Software Announcement 201-257 September 11, 2001 IBM SMP/E for z/OS and OS/390 Version 3 Release 1 Now Available as a Standalone ProductAt a GlanceSMP/E V3R1 is designed to provide the following enhancements for this release:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). OverviewSMP/E is the software installation and maintenance tool for the z/OS and OS/390® platforms. It also maintains an inventory of the installed software and service. SMP/E V3R1 is now available under its own product number as well as remaining a base element of z/OS. This allows customers who are licensed for a currently-supported release of z/OS or OS/390 to order and install the latest release of SMP/E without having to upgrade their entire operating system. Customers benefit because products other than z/OS and OS/390 can exploit the packaging and installation enhancements in SMP/E without having to install a new level of the operating system. In addition, this also allows customers to exploit new electronic delivery and installation technologies in SMP/E sooner. SMP/E V3R1 is available at no additional charge to customers. It is intended for customers who have a license for OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 (5647-A01) or later, or z/OS Version 1 Release 1 (5694-A01) or later. Key PrerequisitesSMP/E V3R1 runs on OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 (5647-A01) or later and z/OS Version 1 Release 1 (5694-A01) or later.
DescriptionSMP/E V3R1 contains the following functional enhancements: Receive From a Network SMP/E is designed to provide the ability to install software products and service directly from a network source, such as the Internet. Today, SMP/E can only process input locally on tape or DASD. By installing directly from a network source, SMP/E is enabling a more seamless integration of electronic software delivery and installation. This is designed to reduce the tasks and time required to install software delivered electronically. SMP/E is designed to provide facilities to construct, and then later unwrap, network transportable packages of software. This allows customers and vendors to create their own packages of SMP/E installable software, and then distribute them within their own enterprise, or to other enterprises. Specifically, the packaging routine is designed to accept partitioned or sequential datasets as input and will create a network transportable package as output. Once this package is made accessible on an FTP server, the SMP/E RECEIVE command can then be used to transfer the package through a TCP/IP network directly into a z/OS or OS/390 SMP/E environment. SMPPTS Spill Data Sets The SMPPTS data set is used by SMP/E to stage PTFs before they are to be installed. Due to the size and scope of today's z/OS, and the increase in the size of individual PTFs, the space needs of this data set have grown quite large. Since the SMPPTS data set is of partitioned organization (PDS or PDSE), it is limited to a single DASD volume, and yet often a single volume is not large enough. To combat this problem SMP/E is designed to provide relief by allowing the use of SMPPTS "spill" data sets to contain the overflow when the SMPPTS data set is full. In effect, this provides multiple physical data sets to be used for a single logical data store. By eliminating the tasks involved when recovering from an overflowing SMPPTS data set, the new SMPPTS spill data set support allows users to install software service with less intervention and less management of the SMP/E environment. HOLDDATA Summary Reports With the size and scope of today's z/OS and OS/390 environments, the installation of even a few months of accumulated software service to a z/OS or OS/390 system can result in a large number of PTFs and ++HOLDS to research. Today, research of HOLD information is a completely manual and tedious process. To assist users in researching and acting upon this important HOLD information, SMP/E is designed to consolidate and summarize the HOLD information encountered during APPLY and ACCEPT command processing. The new HOLDDATA reports will reduce the time needed to research HOLD information when installing software service. The new HOLDDATA reports list the details for each unresolved and bypassed HOLD encountered during APPLY and ACCEPT command processing. The report contains the actual text of the HOLD, thereby saving the user from having to find this information elsewhere. In addition, certain hold reasons (for example, DOC) can contain extremely large amounts of data. Therefore, a mechanism is supplied to allow a user to suppress certain hold reasons from the reports. HFS Data Set Reporting SMP/E is designed to report on the physical HFS data sets associated with hierarchical file system files and directories updated or referenced by SMP/E. The File Allocation Report will display both the directory used by SMP/E, as well as the physical HFS data set which contains that directory. This allows users to ensure the correct file systems, HFS data sets, are mounted and used during SMP/E operations. Packaging Extensions SMP/E plans to support several extensions to product and service packaging:

Education SupportSMP/E education is part of OS/390® and z/OS education. The following worldwide courses are available for classroom delivery:
In the United States and Canada call 800-IBM-TEACH (426-8322) to enroll in one or more of these classes. Technical InformationSpecified Operating EnvironmentHardware RequirementsSMP/E V3R1 runs on the same servers (or processors) required by OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 or later, and z/OS Version 1 Release 1 or later.
To use the SMP/E RECEIVE from Network function, SMP/E requires Integrated
Cryptographic Services Facility (ICSF) to be operational (refer to the
Software Requirements
section below). For ICSF to be operational, it requires either the
Integrated Cryptographic Feature or the Cryptographic Coprocessor Feature
of the processor.
Software RequirementsICSF, part of the z/OS and OS/390 base element Cryptographic Services, is a functional requisite to use SMP/E RECEIVE from Network. ICSF is not required for installation of SMP/E, but is needed at runtime to use this SMP/E function. Compatibility: SMP/E V3R1 runs on OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 or higher, and on z/OS Version 1 Release 1 or higher. SMPCSI data sets that have been updated by V3R1 must be processed by V3R1 from then on. SMPCSI data sets that have been created by V3R1 can only be processed by V3R1. SMPCSI data sets created and processed by prior levels of SMP/E can be processed by V3R1. The following PTFs prevent corruption of SMPCSI data sets and provide some coexistence support when such data sets are processed by both SMP/E V3R1 and prior levels of SMP/E (OS/390 V2R6 through z/OS V1R1):
User Group Requirements: SMP/E V3R1 satisfies or partially satisfies requirements from IBM customers and one or more of the worldwide user group communities.
Planning InformationOS/390 R10 Planning Information: To make it easier for customers to take advantage of the new SMP/E functions, all OS/390 V2R10 ServerPac and Systempac® orders will be built with, and must include, the new level of SMP/E, starting at z/OS V1R2 availability. As always, you must use the same level of SMP/E a system was built with (or a higher level) to maintain a system. In other words, you must maintain the OS/390 V2 R10 ServerPac or SystemPac system you receive after z/OS V1R2 general availability with the level of SMP/E that was used to build your order (namely, SMP/E for z/OS and OS/390 V3R1 or z/OS V1R2 SMP/E). You can prepare for this now by installing the coexistence service for SMP/E for z/OS and OS/390 V3R1 on any systems that will share SMP/E information with your new OS/390 V2R10 ServerPac system. Packaging: This product's executable code is not offered via standard stand-alone product media. It is available only through the following customized Offerings:
