Software Announcement 201-301 October 23, 2001 Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS Version 8.1At a GlanceTivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS V8R1 provides your enterprise with a production management system with the ability to manage work running on virtually any system and in virtually any operating environment. The new features in this release help you plan, manage, and automate the production workload. They include:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). OverviewTivoli® Workload Schedule for z/OS is a production management system that manages all work running on any system and in virtually any operating environment. It helps you plan, manage, and automate the production workload. With Version 8.1 of Tivoli Workload Scheduler, you get the following improvements:
The new Tivoli Job Scheduling Console has many additional capabilities and ease-of-use features for the planner and the operator. For example:
Best of all, a new common query group has been added to the Job Scheduling Console. From this group, queries containing jobs or job streams from multiple engines (for example, multiple distributed and mainframe controllers) can be created, allowing multiple objects to be managed from a single view. Each query can have many filtering mechanisms (for example, name, priority, status). This will allow the user to create queries such as show me all jobs in error, regardless of scheduling engine or location. Key Prerequisites
DescriptionNew in V8.1Catalog Management Improvements The new improvements remove the need for reserving a held output class for the exclusive use of the OPC Data Store, as it would allow the use of all of the 36 output classes for user-defined purposes. In addition, it will take the OPC Data Store out of the "production loop", by supplying it with a copy of the Sysout data that it will store and then delete. This removes all delay in the "normal" JES processing of system datasets, since they do not get shunted onto the OPC Data Store held task before being re-routed to their original output class some time later. This also allows the OPC Data Store to run at a very low priority if so desired. In addition, this new release provides improvements in reducing functional limitations and usability problems associated with the pure catalog management functions (dataset cleanup, job restart, and job rerun). Job Run Length Resolution Improvement The minimum value for job duration is lowered from one minute to seconds. This enables better accuracy of the daily planning process, with more accurate durations that more closely reflects the actual plan execution. Improved Tivoli Business Systems Manager Integration Monitoring batch processes within Tivoli Business Systems Manager (TBSM) allows for quick determination of problems that threaten Batch Schedules from completing correctly and on time. The discovery of Tivoli Workload Scheduler jobs by TBSM has been improved by identifying jobs to be actively monitored in TBSM (key jobs), which can result in improved performance and integration. Removable Media Manager Integration Better integration with Removable Media Manager helps improve control of tape volumes vaulting and management of expiration dates. Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS has two types of recovery. It can automate the process or it can prompt the user with some options to manually act on. If the user asks that Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS automatically take recovery actions of a job, it interfaces with Removable Media Manager to verify that a data set exists on a volume and then takes some sort of action as per the user's request. Under Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS's process, the user is provided with the option to delete the data set, expire the data set as per a suggested date, or mark the data set within Removable Media Manager that Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS has taken some action on it. Product Overview Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS is more than a batch scheduling tool it is a production management system with the ability to manage all work running on virtually any system and in virtually any operating environment. Whether you control a single-image OS/390 system, or multivendor networks and systems, Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can help you plan, manage, and automate the production workload. It helps you to maximize the throughput of work and optimize your resources, while allowing you to intervene manually when required. Comprehensive Workload Planning With Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS, you can define your data processing department and production workload in specific terms. Starting from this model, Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS produces operating plans which can provide the basis for your service level agreements and give you a picture of the production workload at any point in time. It then uses these plans to drive, monitor, and control real-time processing of the workload. You can simulate the effects of changes in your production workload and resource availability by generating trial plans. Centralized Management Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can automate, monitor, and control the flow of work through the enterprise's entire data processing operation on local and remote systems. From a single point of control, Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can analyze the status of the production work and drive the processing of the workload according to installation business policies. Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS supports virtually any operating environment, enabling distributed processing across sites and departments within your enterprise. From the controller, you can check the status of work and intervene manually when priorities change, or when you need to run unplanned work. You can also display the output of any job scheduled by Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS. Automated Workload Management Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can automatically drive the production workload by monitoring the flow of work and by directing the processing of operations so it follows the business priorities established in the plan. Through its interface to Tivoli NetView, or its management-by-exception ISPF dialog, it can alert the production control specialist to problems in the production workload processing. Tivoli NetView can also automatically trigger Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS to perform corrective actions in response to these problems. Automatic Workload Recovery Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can enable processing of the production workload to continue when program, system, or connection failures occur. Automatic restart facilities allow you to specify the actions to be taken if work initiated by Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS ends in error. These functions can be used to predefine automatic error-recovery and restart actions for jobs and started tasks. Security By using OS/390 and z/OS security services, Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS can allow you to organize, isolate, and protect user data to help safeguard the integrity of your end-user applications. It can provide a shared central service to different user departments, even when the users are in different companies or different countries. It also provides a high level of security to protect Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS data and resources from unauthorized access. Integration Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS interfaces directly with several Tivoli, IBM, and third-party products providing an integrated approach to the control of complex production workloads. The list of products includes: Tivoli NetView, Tivoli Decision Support for OS/390, Tivoli Information Management, Tivoli Business Systems Manager, IBM Resource Access Control Facility, System Automation for OS/390, and SAP R/3.
