WebSphere MQ Integrator

WebSphere MQ Integrator technology is a powerful information broker that selects and distributes information to the applications, databases, and people who need it.

Users can implement realtime, application-to-application message transformation and intelligent message routing quickly and easily. It is flexible so applications can be added, extended, or replaced within information flows.

WebSphere MQ Integrator is a cross-platform middleware application integration engine — a powerful information broker — that manages:

  • Business information integration
  • Application integration
  • Integration of external applications
  • Integrated Application Data with business data, builds dynamic distribution mechanism for information for users to subscribe to applications.
  • Visualization of application flow through the use of a graphical development environment
  • MQSeries Integrator working closely with relational databases to augment messages and also to warehouse data
  • Distribution of messages using a dynamic publish/subscribe mechanism that enables the subscriber to filter messages based on content
  • MQSeries Integrator exploiting the transactional control offered by WebSphere MQ to provide end-to-end transactional integrity between applications

MQSeries Integrator is architected with a library of nodes produced by IBM and delivered with the product. In addition, further plug-in nodes and parsers can be downloaded.

Customers, Business Partners, or other third parties may add to these functions by developing further plug-ins, which may be used with this open framework concept.

WebSphere MQ Integrator uses MQSeries to send and receive messages between applications. With WebSphere MQ Integrator, operations are performed on the messages. These operations could include:

  • Filtering
  • Computational (based on message content)
  • Augmenting messages from business data
  • Applying a variety of rules and routing functions, including publish and subscribe

Message formats can be self-defining, using XML, or defined using an IBM-provided format repository or third-party message dictionaries. Predefined templates mean WebSphere MQ Integrator for z/OS V2.1 can exchange information with major packaged applications.

Features of WebSphere MQ Integrator for z/OS V2.1

Improved Message Repository Manager (MRM): WebSphere MQ Integrator for z/OS V2.1 includes a new version of the MRM with significantly enhanced support for XML messages and support for industry-standard, "tag-delimited" message formats such as SWIFT, EDI, and AL3 (ACORD).

Extensions to the Logical Model

  • Explicit cardinal attributes — MRM 2 supports four basic cardinal attributes (one, one or more, one or zero, zero or more) plus the ability to extend this to cardinal attributes such as (more than two and less than six).
  • Sequence and choice — Compound types have a composition property that defines how they are composed of their type members. In a sequence, the type members (if present) must appear in the order specified. In a choice, at most one of the type members can appear.
  • OrderedSet and UnorderedSet — Two further composition types required for XML modeling allow compound types to be composed of other types. This is to allow modeling of DTD elements whose content specs include parentheses; for example, (A,B) | (C,D).
  • Support for ANY, EMPTY, and MIXED element content.
  • XML attribute support — allows XML attributes to be modeled as child elements. This also implies that a compound type can have a value of its own (previously only simple types held values).
  • Support for DATE/TIME/DATETIME datatypes.
  • More than one CWF format may be defined per message set.
  • Application Header — A structure may be specified to be used as an application header for all messages in the set. Many XML message sets are designed in a header/body pattern. Distinguishing a header in this way allows MQSeries Integrator to read the header in order to ascertain the MessageType of the body.
  • User-definable properties — A message designer can add new attribute/value pairs for an element or type modeled in the MRM. These properties are accessible at runtime.

New XML Mapping Layer: A new "XML layer" in the data model allows the following aspects of the mapping between the logical model and physical XML to be defined:

  • Control whether XML descriptors and doctype are generated or not and control their content
  • Customize the XML root element name to allow messages other than native MRM messages to be modeled
  • Identify or specify an element name or value in the XML as containing the Message Type identifier
  • Identify the XML element and attribute names to be used for child elements (unless defined in this layer), the default is to use the logical model's element identifier
  • Render logical datatypes into their physical representation in the XML (particularly the rendering of DATE/TIME/ DATETIME), which can also be customized

In addition, the range of supported identifiers includes any valid XML element name, without the ":" character (in other words, it must start with a letter or underscore and can continue with letters, digits, underscores, hyphens, or full stops).

Tagged Format Support: A new Tag Wire Format (TWF) layer in the message model allows the physical mapping to be defined for tag-delimited strings:

  • Tag indicator — A reserved string that delimits the start of a tagged value
  • Tag Terminator — A reserved string that delimits the end of a tagged value
  • Tag separator — A reserved string that separates the tag from its field
  • Continuation character — Indicates the continuation of field data onto a new line
  • Escape character — Used so that special reserved characters (such as delimiters) can be included as part of data
  • Reserved characters — String that specifies special reserved characters that must be preceded by the escape character if they are to be included as part of the data
  • Message-begin delimiter — Special reserved character used to indicate start of a message body
  • Message-end delimiter — Special reserved character used to indicate end of a message body

Specializations of this TWF layer are provided with preset values for:

  • SWIFT (ISO 15022)
  • EDI — X.12 (ISO 9735) and EDIFACT

Enhanced Support for Plug-in Node Developers: The plug-in node API enables customers and Business Partners to write additional input nodes for WebSphere MQ Integrator for z/OS V2.1.

A new set of Java objects and classes is provided to support the development and deployment of plug-in nodes written in Java. This new interface provides access to the full range of function required for the development of new plug-in nodes.

New ESQL Features: The ESQL nodes (Compute, Database, DataInsert, DataUpdate, and DataDelete) are rationalized to support a consistent set of capabilities and functions. A number of new features in the ESQL engine in WebSphere MQ Integrator for z/OS V2.1 include:

  • Environment support
  • UUID function
  • Field reference variables
  • Binary casting
  • Date/time casting SQLCODE and SQLSTATE

Drag-and-drop capability is improved in the corresponding node customizers.

Other Improvements

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Value Unit Based Pricing

Value Unit based pricing will help to align the prices of these Products to the principle of the PSLC pricing curve which provides for a lower price per MSU (millions of service units per hour) for larger capacities.

There is also be a price benefit when customers grow their capacity. Additional capacity will based on the number of Value Units (MSUs) the customer has already installed, that is, additional capacity will not be priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit but on the capacity that is already installed.

Note that Value Units of a given Product cannot be exchanged/interchanged/aggregated with Value Units of another Product.

IPLA and Subscription and Support Considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the Product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer's responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the Entitlement of the Product License.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the Product License entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product Positioning

Integration is fundamental to business. You need to integrate applications both existing and new to realize your e-business goals.

The MQSeries Integrator represents the IBM response to this market need.

The WebSphere MQ Integrator initiative addresses business and application integration by helping you manage information flow with:

  • Integrate existing applications to existing or new applications
  • Visualize the application flow with a graphical development environment
  • Transform, augment, apply rules to and route/distribute message based data between high-performance systems
  • Deploy, configure, and manage application integration flows requiring multiple run-times

System connectivity is typically enhanced into application integration by developers who write code to capture, evaluate, translate, and reformat data from source applications to a format understood by destination applications.

This can be simplified at design, development, and maintenance stages by using MQ Integrator, rather than traditional programming techniques, saving both time and effort.

Positioning with Business Process Management

The WebSphere platform for e-business includes business process management (BPM) products and solutions that help integrate a single department or pervade the entire enterprise, reaching across business channels, trading partners and Web customers. Eight key BPM elements, which can be combined selectively or built up, one upon the other, to provide more powerful and efficient integration:

  • MQSeries, which integrates over 35 platforms, provides the base messaging functions for servers and clients, and assures once-only message delivery.
  • MQSeries Everyplace brings the benefits of assured message delivery and dependable security to the failure-prone environment of mobile working.

  • WebSphere Business Integrator provides an end-to-end business process integration solution. which leverages all the products listed above, enabling the creation, execution, and management of processes that span diverse applications and enterprises.

Positioning with WebSphere Transcoding Publisher

  • WebSphere Transcoding Publisher is primarily focused on transforming Web-based content so that it can be delivered to a variety of client environments and devices according to the capability of the device, type of connection, and customized selections.

For example, WebSphere Transcoding Publisher can transform and adapt XML- and HTML-based documents and images to many target environments.

  • MQSeries Integrator is mainly used to process server-to-server messages, including processing field contents to determine routing, perform calculations, or check validity. MQSeries Integrator uses a variety of message formats including XML.

MQSeries Integrator and WebSphere Transcoding Publisher can work together to extend your business-to-business integration to new environments, such as pervasive devices.

For example, MQSeries Integrator could be used alongside WebSphere Transcoding Publisher to deal directly with HTML-based pages, which need both reformatting and routing.

Value Units for IBM 9672 Processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390®-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370™, System/390® and zSeries Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901).

Value Units for zSeries are based upon full MSU capacity as defined in the Machine Exhibits.

A tool available will provide support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of S/390 systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs.

Translation from MSUs to Value Units Example

Translation from MSUs to Value Units

                  MSUs Value Units/MSU
Base 1-3 1.00
Tier A 4-45 .45
Tier B 46-175 .36
Tier C 176-315 .27
Tier D 316+ .20

Note: For the actual translation from MSUs to Value Units for this product, refer below.

Ordering Example: The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following example:

If the customer has installed 1000 MSUs the applicable Value Units would be:

| | Translation from MSUs to Value Units |
| | MSUs * Value Units/MSU = Value Units|
|Base | 3 * 1.00 = 3.00 |
|Tier A | 42 * .45 = 18.90 |
|Tier B | 130 * .36 = 46.80 |
|Tier C | 140 * .27 = 37.80 |
|Tier D | 685 * .20 = 137.00 |
|Total | 1000 243.50 |

When calculating the total number of Value Units the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.

1 Value Unit 0001
250 Value Units 0002

Example: For a product running on machines with 1000 MSUs requiring 243.50 Value Units, would order feature number 0001, quantity 244.

Note: For actual feature numbers, refer below.
