replication, inter-site replication, and FRS, which are all different aspects of replication processes taking place into Active Directory, are monitored to help verify that the directories are consistent among domains and sites. Moreover, the replication efficiency and network traffic generated are monitored in order to provide information for Active Directory replication configuration tuning.

Domain Name System (DNS)

Windows® 2000 DNS Server health and key performance counters are monitored. When DNS zones have been configured as integrated with Active Directory, the existence and accuracy of SRV records stored in Active Directory are also monitored.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Windows 2000 DHCP Server availability and performance are monitored in order to help verify that the IP leasing service to Active Directory is functioning properly.

PA Software Maintenance

Software Maintenance (called Support for Tivoli products outside of PA) is included with each product authorization acquired under PA.

Software Maintenance provides an easy and effective way by which you have access, during the coverage period, to eligible new versions and releases and to remote technical support for your covered products.

The technical support included in Software Maintenance provides remote support during normal business hours in your country or location as well as access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for mission-critical (Severity 1) problems.

With Software Maintenance, you receive the following technical support benefits:

  • Telephone access and/or electronic access via the Web to an IBM Customer Support Center.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related problems.
  • Support during normal country business hours, namely prime shift hours, Monday through Friday, excluding national or statutory holidays.
  • Support for mission-critical (severity 1) problems during non-prime shift hours, namely all hours outside normal country business hours including national and/or statutory holidays.
  • Two-hour response time objective during prime shift for voice and electronic submission. The response objective for critical/emergency problems during offshift is also two hours.
  • Access to hints, tips, and frequently asked questions.
  • Access to escalation management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Open Authorized Technical Caller list to submit problems to IBM Support Centers on your behalf. Open to any number of technical specialists within your IS organization. Each caller must be registered through the IBM problem submission Web site in order to submit problems. PA allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals, simplifying management and budgeting for eligible new versions and releases (and for related technical support) for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement (PAA), recurs on an annual basis while your PAA remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption.
