Description
Analysis and Design Facility
-
Methodology of choice
VisualAge Pacbase offers methodological openness and supports a variety
of methodologies including Unified Modeling Language (UML),
industry-specific frameworks such as the IBM Information Framework (IFW),
and can be customized to integrate company-specific methodologies.
-
Coverage of analysis and design needs
VisualAge Pacbase offers powerful information management capabilities to
help capitalize and enrich corporate AD know-how. It ensures the
flexibility that analysis and design teams want, and provides consistency
and validity of specifications, reusability, and quality of information
throughout the application development life cycle.
Pacdesign is the VisualAge Pacbase analysis and design component for
supporting the YSM, Merise, SSADM, and OMT methodologies. Pacdesign is
also available in Bank/Finance edition for supporting IFW models.
UML support is offered via the bridge with Rational Rose environment.
Rational Rose provides extensive support for requirements, analysis, and
design activity. The UML models defined in Rational Rose are converted
into VisualAge Pacbase design models. These design models populate the
VisualAge Pacbase central repository and can be directly reused during
the production phases.
e-business Build Facility
VisualAge Pacbase offers complete support for industrializing the
production of client/server and e-business applications. It provides:
-
Model-driven development
-
A single Java-based Developer Workbench to cover server and client
development, and middleware management
-
A central repository to energize all phases of development including
project management and quality assurance
VisualAge Pacbase includes VisualAge for Java technology and takes
advantage of up-to-date technologies such as Java applets, servlets, and
EJBs. In addition, VisualAge Pacbase remains open to third-party tools
and provides a COM module to address client development with a
COM-compliant tool.
-
Simplified development
VisualAge Pacbase offers a high level of expression that closely models
actual business processes so that developers can focus on solving
business issues rather than technical issues.
VisualAge Pacbase provides an information model dedicated to e-business
needs and integrated in the development cycle. This e-business
information model gives a clear dispatching and structuring of the data
necessary for development and formalizes the description of application
components. It allows development teams to focus on functional
characteristics and ensures quality applications produced automatically
by the VisualAge Pacbase generators.
VisualAge Pacbase implements a visual programming approach in order to
improve productivity and ease learning. The Developer Workbench takes
advantage of the SmartGuides technology to enable users to interact with
their tool through a guided and contextual dialogue.
-
Integration of existing assets
VisualAge Pacbase ensures a smooth transition to e-business so that
organizations continue to get a good return on investments in existing
systems while gradually introducing new technologies to development
teams.
Organizations have the freedom to leverage applications components and
skills. Existing COBOL programs can be integrated with the new
architectures for producing new server-based e-business systems. In
addition, development teams can use the more technical developers for
building JavaBeans and other developers for assembling these components.
-
Consistent development
VisualAge Pacbase provides the consistency required to achieve
high-quality applications and to improve development productivity.
VisualAge Pacbase generates a proxy object as a JavaBean or EJB to
provide developers the view of the server they need. This proxy object
facilitates client construction by enabling the direct access and use of
data, services, and events available on the server. It improves
development reliability by enabling automatic reuse of information
defined in the central repository. It simplifies development by hiding
complex mechanisms associated with client and server exchanges.
All components are managed around the central VisualAge Pacbase
repository and benefit from key advantages such as impact analysis
capabilities. Each time you reuse an object throughout the life cycle of
applications, including during maintenance, you are ensured of its
quality. This efficient reuse of consistent objects is a vital element
of application development industrialization.
-
Ability to generate for multiple IBM and non-IBM platforms
VisualAge Pacbase improves portability of applications due to
independence from any specific environment. COBOL backend servers and
the code necessary to use standard middleware can be generated for the

Traditional Build Facility
-
Complete support for traditional application development needs
VisualAge Pacbase provides genuine support for development and automates
the production of complete applications. The resulting applications can
evolve rapidly without putting previous investments at risk.
The information model guides development and ensures automatic reuse of
components. Application structure is independent of technological
constraints, which guarantees the adaptability of applications.
VisualAge Pacbase handles the production process for batch transaction
processing and reporting as well as online applications. VisualAge
Pacbase generates automatically 100% of the source code, database
descriptions, and the necessary documentation (online and paper).
The central VisualAge Pacbase repository stores, manages, and controls
information used throughout application development and ensures its
consistency and shareability.

Management Facility
With the VisualAge Pacbase central repository, organizations capitalize
on corporate AD know-how, ensure data administration, and master
management and maintenance of development projects.
VisualAge Pacbase provides a central repository, which offers an
elaborate storage structure, including the functions necessary for
managing and controlling the information throughout the life-cycle of
applications.
Its organization facilitates the sharing and reuse of information and
allows several projects to be managed in parallel. Powerful features
allow the management of versions and cross-references of information.
This well-managed and integrated development environment facilitates
increased programmer productivity and maximizes quality in the
development, maintenance, and delivery of distributed applications.
The VisualAge Pacbase repository can take advantage of third-party
environments for complementary configuration management functions such as
source code management and software distribution, simplifying the
delivery process.
One of the main benefits of a repository-based life-cycle tool becomes
evident at maintenance time. Existing customers of the VisualAge Pacbase
repository report productivity gains of 70-80% when maintaining
applications.
