Description
WebSphere Studio product family brings together unparalleled integration
across development tools and can bridge the gap between distributed
teams. This comprehensive integrated set of tools for developing dynamic
e-business applications can provide everything a developer needs from
simple Web design to the most advanced Java development functions.
Whatever your development skill-set or need is, the WebSphere Studio
product family can provide you the tools you need to help build your
applications better and faster than before.
The latest addition to the WebSphere Studio product family is, WebSphere
Studio Site Developer Advanced for Windows, V4.0.3 (Site Developer
Advanced). Site Developer Advanced brings together all aspects of Web
application development into a common interface. It inherits
award-winning technology from VisualAge® for Java and adds support for
rich media, graphics, visual layout of dynamic Web pages, XML, Web
Services, team development, and a WebSphere Application Server runtime
for test and debug. It continues to provide tools to develop Web
applications that include static Web pages, JSPs, and Java Servlets.
This easy-to-use tool set is compliant with Sun Microsystems J2EE
specification allowing Web site authors and developers to easily exploit
Web and Java standards for both standard and dynamic Web applications
that include client side scripts and server-side logic with little or no
programming. Site Developer Advanced also includes an integrated Java
IDE, to assist Java programmers to customize applications to their needs.
WebSphere Studio Site Developer Advanced for Windows, V4.0.3 sets the
standard for Web site creation tools.
Key features of Site Developer Advanced are:
Web Development Tools
Site Developer Advanced provides users with many tools and wizards (for
generating database-driven pages) and updates. Corrects links
automatically when content changes and includes tools for developing
images and animated GIFs. With the integrated version control system
development environment, it is easy to collaboratively create, assemble,
publish, deploy, and maintain dynamic, interactive Web applications. A
Web developer has the following at their finger tips:
-
Web project creation, using the J2EE container structure
-
JSP and HTML file creation, editing, and debugging
-
Rich media tools to create compelling Web sites
-
XML file creation and editing
-
Automatic update of links as resources
-
Servlet creation by means of a wizard
-
Generation of Web applications from database queries and beans
-
Page analysis to optimize page design
-
Accessibility tool to build sites accessible to persons with handicaps
Page Designer
Site Developer Advanced's integrated, advanced WYSIWYG environment
enables you to create and work with a file while viewing its elements on
the page. You can simultaneously view both the source and design views
to simplify development. This advanced-function HTML editor allows you
to quickly build complex Web pages, both visually and textually. It
enables you to include form elements, Java applets, embedded scripts,
dynamic controls, and JSP tags. This integrated page designer is an
extension of the award winning Homepage Builder, which has been
acknowledged for its ease of use.
There are many views which are particularly helpful during Web
application development:
-
The gallery view contains catalogs of reusable files that can be applied
to Web pages
-
The file types available include images, wallpaper, WebArt, sound files,
style sheet files, and JavaScript files
-
The outline shows the outline of the file that you are currently editing.
For example, for an HTML file, the Outline view shows the tag structure
and hierarchy within the HTML file.
-
The context menu for any selected tag enables you to remove the tag, add
an attribute to the tag, add a child tag, and add a sibling tag before or
after the tag.
-
Properties view provides options for changing the appearance and state of
objects in your file. The properties view is an expandable table that
maps properties to their values.
-
The Links View is similar to the Relations view in Studio 4.0. It shows
the files in your projects, the linkages between them and the
characteristics of those linkages. This view shows the number of links
to target files, distinctions between different types of links, broken
links, and links to external files.
-
The thumbnail shows thumbnails of the images in the selected project,
folder, or file. This view is especially valuable when used in
conjunction with the Gallery view to add images from the artwork
libraries to your page designs. You can drag and drop from this view
into the Navigator view or the Design page of Page Designer.
-
Styles view provides guided editing for cascading style sheets and
individual style definitions for HTML elements.
-
Colors view allows you to apply colors from a palette (or custom colors)
to selected objects in the editing area.
-
The other views in this perspective are common throughout the workbench.
-
Roundtrip graphics editing with WebArt Designer and AnimatedGIF Designer.
Site Developer Advanced has many wizards that guide you through Servlet
creation, the process of creating SQL queries, choosing Java methods and
properties, and integrating them into the Web pages you are creating.
They allow you to create and specify settings for Web projects, HTML
files, and JSP files.
Rich Media
Enhance your Web site by including compelling multimedia effects,
rollover graphics, animated GIFs and much more with Site Developer
Advanced rich media tools. Create graphic titles, logos, buttons, vector
graphics drawings, and photoframes with professional looking touches
using WebArt Designer. Help Make life-like animation from still
pictures, graphics, and animated banners with AnimatedGif Designer. Make
your site more compelling with multimedia effects by adding streaming
audio synchronized with images, video, 3D objects and more with our
easy-to-use Hot media authoring environment. Site Developer Advanced
also includes a built-in library of thousands of images and sounds to
choose from.
Team Collaboration
Site Developer Advanced includes the same team development environment as
WebSphere Studio Application Developer and also allows you to use other
repositories. This allows for easier integration of SCM tools, more
flexibility in source management and team development and no duplication
of data in the file system and the workbench. Site Developer Advanced
includes Concurrent Versions System (CVS) and Rational ClearCase LT OEM
and adapters for the open source CVS.
Team developers can now do all of their work in their individual
workbenches, and then periodically feed changes to a "team stream." This
model allows individual developers to work on a team project, share their
work with others as changes are made, and access the work of other
developers as the project evolves. At any time, developers can update
their workbenches by retrieving the changes that have been made to the
team stream or by submitting changes to the team stream.
Web Services Development Environment
Site Developer Advanced includes all the tools needed to Discover,
Create, Build, Test, Deploy and Publish Web service-enabled applications.
Web services tools included in Site Developer Advanced are a Web Services
Client wizard, a Web Services DADX Group Configuration wizard, a Web
Services wizard, and the IBM UDDI Explorer. The Web services development
tools in Site Developer Advanced are based on open, cross-platform
standards:
-
UDDI for Java (UDDI4J), which enables businesses to describe themselves,
publish technical specs on how they want to conduct e-business with other
companies, and search for other businesses that provide goods and
services they need, all via online UDDI registries
-
SOAP, which is a standard for reliably transporting electronic business
messages from one business application to another over the Internet
-
WSDL, which describes programs accessible via the Internet (or other
networks), and the message formats and protocols used to communicate with
them
Visual XML Development Environment
Site Developer Advanced provides a comprehensive visual XML development
environment. The XML tool set includes components for building DTDs, XML
schemas and XML files. The tools enable you to visually step through an
XSL transformation script. They also support integration of relational
data with XML.
With Site Developer Advanced, you can:
-
Create, view, and validate DTDs and XML schemas
-
Create XML documents from a DTD

-
Generate a document access definition (DAD) script, used by DB2®
-
XML Extender, to either compose XML documents from existing DB2 data or
decompose XML documents into DB2 data
-
Generate XML and related artifacts from SQL statements and use these
files to implement your query in other applications, for example, a
servlet or JSP
Java IDE

environment with the following capabilities:
-
JDK 1.3 support
-
Pluggable run-time support for JDK switching and targeting multiple
run-time environments from IBM and other vendors

Database Tools
The SQL wizard and SQL query builder provide a visual interface for
creating and executing SQL statements. You can use the SQL to XML wizard
to create an XML document as well as XSL, DTD, XSD, HTML files, and other
related artifacts, then use the files to implement your query in other
applications, for example, a servlet or JSP. You can create a simple
query using the SQL wizard, or you can use the SQL query builder that
supports a wider range of statements.
The RSC is a visual tool used to define the mapping between one or more
relational tables and an XML document. It lets you create, browse, or
import database schemas. You can explore, import, design, and query
databases, working with either a local copy of an already deployed
design, or creating an entirely new design to meet your requirements
These database tools offer support for several databases, including DB2,
DB2 for 400, DB2 for 390, Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, Informix, and SQL
Server.
Unit Test Environment
A unit-test environment where you can test JSP files, Java classes,
servlets, and HTML files. The capability to configure other local or
