Overview

Tivoli® Systems is proud to extend its revolutionary Value-Based Pricing model to include Tivoli NetView Performance Monitor for OS/390® (NPM for OS/390). Tivoli's Value-Based Pricing is an enterprise-wide technology management pricing model that actually helps you remain competitive in today's fast-paced environment.

What NPM Can Do for You

With NPM for OS/390, you can closely monitor and control your network infrastructure and its impact on day-to-day business. In addition to the ability to analyze network activities, NPM monitors, records, and interactively reports network communication, performance, and utilization. With its ability to provide network tuning information, support problem determination tools, and support for multiple protocols, NPM offers a network performance management tool for today's heterogeneous networks.

What's New in V2.6

Tightly integrated with Tivoli NetView for OS/390, NPM for OS/390 represents another huge advance in the network management capabilities offered by Tivoli's OS/390 product suite. V2.6 of NPM includes the following capabilities:

  • New Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) alerts provide enhanced support for Cisco routers and Advanced Peer-to-Peer Network (APPN®) sessions
  • Enhanced APPN interface statistics
  • New support for Cisco Internet Protocol
  • Cisco Internet Protocol (CIP) to logical unit (LU) mapping
  • Usability enhancements to the 3270 display panels
  • Recovery of the SNMP router collection on TCP/IP failure
  • Recovery of GUI Interface Connection on TCP/IP failure
  • Ability to launch the Java™ GUI from the NetView Management Console

Key Benefits

Release 6 of NPM adds to the network management benefits users already enjoy:

  • Network performance and utilization information can provide the needed data to support service-level agreement
  • Network elements that cause performance problems can be easily identified or eliminated
  • Network changes can be justified using definitive network data
  • NPM for OS/390 can, in conjunction with Tivoli NetView for OS/390, take automatic action based on performance information

Key Prerequisites

One of the following:

  • OS/390 V2R5 (5655-A29), or later
  • z/OS V1R1 (5694-A01)

Description

Tivoli NetView Performance Monitor for OS/390 (NPM for OS/390) represents another leap forward in the management capabilities offered by Tivoli's suite of OS/390 products. New capabilities have been added to NPM's principal management functions, confirming it as the management tool of choice for today's heterogeneous networks.

This announcement makes the previously announced NPM for OS/390 V2R6 available under the Tivoli Value-Based Pricing Model. NPM V2.6 strengthens and enhances the existing support already provided with the following additions.

SNMP Router Alerts

In addition to collecting SNMP Routers data, NPM can also monitor the collected data in relation to specified thresholds. When starting the collection, thresholds are specified. It's possible to change them with the alter collection command. When thresholds on routers are set to be activated, NPM generates alerts to NetView.

The following counters are monitored:

  • CPU usage percentage for IBM routers
  • CPU busy percentage for Cisco routers
  • APPN memory usage percentage for IBM routers
  • Global buffers usage percentage for IBM routers
  • Memory pool usage percentage for Cisco routers (individual Cisco memory pool usage)
  • Interface utilization percentage (individual interface throughput)
  • Percentage of packets received on the interface and discarded
  • Percentage of packets sent by the interface and discarded

Dynamic Data Display 3270 Panels

The Dynamic Data Display function allows users to display data on 3270 panels without waiting for a collection interval. The data is automatically refreshed and displayed on the screen when the user presses the enter key. The following predefined PF keys are provided:

  • NCPs
  • Routers
  • Lines (SDLC)
  • Applications
  • Terminals (SNA and TCP/IP)

This function is supported with new PF keys which are accessed in the same way on each panel. You may also access the Dynamic Data Display using the following paths:

  • The new command DYNamic from the output review panel
  • The fast path = 1.8 (Network Management) or = 2.4 (Response Time Management)

Recovery of SNMP Router Collection on TCP/IP Failure

An SNMP task is restarted when TCP/IP recovers after a failure and if any SNMP Router collection was active. The collection is then recovered.

Cisco IP to LU Mapping Support

NPM can retrieve IP to LU mapping information for TN3270/TN3270E clients connected into a S/390® via a Cisco TN3270(E) server.

Renaming of Labeled Items in 3270 Panels

Labels in the 3270 panels have been renamed to more meaningful and understandable labels.

Display APPN Interface Data

This functionality enables NPM V2.6 users to receive information on how much of the capacity for an interface was being used for APPN traffic. Most routers that support APPN have implemented the APPN_MIB. One of the tables in this MIB, Link Station, provides traffic counts and an index to the entry where the corresponding traffic flows. This can be used to determine what portion of the adapter was being specifically used for APPN traffic.

Recovery of GUI Interface Connection on TCP/IP Failure

When TCP/IP recovers after a failure, NPM 2.6 allows reconnection with a GUI Console without an NPM stoppage.

Cisco CIP Support

This enables the NPM V2.6 user to gather Cisco CIP management data.

Launching the NPM Java GUI from the NetView Management Console (NMC)

This support provides further integration of NPM with NetView for OS/390.

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Tivoli Systems Support

Although the first year of support is included in the product price, a NC order must be placed using program number 5698-SPT specifying feature number 9001 for asset registration and the appropriate First Year Standard Support — NC feature number. This 5698-SPT order establishes entitlement records worldwide. If a 5698-SPT order is not placed, the customer will not be entitled to support even during the first year of a license.

Prior to the end of the first 12 months support period, customers will be notified of their support renewal options. Unless the customer notifies IBM/Tivoli to discontinue or alter the level of support currently being received, support will automatically be renewed for annual billing at the same level as selected in the first year. Once the subsequent year support feature numbers are in place, renewals are automatic and billed annually unless support is cancelled by the customer.

Tivoli Systems offers a variety of support options in response to diverse customer requirements. The table below summarizes these offerings.

Support Upgrade

During the first year of a license, the customer may upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option by ordering the applicable OTC feature number from the table below. The OTC feature numbers may be specified on the initial order or later via an MES during the first year only. Ordering this OTC feature will not result in an extension of the NC support period.

In subsequent years, if a customer wants to upgrade to the Tivoli Standard-24 or Tivoli Select Support option, an MES order must be entered to discontinue the existing support option feature number and to add the feature number for the desired options After an MES order is entered, the support will be renewed and billed annually at that support level unless support is cancelled by the customer.
