Overview

If your enterprise uses Microsoft™ Exchange 5.5 or 2000 systems for messaging and collaboration, Tivoli® Management Solution for Exchange Version 1.1 provides easily configurable proactive monitoring, reporting, and problem solving for Exchange environments. These environments can range from stand-alone e-mail servers to the distributed, clustered configuration required by global e-business.

Installing Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange requires minimal setup time and automatically configures to the Exchange environment. The application then automatically fixes problems, allowing your staff to focus on the issues you target as important. Management solutions can be precisely customized for each environment by using a highly intuitive graphical interface.

Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange can help your enterprise by, for example:

  • Noting which Exchange components are installed on each server, then monitoring those components.
  • Reporting service dependencies and identifying when crucial services are not running.
  • Monitoring the Exchange processes use of resources, such as CPU, working set, paged, and non-paged pool.
  • Checking such basic performance indicators as CPU, I/O, and memory usage, and warning the user before those resources become overtaxed.
  • Warning of directory store access violations that could indicate security configuration problems or unauthorized data access.
  • Tracking domains, servers, sites, and users that indicate e-mail abuse.
  • Collecting and reporting Exchange errors and warnings from the Exchange event log.
  • Keeping a historical record of Exchange performance for use in resource planning.

Description

Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange provides comprehensive monitoring and management of Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and 2000 systems. Specific solution set rules are designed to:

  • Note which Exchange components are installed on each server and monitor accordingly.
  • Report service dependencies and identify when crucial services are not running.
  • Monitor the Exchange processes use of resources, such as CPU, working set, paged, and non-paged pool.
  • Check basic performance indicators such as CPU, I/O, and memory usage, warning before resources become overtaxed.
  • Check the free space of the disks where the Exchange database files are stored and the size of the database files, sending an alert before depleted storage space causes the failure of Exchange or other applications.
  • Check the free space of the disks that hold the Exchange transaction log files, reporting depletion of free space that may ultimately cause Exchange or other applications to fail.
  • Identify inactive public folders and mailboxes that may be deleted to free up disk space.
  • Identify public folders and mailboxes that do not have a storage limit check.
  • Raise an alert when the number of messages or total bytes in a public folder exceeds a specified threshold, preventing the unnecessary usage of disk space.
  • Check for mailboxes that are approaching or have exceeded their number of messages or storage limit check.
  • Regularly check the reachability and response time of specified e-mail addresses.
  • Warn of Directory Store access violations that could indicate either a security configuration problem within Exchange, or attempts by users to access Exchange data for which they are not authorized.
  • Track domains, servers, sites, and users receiving or sending excessive mail, activity that could signal mail relaying and other forms of e-mail abuse.
  • Monitor the number of active users, warning when high numbers of users threaten to put an excessive load on the system.
  • Report when Message Transfer Agent connection queue or work queue lengths exceed a specified threshold, enabling the administrator to improve Exchange performance either by increasing system resources or restricting users use of the e-mail system.
  • Monitor the Internet Mail Connector for high activity, large queue length, excessive number of failed connections or non-delivered inbound or outbound messages, problems that may indicate improper configurations, insufficient system resources, junk mail or denial of service attacks, or failure of remote SMTP mail systems.
  • Report the size of the Private Information Stores queues, high message rates, and the average time for local and remote delivery of messages, enabling the administrator to improve Exchange performance either by increasing system resources or restricting users use of the e-mail system.
  • Collect and report Exchange errors and warnings from the Exchange event log.
  • Keep an historic record of Exchange performance for use in resource planning.

Product Positioning

The new Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange 1.1 is a Framework optional product that does not require the framework for operation as does the current Tivoli Manager for Exchange. The new Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange features support for Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and 2000, minimal installation and setup time, and a new flexible rules engine.

Hardware Requirements

Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange will require 30 MB of disk on a Windows NT® or Windows® 2000 system. The memory and processor requirements are minimal.

Software Requirements

Windows NT or Windows 2000 is all that is required to install Tivoli Management Solution for Exchange.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

New Licensees: Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.

Shipment will begin on the planned availability date.

Current Licensees of 5697-EXC or 5698-EXC: Until December 31, 2001, a no-charge (NC) upgrade to 5698-MSE may be ordered for those customers currently licensed for 5697-EXC V1.2, Tivoli Manager for Microsoft™ Exchange, or 5698-EXC V01.02.00, Tivoli Manager for Microsoft Exchange.

Upgrades may be acquired by customers currently licensed for 5697-SPT for 5697-EXC or 5698-SPT for 5698-EXC. Customers upgrading to 5698-MSE will receive Tivoli 1st Year NC Support.

Basic License: To order a basic license, specify the program number, feature number 9001 for asset registration, and the feature number of the desired distribution medium. Also, specify the one-time charge (OTC) feature number from the tables below in the quantity desired (maximum quantity of 250).

The quantity of Tivoli Management Points is based on number of distributed servers per tier.

Tivoli Systems Support

Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a NC order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support — NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.

Prior to the end of the first 12 months support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

Support Upgrade

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable OTC feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the NC support period.

In subsequent years, if a customer wants to upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option, an MES order must be entered to discontinue the existing support option feature number and to add the feature number for the desired options. After an MES order is entered, the support will be renewed and billed annually at that support level unless support is cancelled by the customer.
