Description

New for MQSeries

MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS Alpha and MQSeries for Compaq NonStop Kernel, both at V5.1, exploit the features of the Compaq OpenVMS operating system on Compaq Alpha, and Compaq NonStop Kernel operating system on Compaq NonStop Himalaya hardware, respectively.

These platforms added to the MQSeries Version 5.1 environment put you in a better position to incorporate enhancements in the MQSeries family of products.

New MQSeries features for these platforms

  • Support for multiple queue managers
  • Cluster (or groups) of queue managers
    • Share workload dynamically
    • Balance workload
    • Reroute workload if a system component fails or network path becomes unavailable
  • 100 MB message support and a maximum queue size of 2 GB allow many large messages to be placed on a queue
  • Reduced memory use allows many clients and channels to be used before memory use becomes a constraint
  • Messages passed outside of syncpoint between applications on the same queue manager incur a low resource cost to process each message
  • Data conversion tables that support character sets containing the Euro character are included
  • C++ and Java language support
  • MQSeries data conversion support includes double and multibyte character sets in all internally supported message formats including PCFs; user exits can also be enhanced to support these character sets.

Migration: When migrating from down-level MQSeries to these new offerings, you must be at the latest maintenance level:

  • MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS Alpha — V2.2.1.1 (ECO 9)
  • MQSeries for Compaq NonStop Kernel — V2.2.0.1 (U473441)

Dynamic Workload Distribution: MQSeries support for clusters makes managing networks of queue managers much simpler. The idea of a dynamic workload distribution of queue managers allows the creation of public queues and channels.

The same simple programming model means that a message is put to a single named queue. However, that queue may exist as several equivalent queues on different queue managers, with each message being routed to just one of them. If one destination becomes unavailable or unreachable, then an alternative is used. The sender of the message need not take any action.

The dynamic workload distribution concept can also be exploited for fault tolerant and parallel processing. Multiple network paths and multiple queues can be defined and used to provide hot standby and extra capacity.

Publish/Subscribe: Publish and subscribe, sometimes known as Event Services, enables users to register interest in particular sets of information and then to receive such information when it becomes available.

Application programs can operate as publishers or subscribers on Compaq OpenVMS Alpha and Compaq NonStop Kernel, over MQSeries, using a Publish/Subscribe broker on one of the broker-supported platforms.

Administration: Remote administration is supported through the MQSeries Explorer, an element of MQSeries for Windows NT®, V5.1. A GUI aids in administering the elements of your MQSeries network, including MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS Alpha and Compaq NonStop Kernel. Support for multiple queue managers offers increased flexibility in configuration. Queue manager clustering simplifies administration significantly. You may also manage with the:

  • Programmable Command Format (PCF) command feature
  • Web Administration feature
  • One of the many third-party system management products

Scalability of MQSeries applications on Compaq OpenVMS Alpha and Compaq NonStop Kernel is improved by increases in message and message queue size. MQSeries Bindings for Java and support for multithreaded programs (Compaq OpenVMS Alpha only) assist in integrating MQSeries into advanced e-business applications.

Planning Information

Capacity Unit Requirements for MQSeries Products: The capacity units described are for MQSeries base products. Different, non-interchangeable units are used for other products in the MQSeries family.

The pricing for MQSeries servers is based on capacity units, with each processor group requiring a certain number of capacity units. The boxed program package includes entitled capacity units, but additional capacity units may be required. Refer to the detail within the following table for information on the number of capacity units required per processor group.

MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS Alpha, V5.1

The price model for MQSeries base products is structured over multiple tiers defined by the number of processors or processor group on which the MQSeries product will be installed. It uses a single charge unit, the capacity unit, as the means of charging. This unit has no direct relationship to machine capability: it is a charging authorization term only. Additional capacity units are required as you move to larger systems or add new systems.

  • Use this new table to order a new license of an MQSeries server product.

  • Customers upgrading from earlier releases of MQSeries using Passport Advantage, who are not changing processor group (in the new table), do not need to order any additional capacity units, even if the number of capacity units required for their processor group increased using the new table.

Customers who are upgrading from an earlier release of MQSeries using Passport Advantage, who are changing the processor group (in the new table), can use the capacity units they have (which may be based on the old table), and then must acquire additional capacity units (if necessary) to satisfy the requirements of the new table. Any "spare" Capacity units may be used toward other MQSeries entitlement, but are not refundable.

  • Customers with current upgrade protection in Passport Advantage, who use MQSeries on the same machine, can continue to get upgrades without purchasing more capacity units.

  • Customers who upgrade should retain their original product as Proof of Entitlement (PoE) to use with the old table.

For pricing and licensing information, visit:

For the capacity unit information, refer to MQSeries publication: GC34-5265 or the MQSeries calculator at:

MQSeries capacity units are intended to be transferable across MQSeries platforms that appear in the same MQSeries Transfer Group. MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS capacity units may be treated in the same way as the generic MQSeries capacity units for transferability within a Transfer Group. The MQSeries Transfer Group will generally, but not exclusively, define MQSeries products at a consistent version and release level. In general, a chargeable upgrade path will be provided to enable existing use authorization (capacity units) to be migrated to an MQSeries product at a functionally enhanced version or release level. The following table shows the current MQSeries Transfer Groups and the platforms, within each group, eligible for capacity unit transferability. The Version.Release levels shown refer to MQSeries products.

Capacity units are transferable within an individual MQSeries Transfer Group A, B, or C but cannot be transferred between the three groups. MQSeries capacity units are not transferable to other MQSeries family products covered by MQSeries Integrator capacity units and MQSeries Workflow capacity units.

Ordering Information

MQSeries base server products use a flexible pricing structure. The pricing structure simplifies the development and management of complex applications, particularly for large organizations.

There is only one charge unit for these MQSeries base server products: the capacity unit.

For MQSeries for Compaq OpenVMS Alpha, V5.1 the price model is structured over tiers that are defined by processor groups. Two capacity units are included with the program package. The higher the group, the higher the tier position and the more use authorization needed to use the program. This applies to each machine and machine upgrade.

For MQSeries for Compaq NonStop Kernel, V5.1, a ten-pack capacity unit use authorization is included with the program package and authorization requests are determined by a specified machine group listing.

Acquire additional capacity units separately.
