DescriptionWCS, V5.1 is a comprehensive set of integrated software components that helps store personnel build, maintain, and manage stores to sell goods and services on the Web. V5.1 builds on the reputation for dependability, scalability, and performance by adding new capabilities beyond V4.1 in an industry-standard Java base. Marketing and sales teams can attract and retain customers and store developers can create and maintain their stores using an improved set of tools. The key components of WCS are:
Commerce Server provides all store functions, from browsing a product catalog, to placing an order, to maintaining the store. It includes these components:
WCS Accelerator — Browser-based user interface that allows all personnel to operate the online store. Includes four role-based areas:
Multicultural Enablement — Create a store that can be tailored to fit the needs of an international or culturally diverse customer base. Multicultural site characteristics include language, currency, data format, address, taxation, shipping, catalog content, page content, payment method, and prices. WebSphere Catalog Manager (WCM)
WCM, V1.2 is available and can be purchased separately to assist WCS
customers in the creation and management of their online catalog. The
WCM Loader is included in the base code of WCS to facilitate the loading
and maintenance of catalog information within the production runtime
environment. The WCM Loader function is the only component of the
overall WCM product that has been integrated into the base code.
Accessibility by People with DisabilitiesWCS, V5.1 is designed for accessibility; however, these features have not been completely tested. You should also have the latest PTFs for these products applied on your system, as indicated on the WCS Web site. You can obtain the latest PTFs either by applying the latest cumulative package, fixpak, or group PTF, or by ordering the PTFs directly from your iSeries service representative. To shop in a store created with WCS, shoppers can use any browser that supports SSL, Java and JavaScript, tables and frames, and cookies. WebSphere Commerce Studio requires Microsoft™ Windows NT Workstation, Version 4.0, or Windows 2000 Professional Edition. WebSphere Collaborative Profiles, Commerce Suite Edition has no additional requirements. Programming skills are necessary for customization work.
Performance Considerations:
Response time in an Internet environment depends on a variety of
network and telecommunication factors, such as line speeds, local network
constraints, and available processing capacity on the iSeries server.
Planning InformationCustomer Responsibilities: You should consider the installation, design, implementation, and maintenance of the WCS system. It is recommended strongly that IBM Global Services or Business Partners be used to assist in these activities, unless adequate in-house skills are available. To implement a complete WCS system, you or a Business Partner should have the following skills:

Security, Auditability, and ControlWCS uses the security and auditability features of the OS/400 operating system. The SSL protocol, an Internet open standard, is used to encrypt communications between the Web browser and the Web server. The Payment Manager of WCS supports the SET protocol. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
