Overview

The Tivoli® Web performance management offering, Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7, is being expanded to include enterprise application performance management (EAPM). This function is provided by including a new level of Tivoli Application Performance Management, the premier Tivoli enterprise application performance management program product. The new, more comprehensive offering will address the performance management of both Web-based applications and enterprise applications to help provide an end-to-end performance and availability solution. There are a number of enhancements focused on addressing a wider range of e-business and enterprise transactions, ease of use, and industry standards. A no-charge upgrade to Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7 is provided for current customers of Tivoli Application Performance Management (5697-APM and 5698-APM).

Also announced today is the support for nine additional languages by Tivoli Web Services Analyzer. These same languages are also provided in Tivoli Web Services Manager.

Web Performance Management Enhancements

Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7 include the following performance and availability enhancements in the area of e-business transaction monitoring.

Synthetic Transaction Investigator Improvements (STI): As more content on the Web becomes dynamic in nature, performance and availability tools should be able to easily monitor a number of different types of dynamic content while not increasing the skill requirements of the administrative and operations staff. This release of Tivoli Web Services Manager improves the ability of the Synthetic Transaction Investigator (STI) to work with client side generated dynamic content, and can help eliminate the need for the administrator to perform customization.

Correlation Reporting: In WebSphere™ environments where WebSphere Site Analyzer is deployed, Tivoli Web Services Manager can now provide reporting that correlates the performance metrics from Tivoli Web Services Manager with the Web metrics from WebSphere Site Analyzer. These correlated reports can show how Web site traffic is affecting Web site performance.

More Granular Administrative Roles: In organizations where different people will be responsible for different components of the Tivoli Web Services Manager, it is now possible to define administrators with unique administrative responsibilities. This will limit the functions that each administrator can perform.

End of Support

Based on the Tivoli end-of-support policy, Tivoli support for Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.6 and Tivoli Web Services Analyzer V1.6 will be discontinued December 7, 2002, which is 12 months after the planned availability date of V1.7.

Description

Key Prerequisites

The programs in this announcement are supported on the following systems:

  • IBM RS/6000® with AIX®
  • Intel-based systems with Microsoft™ Windows NT® or Windows® 2000
  • Sun SPARC systems with Solaris

Web Performance Management

New in Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7

  • Synthetic Transaction Investigator (STI) improvements for dynamic content include:
    • Client side JavaScript — in this release, STI will support the record and playback of transactions that use client side JavaScript. For example, if client-side session IDs are created using JavaScript, these transactions can now be recorded and played back without customization by the administrator.
    • Improved reliability of STI transactions — in STI V1.6, server-generated session-IDs required customization by the administrator. These IDs can now be recorded and played back without the need for administrator customization of properties files. This enhancement also helps to reduce skill requirements for administrators.
    • Improved support for Web proxies — each STI transaction can use a defined HTTP or SOCKS proxy and when an STI transaction runs on multiple endpoints, each endpoint can use a different proxy.
    • Support for meta-tags — if a transaction requires the use of meta-tags, these tags can now be followed using STI V1.7.
    • More accurate reporting of overall transaction response time — when playing back transactions using STI, the aggregate image download time can now be recorded as part of the overall transaction response time.
  • Correlation reporting with WebSphere Site Analyzer 4.0 — if Tivoli Web Services Manager and WebSphere Site Analyzer are both installed, a set of correlated reports will be available using data from each product. Tivoli Web Services Manager can provide reports that use the performance information it collects and the Web server log file metrics from WebSphere Site Analyzer. These correlation reports can show the effect that Web site traffic and data downloads are having on Web site performance. This information can be valuable in analyzing the capacity of Web servers and can be used to identify potential performance problems. If WebSphere Site Analyzer is not installed, these reports can be generated through the use of data from Tivoli Web Services Analyzer and Tivoli Web Services Manager.
  • More granular administrative roles — can help improve security and support delegated administration. Instead of a single administrative role, V1.7 will allow administrators to be defined for each component. There can be administrators for QoS, STI record, STI playback, Site Investigator (SI) and log collection. This allows the administrative capability to be limited to a particular role or a set of roles per user.
  • Self-updating endpoints — can make updates easy. Each endpoint can be updated so that future release and patches may only need to be loaded onto the Tivoli Internet Management Server (TIMS). When the TIMS is updated, the system endpoints will update themselves automatically. This may eliminate the need to manually update each of the endpoints and can save considerable time and expense for large installations.
  • Ability to configure QoS for service time only reporting — in V1.7 the administrator can configure QoS to only report on the backend service time metric. This can eliminate the need for requests to be instrumented with JavaScript before they are sent back to the client. This option can be chosen during the scheduling of a QoS job.
  • Ability to choose GMT or a user-selected time zone for reporting and User Interface (UI) functions — helps improve product usability for installations within a single time zone. The administrator will be able to select either GMT or a time zone of their choice for the reporting and UI functions.

Both the new Tivoli Web Services Manager offering and the new Tivoli Web Services Analyzer offering now support:

  • Integration with the Tivoli Web Component Manager. When installing Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7 and/or Tivoli Web Services Analyzer V1.7 and Tivoli Web Component Manager, only a single management server and database is required. This set of products makes use of a common set of services that are administered through a common Web-based user interface. This can reduce the need to install additional hardware as new products are added, and can enable administrators to work virtually seamlessly between the products.
  • National Language Support

Both the new release of Tivoli Web Services Manager and the new release of Tivoli Web Services Analyzer provide language translation. It will be enabled for all single-byte and double-byte languages. The following languages are provided worldwide on the distribution media. Customers may select the appropriate language at product installation.

    • Brazilian Portuguese
    • Chinese — Simplified
    • Chinese — Traditional (Mandarin)
    • English
    • French
    • German
    • Italian
    • Japanese
    • Korean
    • Spanish

Enterprise Application Performance Management (EAPM)

EAPM is provided by the inclusion of a new, more comprehensive function level of the Tivoli Application Performance Management program product within the Tivoli Web Services Manager offering. The enhancements to Tivoli Application Performance Management, exclusively in Tivoli Web Services Manager, can help:

  • Enable you to trace a user transaction in order to break down the total response time into its component parts, and to see the path that the transaction took through the infrastructure. This is achieved with Application Response Measurement (ARM) Transaction Correlation, a part of the ARM application program interface (API) standard.
  • Provide new performance probe technology — probes are available for Lotus Notes® and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) transactions, to provide you a view of typical end-user response time.
  • The powerful application response time measurement, in Tivoli Application Performance Management program product, is now included in Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7. The application response time measurement function implements ARM Version 2 Transaction Correlation, which is exclusive to Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7.

The ARM API is a public standard, developed by The Open Group. It defines how application code can be instrumented with "start" and "stop" API calls, in order to measure response time. These measurements can be made in any application component; on a client, a server, or a database server.

ARM Version 2 Transaction Correlation ties together these measurements so that the response time can be broken down into its component parts.

Transaction simulation can be used to run a real user transaction from a "robotic client" machine. Ideally, the machine should run the same transaction as a real user, on the same network, accessing the same server, and so it should receive, and record, typical user response time.

The new performance probe technology includes a set of new probes for Lotus Notes and IMAP transactions. These probes perform typical end-user actions for which the response time is measured. This is in addition to EAPM's capability to run Mercury Interactive LoadRunner scripts in which end-user transactions may have been recorded.

Additional Enhancements

This new release of Tivoli Web Services Manager also aids an administrators' productivity by helping to enable them to:

  • Configure QoS for service time only reporting
  • Configure the reporting function and user interface to use Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or a time specified by the administrator
  • Use self-updating endpoints
  • Integrate the software with Tivoli Web Component Manager (5698-WCM)

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • The contents of scripts are accessible by keyboard
  • Frame titles allow tracking of frames by title
  • Web pages are readable without requiring style sheets
  • Information is conveyed without dependence on color

Euro Currency

These programs are not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

Both Tivoli Web Services Manager and Tivoli Web Services Analyzer are intended for large- and medium-sized companies that are:

  • Planning to connect to the Internet
  • Expanding their use of the Internet by deploying more Web-based applications
  • Deploying an extranet to connect Business Partners, remote employees, and customers

Statement of Direction

The Synthetic Transaction Investigator function of Tivoli Web Services Manager V1.7 will be enhanced with the Page Analyzer Viewer in first half 2002. The Page Analyzer Viewer provides visualization of the performance of web page downloads, showing decomposition of the Web page into its component parts (for example, HTML, GIFs, Applets) and the activities involved in retrieving them.

The Page Analyzer Viewer function will begin a beta program in fourth quarter 2001.

Passport Advantage allows you to have a common anniversary date for Software Maintenance renewals. This makes it easier for you to manage and budget for access to eligible new versions and releases, and for related technical support, for your covered products. The anniversary date, established at the start of your Passport Advantage Agreement, recurs on an annual basis while your Passport Advantage Agreement remains in effect. However, regardless of when Software Maintenance is acquired, the coverage period for Software Maintenance is always up to the anniversary date specified in the acquisition.

Software Maintenance renewals offer you favorable pricing to continue your coverage without interruption.

Refer to the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement and to the IBM Software Maintenance Handbook for specific terms relating to, and a more complete description of, technical support provided through Software Maintenance.

Note: The Tivoli Select Support offering is not available under Passport Advantage. Contact you IBM or Tivoli service representative for information on separately available service offerings.
