At a Glancez/VM Version 4 Release 1, the new base for all future VM development, includes:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). Overviewz/VM Version 4 offers a great opportunity for customers to exploit S/390® or zSeries servers at a substantially lower cost. This new version of z/VM will be priced on a per-engine basis and will support IBM Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) processor features for Linux-based workloads and standard engines for all other zSeries and S/390 workloads (an engine is also referred to as a Central Processor). z/VM Version 4 Release 1 is the replacement product for z/VM Version 3 Release 1 (5654-A17). It is not a replacement product for the Virtual Image Facility (5739-A01) but offers significant functional capabilities not found in the Virtual Image Facility.
z/VM builds upon the solid Virtual Machine (VM) product and offers a new
base for customers who want to exploit IBM VM technology, including
64-bit addressing on the industry's best-of-breed server platform, the
IBM z/VM Version 4 offers an ideal platform for consolidating Linux workloads on a single S/390 or zSeries 900 server. Running Linux as a guest of z/VM enables you to run hundreds of Linux images. The enhanced VM Control Program (CP) is designed to improve performance of networking devices and virtual storage management for Linux guests. Significant changes have been made to the packaging of z/VM Version 4. Some formerly priced features of VM/ESA® and z/VM Version 3 Release 1 (TCP/IP for z/VM, NFS, and the CMS Utilities) are now packaged with z/VM at no additional charge. RealTime Monitor (RTM), VM Performance Reporting Facility (VMPRF), and IBM Directory Maintenance for VM/ESA (DirMaint), which were formerly priced products, are now available as optional features of z/VM Version 4 and will be priced on a per-engine basis. The installation process for z/VM Version 4 Release 1 has been improved to help make it faster and easier for customers to install VM and quickly put it into operation. For the most current information about z/VM, refer to the VM Web site at: IBM Global Financing provides financial packages to enable your company's smooth and more affordable transition to the world of Linux for S/390, or zSeries, and z/VM. Key PrerequisitesRefer to the Hardware Requirements and Software Requirements sections for details.
DescriptionMove from Model-Group Pricing to Engine-Based Pricing
The new engine-based pricing for z/VM Version 4 may make it
financially more attractive to add VM workload incrementally to an
existing S/390 or IBM When ordering z/VM Version 4 Release 1 or the optional features to operate on standard processor engines, the quantity must be equal to the number of standard processor engines on your S/390 or zSeries server. When ordering z/VM Version 4 Release 1 or the optional features to operate on processor engines with the IFL feature, the quantity must be equal to the number of processor engines with the IFL processor features on your S/390 or zSeries server. International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and Subscription and Support (S&S) Considerations IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to, an enterprise. Proof of Entitlement (PoE) is based on the number of processor engines purchased. S&S is recommended to provide customers with the level of service expected with S/390 and z/VM program products. The quantity of S&S licenses must be equal to the number of OTC licenses ordered for the z/VM Version 4 Release 1. S&S will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. When additional and enhanced functions become available with a new version or release of a product, the price of the base product may increase to reflect the additional value. Customers who have purchased S&S will get the new version or release at no additional cost. IFL Processor Feature Support With the z/VM Version 4 support for IFL processor features, you can run multiple Linux images on an IFL-configured z/VM system without affecting the software fees of your existing S/390 or zSeries environment. z/OS, Linux, OS/390®, z/VM, VM/ESA, TPF, or VSE/ESA customers can add z/VM Version 4 to their environment and only pay a z/VM price that corresponds to the number of engines with the IFL processor feature hosting Linux images. Independent Software Vendors (ISV) who provide applications to you, may be among those ISVs who have now adopted a new pricing policy for the hardware workspace dedicated to Linux. Contact your ISV to determine if ISV software charges for existing S/390 or zSeries applications on your G5, G6, or zSeries will be unaffected by adding IFL features to the server. Installations should note that traditional operating systems such as z/OS, OS/390, TPF, VSE/ESA, z/VM Version 3 Release 1, or VM/ESA, cannot run on IFL processor features. Only Linux applications or Linux operating in conjunction with z/VM Version 4 Release 1 are supported on the IFL processor feature. IFL processor features are available for the zSeries 900 family of servers and the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers Generation 5 and 6. Channel Command Word (CCW) Translation Extensions for Linux Guests To help improve the performance of I/O to network devices, the enhanced Control Program (CP) is designed to extend the fast CCW translator to a wide range of channel programs that perform I/Os to network adapters such as channel-to-channel adapters (CTCA), CLAW, OSA, and LAN Channel Station (LCS) devices. Although the fast CCW translation extensions are based on analysis of Linux guest channel programs, any VM guest that does qualifying I/Os will benefit and will be transparent to the end user. Enhanced Page Fault Handling for Linux Guests With the PTF for APAR VM62840, the current page fault handling support within CP is designed to allow Linux for S/390 or Linux for zSeries guests to take full advantage of page fault notifications, allowing the guest to continue processing while the page fault is handled by CP. Product Packaging Modifications for z/VM Version 4 Release 1
The z/VM Version 4 Release 1 install and service processes have
been enhanced to accommodate customers who have system programmers with
minimum skills. Using predefined defaults and new install procedures,
this new process is designed to make it faster and easier to install and
maintain z/VM Version 4 Release 1. The traditional
install and service will continue to be available for those customers
with VM-related skills.
New Ordering ProcessThe z/VM Version 4 System Delivery Offering (SDO), program number 5739-A04, is the IBM program offering for z/VM that includes a single deliverable containing Version 4 Release 1 and a group of fully serviced IBM Licensed Program Products. The z/VM SDO is the only method that can be used to order z/VM Version 4 starting on July 3, 2001. The z/VM SDO package contains:
The SDO Optional Products Enabling Aid was formerly know as the SDO Enabling Feature. The key benefit of the z/VM SDO is the ability to dynamically update the SDO with new program products (versions and releases), with service when available, or deleting withdrawn products. This capability makes the SDO a more effective solution for the z/VM Version 4 customer. For a complete list of products available and serviced with the z/VM Version 4 Release 1 SDO or for more information on the z/VM SDO, refer to the z/VM Web site at:
The VM/ESA SDO (5654-026), which is at the
VM/ESA Version 2 Release 4 level, and the
z/VM Version 3 Release 1 SDO (5654-A20) can still be
ordered after the availability of the
z/VM Version 4 Release 1 SDO.

Euro CurrencyThis program is EuroReady. For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at: EuroReady Products IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards. Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications. IBM Hardware Ready IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third-party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third-party attached hardware. In these instances, IBM is not in a position to assert that these third-party products are, in themselves, EuroReady. Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready. EuroReady Solutions IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:
and can clearly demonstrate this by:
The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the solution specification, as described in the contracts document. Product Positioningz/VM Version 4 is the follow-on product for VM/ESA and z/VM Version 3 Release 1 customers. It provides additional support and exploitation opportunities for the thousands of customers who have built enterprise-wide automation and infrastructure enhancements on the VM platform in support of their applications, database systems, network computing, and e-business solutions. It also provides the capability to run Linux on the IFL processor feature. z/VM Version 4 is intended to address the following customer situations:

Performance Considerations:
System performance depends on the hardware resources allocated to
z/VM Version 4 Release 1 and on the level of activity within
each Linux image. For assistance in understanding the performance
implications for a particular situation, contact your IBM representative
or your IBM Business Partner.
Planning Informationz/VM Version 4 and z/VM Software Subscription and Support: You must order z/VM Version 4 Release 1 using the SDO, program number 5739-A04. If you desire the level of service expected with S/390 and z/VM program products, you are strongly encouraged to order the program number for z/VM Software Subscription and Support. This program number provides enhanced support which includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) and access to updates, releases, and versions of the program for as long as support is in effect. To host Linux guests of z/VM Version 4 Release 1, you must also obtain the Linux for zSeries or Linux for S/390 code from one of the distributors that have a marketing relationship with IBM. These distributions can be found at: Licensed Products Packaged with z/VM Version 4 Release 1: With the availability of z/VM Version 4 Release 1, the following priced, optional products or features are automatically shipped pre-installed on the z/VM Version 4 Release 1 base product DDRs:
These products must be enabled to use. If you choose to enable them, you must have a license for the product or the feature. If you do not have a license for RSCS and TSM, you may establish one by placing an order for the product and using the delivery option "ship publications only" (feature number 3471). This delivery option will prevent unnecessary shipment of the media while allowing for shipment of the basic publications for the products, including the program directories. If you do not have a license for RTM, PRF, or DirMaint, you may establish one by placing an order for the z/VM Version 4 Release 1 feature and using the delivery option "ship publications only" (feature number 3471). This delivery option will prevent unnecessary shipment of the media while allowing for shipment of the basic publications for the products, including the program directories. The program directories include instructions for enabling use of the products. Prior to installation, you should review the Software Vendor Product and IBM Licensed Product matrices to ensure you have the correct levels of products.
Running 370-mode Applications: To simplify the migration of older applications and facilitate the running of 370-mode only CMS applications in non 370-mode virtual machines, such as XA or XC mode, IBM provides the 370 Accommodation function. This function originally shipped with VM/ESA 1.2.1 (available July 1993) has since been enhanced as the result of customer experience and input. 370 Accommodation handles the vast majority of inconsistencies between 370 mode and either XA or XC mode, eliminating the need to change these applications to exploit the new architectures. z/VM Version 4 only supports XA, ESA, and XC mode virtual machines. z/VM Version 4 no longer supports 370-mode virtual machines. 370-mode virtual machines are converted to XA mode during logon processing. The 370 Accommodation function is still supported for applications. The CMS Migration Utility Feature, provided with VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3, is not available with z/VM Version 4 Release 1. Customers who find their applications cannot run under the current level of CMS should use the 370 Accommodation function or modify their applications if possible. If problems persist, customers should call IBM Service for assistance. Direct Customer Support: Direct customer support is provided by IBM Operational Support Services Support Line. This fee service enhances customers' productivity by providing voice and electronic access into the IBM support organization. IBM Operational Support Services Support Line will help answer questions pertaining to usage, and suspected software defects for eligible products. Installation and technical support is provided by Global Services. For more information, call 800-IBM-4YOU (426-4968). Packaging: z/VM Version 4 Release 1 product package is distributed with the following:
