Overview

Tivoli's Workload Scheduler is a suite of programs that includes:

  • Tivoli® Workload Scheduler for z/OS™ (previously named Tivoli Operations Planning and Control)
  • Tivoli Workload Scheduler (previously named Maestro)
  • Tivoli Job Scheduling Console, our Java™-based graphical user interface

Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS

Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS enhances the abilities of Tivoli Operations Planning and Control 2.3 by adding the following:

  • Serviceability improvements
  • Performance improvements
  • More accurate planning capability
  • Catalog management
  • Removable media manager integration

Tivoli Workload Scheduler

Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.1 extends the functions of Tivoli Workload Scheduler 7.0 by adding "OPC-like" features, such as free-day rule planning and multiple "free day" or holiday calendars. Serviceability, scalability, performance, and usability are also being enhanced in this new version.

Starting with this new version, both Tivoli Workload Scheduler and Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS will use the common scheduling agent technology, formerly found only in Tivoli Workload Scheduler, to provide full workload management capabilities with:

  • Operation system integration
  • Multi-tier network architecture
  • Performance
  • True fault-tolerance

The fault-tolerant agent is available on Windows® 2000 and several distributions of Linux, including SuSe Linux S/390®.

Tivoli Workload Scheduler is integrated with Tivoli Business Systems Manager (TBSM), bringing line-of-business views, monitoring of key jobs, start and stop time tracking, and deadline prediction to the TBSM console.

Tivoli Job Scheduling Console

The new Tivoli Job Scheduling Console has many additional capabilities and added ease-of-use for the planner and the operator. Job streams are easier to define, with fewer actions required. Rows within most views have sorting capabilities.

Best of all, a new common query group has been added to the Job Scheduling Console. From this group, queries containing jobs or job streams from multiple engines (for example, multiple distributed and mainframe controllers) can be created, allowing multiple objects to be managed from a single view. Each query can have many filtering mechanisms (name, priority, status, and so on). This will allow the create queries such as "show me all jobs in error, regardless of scheduling engine or location."

Key Prerequisites

A supported UNIX® or Windows operating system and supporting hardware platform.

Refer to the Technical Information section for more detailed requirements.

Planned Availability Date

October 26, 2001

End of Support

Based on the Tivoli end of support policy, Tivoli support for Tivoli Workload Scheduler Version 7.0 will be discontinued 12 months after the planned availability of Version 8.1.

Description

New in Version 8.1

  • Many functional enhancements to the Job Scheduling Console which help provide improved usability and graphical presentations
  • Integration with Tivoli Business Systems Manager
  • Improved scheduling for holidays through "free day" rules and local holiday calendars for centralized management
  • SuSe Linux S/390 platform support

Starting with this release, both Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) and TWS for z/OS will use the common scheduling agent technology, formerly found only in TWS, to provide full workload management capabilities with:

  • Operation system integration
  • Multi-tier network architecture
  • Performance
  • True fault-tolerance

TWS provides a single point of control for open workload management and uses open interfaces to enable communications with UNIX, Windows, AS/400®, and OS/390® operating environments. It extends the scope for integrated systems management with the TWS Extended Agent Interface. TWS Extended Agents enable you to manage workload on non-TWS platforms and ERP Applications.

Centralized workload management, provided by TWS, helps reduce the need for skilled personnel at remote locations and helps you cost-effectively manage your distributed systems.

In addition, TWS Version 8.1 offers the following serviceability, scalability, and performance enhancements:

  • Improved Java-based GUI console that can simultaneously manage both TWS Distributed and z/OS networks, thereby helping to reduce operations staffing, training, and expertise requirements
  • Supports ten languages, allowing you to work in a familiar, native environment
  • Helps improve your ability to manage systems across multiple time zones by attributing the appropriate time zone to each workstation
  • Logs changes made to the TWS database or plan to a log file for auditing and security purposes

The Job Scheduling Console

The Job Scheduling Console is a Java-based multiplatform interface for configuring, viewing, and modifying all aspects of workload planning at your site. From the Job Scheduling Console, you can:

  • Create database objects, such as, workstations, workstation classes, jobs, job streams, calendars, parameters, resources, prompts, domains, and users. These are the building blocks used to create and organize your workload plan.
  • Schedule your jobs and job streams to create a plan for job execution, using the many different TWS job dependency types.
  • Monitor the execution of all your jobs and job streams.
  • Modify the execution of all your jobs and job streams, by adding, modifying, or deleting jobs or job streams in the plan.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

For software offerings:

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone
  • Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings
  • Screen readers and screen magnifiers tested for use by people with visual impairment
  • Speech recognition products tested for use by people with mobility impairment
  • Optional display of audio alerts for people with hearing impairment

The S/390 (z/OS and OS/390) software components of TWS will ship via Customized Offerings (that is, ServerPac, Systempac®, CBPDO).

PA customers ordering these S/390 products will specify a NC Custom Build Registration OS/390 part number rather than the PA Media Pac.

Customers continuing to order the 5698-WKB S/390 products outside of PA will specify a NC feature code.

In either case, the customer will be contacted by an IBM country representative to complete the customization order details. To order any of the S/390 Tivoli products, select the CBPDO Customized Offering. The Configurator will then present a catalog for product selection and will generate the appropriate feature numbers based on the selections made during the configuration.

Executable code for the OS/390 or z/OS 5698-WKB product will only be delivered via Customized Offerings.

Refer to Software Announcement 201-247 , dated September 4, 2001.

Customization Options: Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order with delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example: If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.
