Description

WebSphere AS V4.0, EE enables the execution of distributed business applications that require extended functions and capabilities beyond those offered by current J2EE standards. Enterprise Services and TXSeries complement the J2EE-based support of WebSphere, providing high-powered transaction processing capabilities.

Included with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE are MQSeries and WebSphere AS V4.0, AE.

For information on MQSeries V5.2, refer to MQSeries V5.2 Software Announcement 200-342 , dated October 3, 2000.

For information on WebSphere AS V4.0, AE, refer to Software Announcement 201-227 , dated August 14, 2001.

In addition to WebSphere AS V4.0 EE, a WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0 Enterprise Edition Development Runtime is available for purchase. This product is intended for development purposes only and cannot be used for production purposes or for testing beyond an individual developer's unit testing environment.

Enterprise Services

While WebSphere AS AE implements J2EE and Web services, these two specifications offer limited enterprise-class function. WebSphere enterprise services is a collection of plug-ins that extend the application server to fulfill the broader demands of an enterprise system. Enterprise Services are:

  • Business rule beans — Integrate externally administered business rules that encapsulate business practices and promote consistent policy.
  • Message beans and JMS Listener — Integrate messaging and component-based paradigms, including a blending of synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns (both in-bound and out-bound); mappings between message elements and component attributes; and declarative transactional support.
  • Internationalization Service — Global integration that accommodates different cultural conventions and accounts for varying geographical boundaries.
  • WorkArea Service — Application integration through transparent access to shared information across a distributed computing environment.
  • CORBA support — Application integration through CORBA services, including bidirectional connectivity to ORBs from multiple vendors and the ability to leverage existing code written in C++.
  • ActiveX to EJB bridge — Component model integration, including client and server-based access to Java™ from ActiveX environments.

TXSeries, Version 4.3

TXSeries V4.3 builds on its core strengths of scalability, security, transactional integrity, and system reliability. It includes tools to extend implementations based on CICS or Encina to a variety of front- and back-end systems. Included in TXSeries are server and gateway options to connect TXSeries applications to Web servers, application servers, and back-end systems such as mainframe CICS and IMS™. Included are gateways that create and access integrated Internet/intranet TXSeries-based applications, various clients, message queuing capabilities, and prerequisite run-time products. TXSeries also includes object support Encina ++, Object Transaction Services (OTS), and Object Concurrency Control Services (OCCS), and offers support for Java and messaging technologies.

TXSeries supports and simplifies transactional connections across increasingly diverse and complex networks. TXSeries delivers the following features necessary for large-scale transaction processing:

  • Scalability — Whether you use the Internet as a platform for e-business or are looking to the latest technologies to expand internal networks into an extranet, most IT departments face the challenge of developing systems and applications that can handle unlimited, or at least unknown, numbers of clients. xSeries is based on industry-proven technology that leverages replication and workload management to manage thousands of clients and process up to 1 billion transactions in 24 hours.
  • Availability — Business-critical applications must always be available. TXSeries incorporates replication, operational and run-time support, and online management to centrally administer multiple servers, eliminating single points of failure and ensuring that applications are always available.
  • System integrity — System integrity is the cornerstone of a solid transaction processing foundation. In addition to providing ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability) properties, TXSeries helps eliminate bottlenecks and failure points, and enables fast commit processing for transactional integrity across heterogeneous servers.
  • Longevity — To ensure the longevity of transactional applications, TXSeries focuses on two aspects of leveraging applications:
    • Extending existing applications to meet new business goals, such as bringing mainframe applications to the Web
    • Allowing new applications to use information and services from existing applications
  • Security — Through DCE, TXSeries provides the security that leverages both Kerberos and public key technology with authentication control, authorization control, session security, and Web security.
  • TXSeries for Web-Based Transaction Processing — TXSeries performs Web-based transactions with either De-Light or CTG, thus allowing choices for Web clients. TXSeries uses standard Web browsers to function as front ends for TXSeries applications. It also supports a variety of Web client-to-server connections including Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Java servlets and applets via the DE-Light Gateway and CICS Transaction Gateway, remote procedure calls, and CORBA's Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP).

Programmer Productivity and Portability

WebSphere AS V4.0, EE supports a variety of programming models:

  • The CICS programming model can take advantage of existing skills and applications to extend mainframe applications to a distributed environment.
  • The Encina programming model helps reduce development time. The model uses libraries that contain the routine instructions required to perform complex, highly reliable transactions that traverse multiple database and data sources.
  • Enterprise Services extends the J2EE and Web Services programming models provided by WebSphere AS V4.0, AE. The message beans and JMS Listener support, business rule beans, work area service, and internationalization service provide programming interfaces that can be used in conjunction with J2EE applications.
  • Enterprise Services also supports a simple CORBA 2.1 C++ programming model to augment and complement J2EE-based topologies, either as clients which call the J2EE environment or as servers called by J2EE-based environments.

WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Clients

Enterprise Services augments the J2EE client by adding access to the Enterprise Services introduced on the J2EE server. Enterprise Services also provides additional client capabilities.

  • CORBA C++ clients, based on the IBM C++ ORB, that can access EJBs and services running on WebSphere AS V4.0, AE or WebSphere AS V4.0, EE servers.
  • ActiveX clients that can access EJBs and J2EE services on WebSphere AS V4.0, AE or WebSphere AS V4.0, EE servers.
  • CORBA C++ and Java clients, based on popular vendor ORBs, that can access EJBs running on WebSphere AS V4.0, AE or WebSphere AS V4.0, EE servers.

TXSeries supports CICS clients, which are a versatile, proven connection of users to enterprise transaction systems:

  • CICS clients for AIX, Solaris, OS/2®, DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, and Macintosh operate directly with any supported CICS server.
  • Java and Internet clients include object-oriented interfaces for Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2.

TXSeries also supports Encina clients that span a spectrum of client technology for exceptional client-to-server connectivity and transaction management:

  • Encina client, in platform-specific C or C++
  • Lightweight, Java-based DE-Light client
  • CORBA client for IONA Orbix clients and servers that use the Encina
  • OTS (based on Orbix V2.3), either with or without DCE servers

Compatibility: The CICS component of the WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Windows NT products differ from other products (Transaction Server for OS/2®, Version 4, CICS for OS/2, Version 2, and CICS for Windows NT, Version 2) in several ways.

  • Resource definitions
  • User exits
  • Operational procedures
  • VSAM file managers
  • Supported CICS API

The following functions are not supported:

  • File control using CICS for Windows NT, Version 2 or CICS for OS/2, Version 2 internal file system
  • Connectivity using NetBIOS or NetBIOS emulation over IPX

Limitations

  • The CICS Systems Manager for AIX is not delivered with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for AIX. Customers who require workload management as part of a CICS implementation on an RS/6000 SP™ machine should contact IBM Transaction Systems Services regarding service offerings in this area. This should be considered when migrating from the Transaction Server for AIX, Version 4.1.
  • No license management is offered in the WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Windows NT products.
  • TXSeries supports only the IBM DCE and the IBM Communications Server on Windows 2000.
  • CICS foundation classes are available with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for AIX and the WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Windows NT products only, and are offered as a technology release. Customers are advised not to use the foundation classes in production.
  • Synclevel 2 requires the Encina PPC Gateway. On Windows NT, the Encina PPC Gateway runs with IBM Communications Server, but does not run with Microsoft SNA Server.
  • The CICS screen design aid (cicssda) is no longer supported with TXSeries CICS. BMS maps should be designed on mainframe systems.
  • When upgrading from CICS for Windows NT or CICS for OS/2, refer to the Compatibility section.

Performance Considerations: For capacity planning information, contact your IBM representative.

Planning Information

Pricing Model: Refer to the Customer Responsibilities section for details of use authority.

For WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime for AIX, WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime for Solaris, and WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime for Windows NT, you must acquire one license for each user. If the total number of users exceeds the number of licenses, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA).

Charges for installations of WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for AIX, WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Solaris, and WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Windows NT are based on the number of processors available. The total number of processors used cannot exceed the quantity in the applicable Proofs of Entitlement. If the total number exceeds the quantity in the PoE, you must notify IBM or its reseller as stated in the IPLA.

Customer Responsibilities: Ensure that the following usage restrictions are applied:

  • DB2 Universal Database®, as delivered with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE, must be installed on the same machine as the WebSphere Application Server or SecureWay® Directory component of WebSphere AS V4.0, EE, and used in conjunction with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE. It must be used only to store and manage data used or generated by WebSphere AS V4.0, EE or WebSphere AS V4.0, EE-based applications, and not for any other data management purposes. For example, it cannot be used for inbound connections from non-WebSphere AS V4.0, EE applications for data queries or report generation. The requirement for the storage or manipulation of DB2 controlled data by non-WebSphere AS V4.0, EE applications must be satisfied with a production license for DB2 or another RDBMS.

  • MQSeries, as delivered with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE, must be installed on the same machine or SP node as WebSphere AS V4.0, EE, and must only be used to provide asynchronous communications for WebSphere AS V4.0, EE applications.

MQSeries is authorized for use between WebSphere AS V4.0, EE applications, including the supplied applications, and stand-alone MQSeries applications on systems where a full MQSeries license has been acquired.

  • DCE Cell Directory and DCE Security servers are delivered with WebSphere AS V4.0, EE, and must be used with installed WebSphere AS V4.0, EE servers only. Use is restricted to the WebSphere AS V4.0, EE environment. A customer is entitled to install one each of the DCE Cell Directory and Security servers with each WebSphere AS V4.0, EE server license acquired. The DCE Runtime Services may be copied, as necessary, to support users whose use of DCE Runtime Services requires a WebSphere AS V4.0, EE server function to execute.

Additional DCE Cell Directory and Security server and DCE Runtime Services licenses must be acquired separately for use with applications that run on middleware other than WebSphere AS V4.0, EE servers.

The DCE CD-ROM in WebSphere AS V4.0, EE for Solaris includes Distributed File System (DFS™), for which no use authority is given.

  • The WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime can be used for development purposes only and is limited to an individual developer's unit testing environment. Unit test is defined as testing performed on a developer's machine in order to verify that the work products built by that developer satisfy specific quality criteria. The WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime cannot be used on separate servers beyond the developer's unit testing environment. This includes staging and integration servers that host unit-tested work products of multiple developers, quality assurance servers, user acceptance testing servers, and benchmarking and stress testing servers that are in place to simulate production workloads. The WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime cannot be used for production purposes or redistributed.

Installability: Users of TXSeries 4.2 can migrate to WebSphere AS V4.0, EE without the need to uninstall the existing level. Detailed instructions are provided in the corresponding planning manuals.

Users of older releases of CICS or Encina may be required to either reinstall a new TXSeries system or migrate to an intermediate level. When TXSeries is installed, the presence of any existing CICS or Encina will be flagged with a warning message. The installation can be aborted or continued, as appropriate; you can overwrite the existing level without saving any of its information.

The installation procedures for this release of WebSphere AS V4.0, EE vary across the various transaction servers.

The License Information (LI) Booklet for WebSphere AS V4.0, EE is different from the LI book for WebSphere AS V4.0, EE Development Runtime.

Security, Auditability, and Control

WebSphere AS V4.0, EE uses the security and auditability features of the workstation operating system together with full support of Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) authentication Remote Procedure Call (RPC), allowing secure access in a LAN environment.

Security and auditability features of the CICS monitor include:

  • Standard CICS security:
    • Transaction security restricting access to transactions to authorized users.
    • Resource security restricting access to CICS resources to authorized users.
  • External security manager: An interface is provided to use the services of an external security manager.

DCE provides automated authentication and security for CICS.

The Encina monitor provides automated authorization checking, building on DCE security. The Encina monitor simplifies the use of DCE security with its own ACL manager and automatic checking of security credentials of all clients that access Encina monitor services.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
