Overview

WebSphere™ Voice Server for Windows® 2000 and AIX®, V 2.0:

  • Provides speech recognition and speech synthesis (Text-To-Speech) software for developing and deploying applications that can be used over a telephone
  • Leverages existing telephony and Web infrastructures to enable easy voice access to WebSphere e-business applications

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 includes:

  • Speech recognition software that can listen to words spoken over a telephone, recognizes these words, and passes the recognized words as text to an application
  • Text-To-Speech software that synthesizes speech from application text for playback over a telephone
  • Connection to many telephony platforms, including WebSphere Voice Response for AIX (formerly known as DirectTalk® for AIX), Intel Dialogic, and Cisco
  • Development tools, including support for applications written in VoiceXML, Java™ Beans, or C
  • Complimentary copies of the following products:
    • WebSphere Voice Toolkit, which includes a VoiceXML editor, grammar editor, and a pronunciation builder, allows application developers to easily add voice technology to middleware applications.
    • WebSphere Voice Server Software Developers Kit (SDK), which provides tools for prototyping VoiceXML applications on a PC without a telephony server, provides the necessary speech recognition and TTS engines for testing applications developed with WebSphere Voice Toolkit or Studio.

Description

The WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is a software product, which can be integrated with other software and hardware telephony products, to speech-enable these products.

A customer using an application developed with WebSphere Voice Server places a telephone call from either a landline or mobile phone.

  • A telephony server answers this telephone call, which is a PC or UNIX® server with special telephony hardware that allows it to answer telephone calls.
  • The telephony server is also running WebSphere Voice Server, which listens to the user speaking and recognizes words.
  • These recognized words are then passed to the application, running on WebSphere Application Server, which performs the desired transaction and sends the resulting text back to WebSphere Voice Server.
  • WebSphere Voice Server then uses the text to synthesize speech, which the telephony server routes back to the handset where the caller can hear it.

The WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 can be used for the following purposes:

  • Software server application built on open industry standards that enables businesses to voice-enable existing Web applications

    This will allow customers access to voice-enabled Web applications by using a telephone.

  • Voice-enable existing DTMF and pre-recorded audio IVR applications with Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech capabilities

VoiceXML Browser that Supports A Conversational User Interface

  • Capability for callers to select from a spoken menu

    The VoiceXML browser supports a "Say What You Hear" algorithm for selecting items from a menu.

    • The VoiceXML browser speaks the menu choices.
    • Users can say the menu items that they already heard and any other menu items that are about to be spoken (a feature for expert users).

  • Capability for callers to fill in forms and submit data to Web-based applications

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is a voice application enabler, which services two types of users, system administrators, and telephone callers. WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 provides the following accessibility features for each of those user groups:

  • System Administrators
    • Does not interfere with keyboard accessibility features built into the operating system
    • Offers text through standard system function calls or through an API (application programming interface), which supports interaction with assistive technology
    • Provides documentation in an accessible format
  • Telephone Callers (End Users)
    • WebSphere Voice Server offers the capability of providing people with no or low vision and manual disabilities access to business data and services using telephone user interfaces.

Product Positioning

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is a speech middleware software product that replaces several products.

For Speech Enabling Web sites, it replaces WebSphere Voice Server V1.5, ViaVoice™ Speech Recognition for AIX, DirectTalk Text-To-Speech for AIX, and WebSphere Voice Server for DirectTalk.

Notes

  • WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 does not replace WebSphere Voice Server for DirectTalk Windows V1.5 and DirectTalk Speech Recognition on Windows and DirectTalk Text-To-Speech on Windows — all of which support DirectTalk for Windows Version 3.0. These products are still available and are ordered separately.
  • For Speech Enabling IVR applications, WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 replaces ViaVoice Speech Recognition for AIX and DirectTalk Text-To-Speech for AIX.

Limitations

When used with Dialogic and Cisco Telephony Environments

If the ViaVoice desktop product is installed on the target system, it must be uninstalled before installing this package.

WebSphere Voice Response for AIX Environment

WebSphere Voice Response uses a VoiceXML browser application packaged with WebSphere Voice Response. VoiceXML uses application stored on a Web server instead of applications stored on DirectTalk. Therefore, it does not use DirectTalk SSI environment for managing applications.

DirectTalk Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech ViaVoice Features, which WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is replacing, must be uninstalled prior to migrating to WebSphere Voice Response 2.3 and installing this package on a WebSphere Voice Response system.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: It is the customer's responsibility to provide a technician with telephony platform expertise to set up the telephony environment and configure the gateways.

It is strongly recommended that planning and implementation of WebSphere Voice Server be done with an integration agreement with IBM Global Services or other capable service provider. Contact your IBM Voice Systems representative for more information.

Packaging: WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is shipped in nineteen separate Passport Advantage media pack packages of which it is necessary to order a minimum of two:

  • One containing the base WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 code
  • A minimum of one language product to provide the desired language support for Speech Recognition and Formant TTS
  • If Concatenative TTS is desired then the correct language product containing the Concatenative TTS product

Security, Auditability, and Control

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 uses the security and auditability features of the respective operating systems.

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 in support of the Cisco and Intel Dialogic Telephony platforms supports the Secure Sockets Layer Version 3.0 protocol.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0 is a stand-alone product with one charge unit per processor. It is available in units of one. A "One Processor Entitlement" is required for each processor that the product is run on.

WebSphere Voice Server for Windows 2000 and AIX, V2.0, (part number BL004NA) provides the base function and must be ordered in all instances except when Concatenative Text-To-Speech is purchased and used as a standalone product. This base function provides the function for Voice Server used with the WebSphere Voice Response for AIX telephony platform, Voice Server when used with the Intel Dialogic telephony platform, and Voice Server when used with the Cisco telephony platform. These base products require that at a minimum a second product is ordered to provide the appropriate language support for the speech recognition and formant TTS function. In addition, in some cases a third product may be desired to provide Concatenative TTS support. The table below is provided as an aid to help identify the correct language and TTS products that work with the available platforms.
