Overview

IBM Interchange Services for e-business offers the latest versions of DataInterchange: DataInterchange/MVS™ V4.1, DataInterchange/MVS-CICS^® V4.1, and DataInterchange Client V4.1 which are designed to provide a powerful data translation and transaction management solution that can grow with your electronic data interchange (EDI) or electronic commerce requirements.

DataInterchange is also designed to help you get a quick start on EDI by enabling communication with your trading partner either via Information Exchange commerce engine by using Expedite software or MQSeries^® messaging queues which supports many diverse platforms, including HP, Sun, Unisys, OS/2^®, Windows^®, and others.

DataInterchange V4.1 enhances the capability of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) translation which solves a wide range of customer requirements, including any-to-any mapping, translation capability, and document type definition (DTD) import capability. The upgraded DataInterchange Client V4.1 runs on a Windows operating system and provides a graphical user interface as an administrative user interface for DataInterchange host products. Virtual storage access method (VSAM) files will no longer be supported.

Previous Program Information

The previous versions of DataInterchange V3.1 will still be available after announcing this new version of DataInterchange V4.1. Customers can choose any of them considering their requirements and/or their system environments. For more detail, refer to the Product Positioning and Prices sections.

Description

DataInterchange facilities are designed to help you create application data mappings to be used as a standalone EDI system or integrated with other applications through its application program interfaces (APIs), on either OS/390 MVS systems for batch processing or MVS-CICS for realtime processing. The application data mappings convert from/into proprietary EDI standard and nonstandard formats, including but not limited to, ANSI X.12, UN/EDIFACT, and UCS. DataInterchange supports subsets of the published ANSI X.12 and UN/EDIFACT standards, as interpreted by industries such as retail, transportation, electronics, automotive, petroleum, healthcare, insurance, and manufacturing.

The primary DataInterchange V4.1 enhancements are as follows:

Mapping and Translation of XML Data
XML DTDs can now be imported directly into DataInterchange Client V4.1 without requiring a separate utility to convert them to a standard (refer to XML DTD import below). Also, data can now be mapped and translated directly from XML to EDI, data format, or other XML documents or vice versa (refer to any-to-any mapping below)
XML DTD Import
DataInterchange Client V4.1 allows users to import a DTD from a file and display the DTD for mapping purposes. This is similar to the way DataInterchange now allows import of standard transactions. By allowing users to import their own DTDs, DataInterchange does not restrict which XML standards the customer can use. The users may import whichever DTDs they wish to use, whether they were obtained from an industry consortium, a trading partner, or they created the DTDs themselves.
Any-to-any Mapping
The new any-to-any mapping function allows users to map from any supported source document (data format, EDI, or XML) to any supported target format (data format, EDI, or XML). This function enables users to create many types of maps that were not supported before, including EDI to EDI, XML to EDI, and EDI to XML. It also helps eliminate the need to create a standard for XML or data format documents as was sometimes required previously, and it displays a much better graphical representation of the XML data in the mapper.
Common Database Between Client and Host
The host translator and the client now share a common database structure. This virtually eliminates the need to convert export/import files between host and client format.

Euro Currency

These programs are not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

DataInterchange V4.1 can translate directly (in one step) between data in XML, EDI, or data formats. This is a significant enhancement over DataInterchange V3.1 where some transformations, for example, XML to EDI, required a two-step translation process (XML to data format followed by data format to EDI). DataInterchange V4.1 also allows customers to directly import XML DTDs into DataInterchange Client V4.1 and map them. This is also a significant productivity enhancement over DataInterchange V3.1 where customers had to first convert a DTD to a pseudo EDI standard which could then be imported and mapped as an EDI transformation. For client users, DataInterchange V4.1 has moved to a common database schema for both the client and the host. This further improves productivity by virtually eliminating the necessity of converting between host objects and client objects.

Both DataInterchange/MVS V4.1 and DataInterchange/MVS-CICS^® V4.1 components require the following operating system:

DataInterchange Client V4.1 Requirements

DataInterchange Client V4.1 is a 32-bit Windows^® 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT^®, or Windows 2000 application designed to run on a Pentium^® PC with a minimum 64 MB RAM. This should include a client/server architecture that has open database connectivity (ODBC) to the host system.

Compatibility: DataInterchange V3.1 is upwardly compatible with DataInterchange V4.1. Refer to the Planning Information section for details.

Limitations: The DataInterchange Client V4.1 can be used only with DataInterchange/MVS V4.1 and DataInterchange/MVS-CICS V4.1.

The DataInterchange Client V3.1 can be used only with DataInterchange/MVS V3.1 and DataInterchange/MVS-CICS V3.1.

Planning Information

Installability: DataInterchange V4.1 replaces previously available DataInterchange releases and can be installed directly from V3.1. Authorized program analysis reports (APARs) for DataInterchange V3.1 will be accepted up to the respective dates of discontinuance.

Security, Auditability, and Control

DataInterchange V4.1 security is provided by the Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) or an equivalent product that is consistent with System Authorization Facility (SAF) interfaces. It is recommended that a data security facility be used with the DataInterchange components of IBM Interchange Services for e-business.

There are several customizable levels of authorization and capabilities such as modifying profiles and building/modifying data formats. Access to menu options, files, and record levels is determined by the DataInterchange Administrator. The following list includes some of the other security features:

User ID and password are required to access the announced programs
Multiple levels of access control definable by customers
Editing and validation of input information
Unique control numbers are assigned to all transactions processed
Transaction store records events, errors, messages, and images

Customers manage, and are responsible, for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, appropriate controlled application systems, and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

To order DataInterchange/MVS V4.1 or DataInterchange/MVS-CICS V4.1, customers should follow the steps below and provide the information listed.

XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 V1R2 (5655-D44) can be downloaded from the following Web site:

SMP/E installable version is recommended. XML Toolkit V1R2 only is tested on DataInterchange V4.1. It is also recommended that customers read the Program Directory and other related information at the above Web site before installing this Toolkit.

New Licensees

Orders for new licenses can be placed now. Shipment will begin on February 1, 2002, and will not occur beforehand. Unless a later date is specified, orders entered before February 1, 2002, will be assigned a schedule date of one week following the availability.

Basic License

DataInterchange V4.1 is only available via a MLC. PLC/ALC customers will need to migrate to MLCs in order to comply with IBM's OS/390 price structure. MLCs are higher than previous versions, therefore current MLC customers will incur a higher MLC when they migrate to DataInterchange V4.1. Single Version Charging (SVC) applies.
