  • GNU Standard C++ Library (libstdc++) level 2.9.0

Prerequisites are Public Domain Korn Shell (pdksh) and RedHat Package Monitor (RPM).

Developer Kit for Linux, Version 1.2.2

Developer Kit for Linux, Version 1.2.2 (Developer Kit) is the latest stable version of the Java virtual machine base required within the server run-time environment. WebSphere now supports Developer Kit Version 1.2.2 as well as providing it within the product package across all supported operating platforms. It increases performance and expands the capabilities for improved dynamic and static Web content.

Usability

WebSphere Application Server V3.5, Advanced Edition for Linux offers improved installation, administration, and product documentation. As a result, it now has a comprehensive and accurate Web-based documentation center that users can take advantage of right from the start. The installation and administration procedures are easier to use while still maintaining a rich and flexible set of selectable configurations and prerequisites for tailored, open, and complete solutions.

Product Integration

An important aspect of WebSphere (core to the foundation services of the IBM e-business platform) is its ease of integration with other leading products for a robust set of application solution offerings. Integration with VisualAge for Java Enterprise Edition is enhanced with support for the Developer Kit Version 1.2.2 base across platforms when generating e-business applications such as:

  • Servlets
  • Java Server Pages components
  • JavaBeans components
  • Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) components

Transaction Management

The WebSphere EJB server monitors and controls containers used within the server. Persistent storage for transactional EJB components now includes support for DB2® (distributed as part of WebSphere) and Oracle databases.

HTTP Server

A function-rich IBM HTTP server (based on technology from the Apache HTTP server) is included with additional security and performance enhancements new for V3.5:

  • Fast Common Gateway Interface (CGI), providing a considerable boost in CGI performance.
  • Proxy support, enabling "forwarding" of HTTP requests from one server (the proxy) to another. Proxy capability is required in products such as IBM Small Business suites.
  • Remote configuration updates.
  • Server start/stop.
  • Web-distributed authority versioning and remote access to files on the server via third-party software.

WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition

WebSphere Application Server, V3.5 Advanced Edition for Linux carries over the functions of the previous version including:

  • Rich e-business application deployment environment with a comprehensive set of robust application services for transaction management, security, clustering, performance, availability, connectivity, and scalability
  • Leading-edge implementations of the most up-to-date Java-based technologies and APIs
  • Comprehensive connectivity support for interacting with relational databases, object databases, transaction processing systems, MQ-enabled applications, and hierarchical databases
  • Migration path to a more scalable and transactional environment from WebSphere Standard Edition with a superset of capabilities for a comprehensive Java-based Web application platform
  • Focus on medium- to high-level transactional environments used in conjunction with dynamic Web content generation and Web-initiated transactions
  • Performance and scaling attributes that support bean-managed and container-managed persistence for entity beans and session beans with transaction management and monitoring
  • Container management and persistent storage within a transactional environment for servlets and EJB components
  • Rich eXtensible Markup Language (XML) parsing and configuration environment
  • Admin client debugger component
