DFSMS/MVS Optimizer

The Optimizer contains two features: the Performance Analyzer and the Management Class Analyzer.

Optimizer Performance Analyzer: The Performance Analyzer allows you to analyze performance data for your subsystems, cache, NVS, back paths, volumes, and data sets. Using the data from the Analyzer, you can determine the causes of performance problems such as device skew, I/O constraints, or I/O intensive periods (for example, batch windows). With this information, you can make informed decisions about capacity planning, isolate I/O performance problems, and perform what-if cache simulations for subsystems in the sysplex.

The Performance Analyzer also helps you analyze System-Managed Storage (SMS) storage class policy usage. For example, with the information gained by using the Performance Analyzer you can pose and answer questions, such as:

  • What is the average millisecond response time (MSR) for each storage class, compared to the actual response time for data sets with that policy?
  • Are there inconsistencies between the attribute settings for each storage class and the data sets with that policy?

The Performance Analyzer has two major sources of input:

  • Volume level performance data from Resource Measurement Facility (RMF™) or Cache RMF Reporter (CRR)

Type 74 records (from RMF) contain volume-level performance statistics. These records are written to System Measurement Facility (SMF) from each system ID in the sysplex. Type 245 records are from the CRR. The CRR started task runs on one MVS system, collects subsystem and volume caching statistics from all subsystems, then writes them to SMF. CRR is included with the Optimizer. These records contain subsystem and volume caching statistics. By combining these inputs, the Performance Analyzer builds a complete picture of DASD and cache I/O statistics, and relevant configuration information.

  • Data set level performance data (from type 42, subtype 6 SMF records)

SMF type 42 records contain data set level DASD I/O and cache statistics. In DFSMS/MVS 1.1 and later, these records are produced at every SMF interval, or whenever a data set is closed, from each system ID in the sysplex for both SMS and non-SMS managed data sets. Therefore, your data set statistics are averaged over a period of 10 — 15 minutes. For DFSMS/MVS 1.1 and later, the SMS-produced address space must be active in order to create SMF type 42, each subtype 6 records. (Although the SMS address space must be active, you do not have to be managing data with SMS to generate the type 42 SMF records.)

Optimizer Management Class Analyzer: The Management Class Analyzer provides cost-benefit analysis and what-if simulations of management class policies. With this analyzer, you input your storage costs when you run a report.

The Management Class Analyzer provides what-if simulations of management class parameters for SMS and non-SMS data. You can also use the Analyzer to predict the amount of level 0 (L0) and migration level 1 (ML1) storage required if you use a new set of migration attributes.

Additionally, you can use the Management Class Analyzer to determine the most cost-effective management class assignments for data sets you want to convert to SMS. You can also use the Management Class Analyzer to tune your current management class settings to reduce possible HSM thrashing.

StorWatch DFSMS HSM Monitor

The HSM Monitor provides the ability to monitor the activities of one or more HSM systems either through an online TCP/IP connection to an active system or by playing back a log file previously created by a host HSM Monitor session. In addition to HSM monitoring, the workstation can be used to issue HSM commands, cancel HSM tasks, and modify the trigger thresholds used to control HSM activity.

In addition, the HSM Monitor can automatically monitor and tune HSM systems through the use of more than 150 trigger events (more than 80 of which are threshold-based) that invoke REXX automation routines. These execs can be customized to issue commands directly to the host that triggers the event, to issue NetView alerts, or other functions you specify as an automated response to the event.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone

Value Unit Based Pricing

Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products to the principle of the Parallel Sysplex License Charge (PSLC) pricing curve which provides for a lower price per millions of service units per hour (MSU) for larger capacities.

There is also a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will be based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, that is, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.

IPLA and Subscription and Support Considerations

International Program License Agreement (IPLA) licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the Entitlement of the Product License.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the Product License entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product Positioning

The TotalStorage Management Toolkit is an integral part of IBM's TotalStorage family of storage solutions. IBM has created a "suite" of storage management software solutions for the z/OS environment. By creating this conveniently packaged toolkit, z/OS users now have a single repository of storage management tools to consider for their own specific needs. These tools are specifically targeted to help you increase the availability, boost the performance, and enhance the productivity of your storage assets so they can be more responsive, helping to better meet your corporate IT objectives. It is expected that additional products that provide similar storage management benefits will be added to the Toolkit over time.

S&S = Subscription and Support

The products in this announcement have one charge unit — Value Units.

Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390®-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370™, System/390® and IBM e(logo)server zSeries Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901).

Value Units for zSeries will be based upon full MSU capacity as defined in the Machine Exhibits.

There will be a tool available that provides support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of S/390 systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs.
