Overview

WebSphere™ Portal Server for Multiplatforms Version 1.2 (Portal Server) provides an open framework for creating many kinds of custom portals, suitable for both enterprise and service provider companies.

The framework simplifies many of the tasks involved in building complex portal sites and removes much of the overhead of developing user interfaces for multiple browsers or mobile devices. It also helps leverage and reuse existing Web assets. Portals built with Portal Server are accessible through a variety of desktop and mobile browsers.

WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.2 includes:

  • Continued support for AIX® and adds support for Windows NT®, Windows® 2000, and Solaris
  • Support for i-mode
  • Removal of the dependency on WebSphere Everyplace™ Suite
  • User group support and access control improvements
  • Extended Search
  • Page customizer
  • Improved portlet installation
  • New portlet API

Predefined portlets are included for the following:

  • Lotus® iNotes: Mail, Calendar, and To-Do List
  • Lotus Notes®: Mail and Calendar
  • Extended Search
  • Microsoft™ Exchange/2000: Mail Inbox View, Mail Calendar, and Contacts List
  • Lotus: SameTime and QuickPlace
  • Portlet Catalog
  • Sample Personalization Portlet

WebSphere Portal Server V1.2 will initially be available in English, then will be refreshed with software that supports multiple languages. Customers who acquire the English program are eligible to receive the Multilingual program for no additional charge. Eligible customers may contact IBM Service to request the refreshed program code.

One of the following:

  • AIX 4.3.3.02, or later
  • Windows NT Server 4.0, SP 4, SP 6a, or later
  • Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server
  • Solaris V7 at a maintenance level of 4/2000, or later, or Solaris V8

Description

WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.2 replaces WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.1. This new release provides additional operating system support, new functions, and features designed to help you provide better service to your users.

Version 1.2 improvements include:

  • Support for Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Solaris operating systems in addition to AIX

  • I-mode support for a new class of devices: i-mode phones

    This functionality can only be exploited if Portal Server is installed on top of WebSphere Everyplace Suite 1.1.3.

  • WebSphere Everyplace Suite no longer a prerequisite

    If no pervasive devices need to connect to Portal Server, the customer no longer needs to base the Portal Server installation on WebSphere Everyplace Suite. Portal Server is installed as an application into WebSphere Application Server, utilizing the WebSphere Application Server authentication mechanisms, and containing it's own enrollment functions.

  • User group support and access control improvements to provide the capability to work with users, including assigning permissions and portlet access to groups or users

    An interface is provided that allows for utilizing other products, such as Tivoli® SecureWay® Policy Director, to manage access control in complex environments.

  • Extended Search capabilities to enable searching across an expanded variety of datastores, including relational databases (such as DB2® and Oracle), Lotus Notes Domino™ databases, popular Web search engines, and text or html documents

  • Page Customizer redesigned to improve the user interface for the default home page and the portlet chooser dialog

    Use of authorization and/or access control has been added to the customizer pages.

  • Improved portlet installation through the packaging of portlet applications using the standard Java™ Archive tools into a Portlet ARchive (PAR) format file

    When packaged in such a form, configuration and deployment information is specified in an XML-based deployment descriptor, which allows separate delivery and installation of portlets.

  • A new portlet API to provide better standardization, scalability, and cleaner separation from the portal engine itself

    The API method signatures mirror the Java servlet API.

  • Lotus iNotes Calendar — provides a view of the user's Lotus iNotes calendar application

  • Lotus Notes Calendar — provides a view of the user's Lotus Notes calendar
  • Extended Search — allows intranet searches
  • Microsoft Exchange/2000 mail inbox view — provides a view of the user's Microsoft Exchange/2000 e-mail inbox
  • Microsoft Exchange/2000 mail calendar — provides a view of the user's Microsoft Exchange/2000 calendar
  • Microsoft Exchange/2000 contacts list — provides a view of the user's Microsoft Exchange/2000 contacts list
  • Lotus SameTime — provides a portlet which launches the Lotus SameTime Java client as a separate application
  • Lotus QuickPlace — provides a portlet which launches a Lotus QuickPlace in a separate QuickPlace browser
  • Sample Personalization Portlet — intended for reference by portlet developers, and demonstrates how to use WebSphere Personalization in a portlet to enable personalized user experiences
  • Portlet Catalog — provides the user with a list of available portlets, which allows selection and customization of the individual portlets

Portlet requirements:

  • Lotus iNotes portlets require Lotus iNotes, shipped as part of Lotus Domino Server 5.08
  • Lotus Notes portlets require Lotus Domino Server 5.00, or above
  • Microsoft Exchange portlets require Microsoft Exchange/2000, including the Web components
  • Lotus SameTime portlet requires Lotus SameTime
  • Lotus QuickPlace portlet requires Lotus QuickPlace

The following information applies to these software products that are included as part of WebSphere Portal Server:

  • WebSphere Application Server, IBM SecureWay Directory, WebSphere Personalization, DB2 UDB, and Lotus Extended Search have limited use license. These may be used only as part of and in conjunction with WebSphere Portal Server.

  • Two kinds of Personalization technologies are included with WebSphere Portal Server: rules and collaborative filtering. The rules technology was developed by IBM and is tightly integrated into the WebSphere programming model and scalability architecture. The recommendation engine supplied with WebSphere Portal Server utilizes LikeMinds Personalization Server 5.1.2 from Macromedia and can be exploited by WebSphere applications by using the published Java APIs.

    The recommendation engine can store up to 25,000 user profiles. You can expand the storage capacity of the recommendation engine by purchasing WebSphere Collaborative profiles V1.0, which authorizes you to expand the storage capacity of the recommendation engine by an additional 250,000 profiles.

  • Extended Search Service is available only on AIX and Windows NT. If you are using Solaris, you can make use of the extended search capability by connecting the Portal Server to the Extended Search server installed on either AIX or Windows NT.

Product Positioning

WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.2 replaces WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.1, which was made available earlier in 2001. Passport Advantage customers with Passport Subscription are eligible for the upgrade from V1.1 to V1.2. Each eligible customer should contact their IBM representative or authorized Business Partner for details of their specific entitlement.

Lotus K-station: Lotus K-station is a knowledge-management portal and incorporates enhanced collaborative services and fast out-of-the-box implementation. It is designed to meet customer requirements involving communities of interest, competitive intelligence, innovation management, and others. K-station is a knowledge-management portal application, in contrast to WebSphere Portal Server which provides the infrastructure for building and deploying a variety of portal solutions.

It delivers community and collaboration to the enterprise through the integration of three core synergies:

  • A customizable drag-and-drop graphical user interface
  • A place-based design architecture
  • Online awareness and chat capabilities

Lotus K-station is a primary contributor to Lotus greater knowledge-management strategy, which suggests that value is created when "People, Places & Things" are unified into a meaningful business context. Lotus K-station brings together People through its people awareness components. Things, or knowledge, is accessed through Places, which is leveraged as the central knowledge store.

Lotus Discovery Server: The Lotus Discovery Server integrates the critical elements of a strategic knowledge management infrastructure, including Knowledge Map (K-Map), expertise profiles, and powerful search tools. By automatically associating subject matter experts with information resources, the Discovery Server identifies relationships among documents, people, and topics. Users can quickly find the information and expert help they need to take fast, effective action. They are able to search or browse for information and locate experts via an easy to use, integrated Knowledge Map.

IBM Enterprise Information Portal (EIP): IBM EIP is IBM's premier solution for information integration. It extends the capability of WebSphere Portal Server by providing access and integration of a wide range of information sources, including relational databases, file systems, unstructured content stores such as IBM Content Manager, and others. The IBM EIP extended search technology ensures that returned search hit lists are organized within a context that the user can understand — no matter what the source of the information.

IBM EIP enables advanced information mining functions to be incorporated to automatically classify files and documents into categories, generate taxonomies, and automatically summarize information in the meta data store.

National Language Support: WebSphere Portal Server Version 1.2 has basic globalization support for all languages and is DBCD, BIDI, and Unicode enabled. In addition, the program is translated into the following languages:

  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese (Brazilian)
  • Spanish

All languages are included in the same code image, which is available worldwide. The language is selected during configuration.

A media pack and electronic download are available to Passport Advantage customers. This program, when downloaded from a Web site, contains the applicable IBM license agreement, and LI, if appropriate and will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. The license and LI will be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT for future reference.

Ordering Information

The ordering and pricing for WebSphere Portal Server is based on a single type of charge unit: per processor install. A processor is defined as any system or node executing all or any part of WebSphere Portal Server (the Program).

The program (program package or electronic download) is required for the first processor on the first server. One PoE is required for each additional processor beyond the first one.

There is a one-time charge (OTC) for each program and for each PoE. The total cost is the sum of the price of the Program OTC plus the price of the PoE multiplied by the number of PoEs.

For example, two 4-way symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems, whether stand-alone systems or nodes in a larger system, require one Program and seven additional Proofs of Entitlement. The total price will be the sum of one OTC for the Program and seven OTCs for the Proofs of Entitlement.
