Overview

eXtensible Markup Language (XML) provides an open, flexible, and powerful method of exchanging information:

  • Among diverse platforms and applications
  • Across geographic boundaries
  • Between businesses

Together with WebSphere™ Application Server for OS/390®, IBM Developer Kit for OS/390, and MQSeries® Family of offerings on OS/390, XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 provides the end-to-end solution infrastructure components to assist you in creating, integrating, and maintaining your business-to-business (B2B) solutions.

XML Toolkit V1R2 for z/OS and OS/390 has improved XML parsing capabilities. The parsers include software developed by the Apache Software Foundation

For additional information on XML Toolkit V1R1 for OS/390, refer to Software Announcement 200-144 , dated May 16, 2000.

Key Prerequisites

  • Software: z/OS V1R1; OS/390 V2R6, or later

Planned Availability Date

Description

The XML Toolkit V1R2 for z/OS and OS/390 improves the speed of deployment and helps reduce the complexities of information exchange within business integration. It provides the base infrastructure to integrate vertical/industry-specific data formats, structures, schemas, and metadata to ensure industry compliance of data representation and content. It also helps to provide the lowest total cost of ownership by capitalizing on the existing S/390 infrastructure.

XML can also facilitate information exchange after mergers and acquisitions. Most companies decide to merge or dissolve a merger based on two factors: culture and information exchange. Companies who embrace XML will be better suited to integrate their information. This will help determine if the acquisition can be integrated and streamlined into the acquirer's environment, producing a quicker and stronger synergy of business processes within both companies' value network.

XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 is compatible with IBM and non-IBM hardware and software platforms. Key uses include:

  • Categorizing and tagging data for exchange among disparate application environments
  • Providing extensibility to create new records with additional attributes, without disrupting any of the other records
  • Transforming "ad hoc" unstructured data to XML records; enabling you to search, cross-reference, and share your records

What's New in Version 1 Release 2

XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 provides support for the new IBM e(logo)server zSeries 900 (z900).

This release contains public and stable support of the DOM Level 1 and the SAX Level 1 specifications. It also contains new and experimental support of the DOM Level 2 and SAX Level 2 specifications. The XML Parser, Java Edition also contains experimental support for the partial April 7 W3C Schema specification.

Note: Experimental APIs are provided for use at your own risk and are not eligible for IBM Service. They are also subject to change.

Euro Currency

This program is EuroReady.

For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at:

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:

  • Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules
  • Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by:

  • Detailing euro related requirements
  • Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
  • Declaring when the implementation will be generally available

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.

Product Positioning

The XML Toolkit for z/OS and OS/390 fits within an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) family of IBM transformation and integration products. XML provides unrestricted information schema and data format structures to create reusable data in a common metalanguage, for all types of business-to-business applications.

Refer to Software Announcement 200-144 , dated May 16, 2000, for additional product positioning.
