Software Announcement 201-046 February 27, 2001 Tivoli NetView for OS/390 R4: Advanced TCP/IP Management for the EnterpriseAt a GlanceBuilding on the already rich functionality of Tivoli NetView for OS/390 Release 3, Release 4 provides enhancements in these areas and more:
OverviewTivoli® NetView for OS/390® Release 4 (R4) delivers new TCP/IP management services for OS/390 and z/OS. R4 extends its powerful automation functions to distributed UNIX® environments. These new management services expand NetView's reach in delivering scalable operations management resulting in improved availability for Enterprise environments. Advanced TCP/IP Management for the Enterprise In addition to new TCP/IP communication services (including TN3270 client, REXEC, and Remote Shell (RSH) server and client), R4 gives operators additional graphical views for monitoring TCP/IP connection status, diagnosing problems, and controlling distributed devices. R4 also provides TCP/IP trace management, real-time graphing of any standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIB-based performance data, and interactive control of devices. Special support is provided for real-time status information on the OS/390 and z/OS TCP/IP stack and TN3270 connections. New UNIX Support NetView's proven automation engine can now receive any standard message logged to a UNIX system log, including those from OS/390 and z/OS UNIX System Services (USS). UNIX messages can trigger a number of actions, including centralized commands or REXEC commands to start or stop services, provide operator notification, and/or log the message (UNIX message processing is in addition to NetView's trap processing capability made available in R3.). Management Services for Large Enterprises R4 provides new management services to address the needs of large enterprises. OS/390 or z/OS console commands can now be modified automatically prior to execution, or for unauthorized operators, suppressed entirely. NetView R4 can suppress the reporting of status changes for devices that are out of service due to a scheduled outage. The NetView Management Console (NMC) has been enhanced to further exploit Web technology for launching any browser-based tools, such as device-specific management applications. New graphical views are provided to display the health of internal tasks of a single or multiple NetViews. Drag-and-drop techniques may be used to build customized NMC views easily. Improved Productivity The effort required to configure NetView has been reduced with R4's simplified configuration definitions and expanded use of Sysplex environment system symbolics. Key PrerequisitesOne of the following:
For a detailed description of the hardware and software prerequisites, refer to the Technical Information section.

Euro CurrencyThis program is not impacted by euro currency. Product PositioningTivoli NetView for OS/390 V1R4 provides a comprehensive set of tools for maintaining complex, multivendor, multiplatform networks and systems from a single point of control. NetView provides management functions that work in cooperation with other products or can function alone. NetView as a stand-alone management application manages TCP/IP resources and SNA resources, and provides automation facilities to automate any network or system event. Examples of products that work with NetView for OS/390 are System Automation for OS/390 (5645-006) and Tivoli NetView (5698-NVW). NetView provides the automation services and graphical topology services for SA/390. SA/390's strength is OS/390 and z/OS system automation; Tivoli NetView for OS/390 provides integrated network automation. Also, Tivoli NetView for OS/390 can receive discovered IP resource topology from Tivoli NetView (5698-NVW) running on a UNIX or Windows NT platform to show an enterprise-wide view of the network, track resource status, and issue commands. Tivoli NetView for OS/390 can also forward collected management information to other management applications. For example, OS/390 messages and/or events can be sent to Tivoli Enterprise Console® (TEC) as events for end-to-end correlation, action, and display. Additionally, Tivoli NetView for OS/390 provides management services to Tivoli Business Systems Manager for its handling of OS/390 and z/OS subsystems such as CICS®, DB2®, and IMS. With its open APIs, NetView for OS/390 can be an integration point for both S/390® vendors and distributed vendors. NetView for OS/390 is a program for managing networks and systems through graphical display and automation. It reduces manual resource definition and complex automation setup through production-ready automation and extends centralized management into multiple non-SNA network environments. NetView for OS/390 can be used in an enterprise as a centralized manager, a mid-level manager, or an S/390 management endpoint. Note: Tivoli NetView for OS/390 R4 is the last release that will support the following functions. These functions will continue to be available and supported on other platforms where they are currently available.
