Description
CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer for z/OS operates in CICS,
reducing the number of characters transmitted to supported devices by
making optimum use of all available orders for each device type. CICS
Online Transmission Time Optimizer keeps the screen layout of
conversational terminals in memory so that only changed data is
transmitted. CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer can also reduce the
contention between the devices on a communications line and between
devices connected to local controllers, helping to improve response times
because messages arrive quicker at each device.
CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer uses the following optimization
techniques:
-
Repetitive character elimination for 3270-type terminals and printers
-
Transmission of only changed data for 3270-type terminals
-
Blank elimination for 3270 SNA Character Set (SCS) printers
-
String Control Byte (SCB) compression for 3600/4700 type terminals
CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer provides the system administrator
the following controls:
-
Exclusion list for terminals and modules
The exclusion list lets you exclude any terminal or module from
optimization. For example, you can use the exclusion list to:
-
Exclude terminals that are running specific applications
-
Exclude terminals dynamically, while the CICS Online Transmission Time
Optimizer is running
-
Selection list for terminals and modules
The selection list allows you to select specific terminals or modules you
want to include in optimization. For example, you can use this list to:
-
Include a few terminals or modules, while you verify the correct
installation
-
Include terminals or modules dynamically, while the CICS Online
Transmission Time Optimizer is running
-
Customized control with user exits
This feature gives you even more control over optimization functions.
This user exit is called every time a message is about to be optimized
and also after optimization. The user exit may be used to:
-
Process specific messages unchanged by controlling the optimization using
return codes
-
Keep parts of the messages and to insert these fields again after
optimization
-
Change characters for specific countries
The operation of CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer is transparent
to the users as the product automatically starts up and shuts down with
CICS.
CICS Online Transmission Time Optimizer monitors its own operations and
tells you how effective its optimization is in your environment by
continually monitoring operations and reporting its own progress on
demand. Operational statistics may be displayed on a screen or written
to the console. At system shut down, statistics can be optionally
written to the console or a file.
All controls and settings can be entered on a temporary or permanent
basis. Permanent controls are still active at the next start-up and
temporary controls are effective only during the current start-up.

Value Unit Based Pricing
Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these products
to the principle of the Parallel Sysplex® License Charge (PSLC) pricing
curve which provides for a lower price per millions of service units per
hour (MSU) for larger capacities.
There will also be a price benefit when customers grow their capacity.
Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the
customer has already installed, that is, additional capacity will not be
priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the
capacity that is already installed.
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be
exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another product.
International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and
Support Considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but
not limited to, an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity
for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more
economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It
is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value
Units within the limits of the Entitlement of the Product License.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the Product
License entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the
country in which the agreement is made.

The products in this announcement have one charge unit Value Units.
Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity
of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390-based systems that are
measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in
the IBM System/370, System/390® and zSeries Machine Exhibit
(Z125-3901).
Value Units for IBM zSeries will be based upon full MSU
capacity as defined in the Machine Exhibits .
There will be a tool available that provides support for transforming the
MSU-based capacities of S/390 Systems to new Value Units by calculating
the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs.
Ordering Example
The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following
example.
If the customer has installed 1000 MSUs, the applicable Value Units would
be:
Translation from MSUs to Value Units
Value
Units/ Value
MSUs * MSU = Units
Base 3 * 1.00 = 3.00
Tier A 42 * 0.45 = 18.90
Tier B 130 * 0.36 = 46.80
Tier C 140 * 0.27 = 37.80
Tier D 685 * 0.20 = 137.00
Total 1,000 244
When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be
rounded up to the next integer.
1 Value Unit 0001
250 Value Units 0002
For a product running on machines with 1000 MSUs requiring 244 Value
Units, the customer would order feature number 0001, quantity 244.
