Software Announcement 200-444 December 12, 2000 IBM WebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390 Supports Java 2 TechnologyAt a GlanceThe WebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390 run time includes:
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001). OverviewWebSphere Application Server extends the S/390® role as a premier server for enterprise e-business. It exploits the S/390 hallmark qualities of service such as scalability, performance, security, and availability. Through the incorporation of open industry standards (such as HTML, HTTP, IIOP, Java, servlets, Java server pages (JSP)), new e-business applications and transactions can now be scaled up for global deployment on the server of choice regardless of the development platform. New applications can be integrated with the extensive inventory of existing S/390 applications. The result is the rapid creation of production-ready, e-business applications! Enhancements V3.5
Key PrerequisitesWebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390® will run on any hardware that supports the OS/390 operating system V2 R8, and later. However, due to changes introduced in Java Developer's Kit (JDK) 1.3.0, there are significant performance advantages for those applications doing floating point arithmetic if the machine has binary floating point hardware, such as S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server Generation 5, and higher, systems. For similar reasons, such applications currently running on a WebSphere Application Server V3.02 Standard Edition for OS/390 server will face performance degradation if moved to a V3.5 server running on a machine without binary floating point hardware. A hardware upgrade is highly recommended before moving these applications to V3.5. DescriptionWebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390 effectively provides a compatible superset of function originally delivered by the WebSphere Application Server V3.02 for OS/390, Standard Edition feature. This superset of function is equivalent to the Java servlets and JSP extensions provided to WebSphere Application Server V3.5 for distributed systems. Refer to Software Announcement 200-155 , dated May 30, 2000. The following functional enhancements are provided by WebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390:
Except for minor changes, configuration and operational characteristics remain essentially the same as for WebSphere Application Server V3.02 for OS/390, Standard Edition. WebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390 may be installed and configured to an OS/390 system which is also executing previous versions of the Application Server. That is, a system that has an existing WebSphere configuration (for example, a Web Server with a V3.02 plug-in configured) should continue to operate independently of a V3.5 application server being configured. The only restriction is that the new product version can not be configured to run in the same physical address space as a previous version of the Application Server program. This address space separation will allow for two independent production environments in the same physical system within a single instance of the operating system: one for Java1 applications and another for Java2 applications. Java Developers Kit: JDK 1.3.0 is shipped with each WebSphere Application Server V3.5 Standard Edition for OS/390 order. This JDK provides the base support for applications at the Java 2 API level. Customers may choose to use this supplied level of the JDK or another that they may have already installed at a higher service level.
